Entering through the main gate, they arrived at the outer courtyard, typically used for receiving guests.
Deanna followed Gunner into the living room and noticed that although the courtyard had a vintage feel, the furniture inside was modern.
A magnificent glass chandelier illuminated the entire living room.
The brown leather and solid wood sofa, paired with the antique-style courtyard, created an indescribable sense of old-world charm.
At this moment, an elderly man in a gray-brown robe, leaning on a cane, shakily approached and grabbed Gunner's arm, exclaiming excitedly, "Master Gunner, you're finally back."
"Uncle John, long time no see. How have you been all these years?"
Gunner's previously cold demeanor softened into a faint smile as he reached out to support the elderly man.
Before he could touch him, the old man waved him off, "Master Gunner, I can't let you support me."
Hearing this, a trace of helplessness appeared in Gunner's eyes.
The old man then curiously looked towards Deanna and the others, "This must be Miss Deanna. Nice to meet you."
As he spoke, the old man lifted his robe and knelt down to perform an ancient ritual.
Deanna was stunned and instinctively stepped aside.
"Please get up, sir..."
She hurriedly moved forward to help him up, casting a pleading glance at her master for assistance.
Gunner did not ignore his disciple's plea and stepped forward to help as well. "John, please get up. I went through great lengths to bring her here. If you scare her away, you'll be responsible for bringing her back."
At these words, the old man immediately stopped insisting on the ritual and stood up with Deanna and Gunner's help.
As he rose, he apologized to Deanna, "I hope you can forgive me, Miss Deanna. I know ancient rituals are no longer practiced in society today. I was just overwhelmed with emotion because our Master Gunner finally has a successor. The old master can rest in peace."
Tears welled up in his eyes as he finished speaking.
Deanna was deeply moved by his heartfelt words of affection for her master.
"Don't worry, sir. I won't leave. My master was just teasing you. Please don't get too emotional."
She gently comforted the elderly man, worried that his excitement might affect his health.
Fortunately, the old man was reasonable and calmed down within seconds.
At this point, Gunner began formally introducing them.
"John, this is Deanna, my personal disciple and future heir of the Martinez family. Although she started learning medicine from me halfway through, she has shown remarkable wisdom and perseverance."
"Master Gunner, you have a high opinion of Miss Deanna. It means she must be excellent."
John looked at Deanna with affection and satisfaction.
Deanna felt a bit uncomfortable under his scrutinizing gaze, even though it was not malicious.
Thankfully, her master's words rescued her. "Deanna, this is John... you can call him John."
"John," Deanna obediently addressed him.
John knew he couldn't stop Master Gunner from using this term, so he accepted it with a sigh.
Gunner also introduced the two little ones and Old Ashley.
After some pleasantries, John's mood became even more elated.
Not only did his Master Gunner have a successor, but also grandchildren. It was wonderful.
Later in the evening, after everyone settled in, they moved to the dining room for dinner.
As they took their seats, Deanna noticed that only their family and her master were present in the large dining room. The others were nowhere to be seen. She raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
During the meal, there was no rule against talking.
Gunner took a small sip of wine and then said softly, "After dinner, I have some matters to attend to. If you're tired, rest early. If you want to explore the courtyard, have one of the servants show you around. Treat this place as your home."
"Understood, Master. You go ahead with your work; don't worry about us."
Deanna nodded with a smile.
Gunner glanced at her and raised an eyebrow. "I was referring to Gregory and Chloe and your grandmother. As for you, I have other plans."
Deanna was momentarily speechless.
The two little ones watched from the side, covering their mouths to stifle their laughter.
Half an hour later, they finished dinner.
Gunner left early due to his commitments.
At this moment, John appeared with his cane.
He smiled warmly at the two little ones and the elderly lady, asking, "Would Master Gregory and Miss Chloe like to visit the garden? There are many flowers planted there and quite a few koi fish in the pond. Old Ashley might enjoy it."
"That sounds fun! I want to go."
Chloe exclaimed excitedly.
Old Ashley saw this and naturally did not object.
Soon, the three of them were led to the garden by a servant.
Only Deanna remained in the dining room.
She looked at John with his harmless smile but did not underestimate him in the least. "John, does my master have something he wants you to convey to me?"
"You're very perceptive, Miss Deanna. Please follow me."
John made a gesture inviting Deanna to follow him.
