The next afternoon, at Jones Group, Garrett finished his work and prepared to visit Deanna again.
Just then, his assistant knocked and entered the office respectfully. "Mr. Jones, Mr. Mercer is here to see you."
"Mr. Mercer?"
Garrett looked surprised and confirmed again, "Are you talking about Mr. Mercer from Mercer Group, or..."
Although he didn't finish his sentence, the assistant understood and replied, "Yes, it's Mr. Mercer from Mercer Group."
Upon hearing this, Garrett's face showed astonishment.
"Why would he come here?"
Though puzzled, he was more excited than anything else.
No matter the reason for Lance's visit, as long as he was willing to come to the company, it was a good thing for both the company and the Jones family.
Thinking of this, Garrett rubbed his hands together in excitement but noticed his assistant still standing there without any sense. He glared, "What are you standing there for? Go and invite Mr. Mercer up."
The assistant nodded and was about to leave.
But Garrett stopped him, "Wait, I'll go down to greet him personally."
He quickly left the office, heading downstairs.
Soon, Garrett took the elevator down.
As soon as he stepped out, he saw Lance standing at the reception with an extraordinary presence. With a flattering smile, he walked over, "Mr. Mercer, long time no see. It's an honor for our Jones Group to have you here."
Lance looked at him with a trace of disgust in his eyes.
"I'm here to discuss a project with you. Are you sure you want to talk here?"
"Oh, look at my memory. I was so focused on talking to you that I forgot to invite you upstairs."
Garrett made a gesture to invite Lance to follow him.
A few minutes later, they were seated on the office sofa.
Garrett personally poured Lance a cup of tea and asked, "Mr. Mercer, what project did you mention earlier?"
Instead of answering, Lance asked, "I heard you visited Deanna the day before yesterday."
Upon hearing this, Garrett's expression froze, and he looked over nervously.
Unfortunately, he couldn't read anything from Lance's face and said awkwardly, "I heard you two are getting engaged. As her father, I wanted to do something. But Deanna and I have had deep conflicts in the past; she refused to see me." His tone turned melancholic at the end.
Meanwhile, he kept observing Lance's expression but found nothing.
Lance noticed Garrett's sneaky glances and felt contempt. He thought it was disgraceful for a company chairman to behave so despicably.
Running out of patience, Lance got straight to the point, "You know very well the situation between you and Deanna. I'm here for one reason only. I heard you mentioned giving Deanna the shares left by my mother-in-law as her dowry. Is that true?"
Feeling pressured by Lance's imposing demeanor, Garrett began to sweat.
"Yes, that's true."
Under Lance's gaze, Garrett couldn't deny his previous words and continued reluctantly, feeling anxious and conflicted.
He wondered whether to give the shares if Lance asked for them.
Before he could think of a solution, Lance's cold voice interrupted him.
"If it's true, then bring the transfer documents. I'll accept them on Deanna's behalf."
Lance's tone left no room for refusal as he stared at Garrett.
Feeling immense pressure as if a mountain weighed on him, Garrett didn't dare resist.
But he was unwilling to give up the shares so easily since they were crucial for saving the company.
Summoning his courage under Lance's pressure, he gritted his teeth and said, "Mr. Mercer, it's not that I don't want to transfer the shares now. My company is facing some issues. Transferring the shares now would worsen the situation. Of course, if Mr. Mercer insists on taking them, it's not impossible. After all, we haven't discussed the betrothal gifts for our families' union."
"Heh-" Lance couldn't help but laugh coldly.
He looked at Garrett mockingly and raised an eyebrow, "I remember five years ago you kicked Deanna out of the Jones family. Even if there's a betrothal gift to discuss, it shouldn't be up to you."
Upon hearing this, Garrett's face stiffened.
He then said awkwardly, "That was a misunderstanding. I didn't know Deanna was with you back then. Otherwise, I would never have kicked her out. No matter what happened, I'm still Deanna's father. There's no long-standing grudge between father and daughter."
