The woman was also scrutinizing Deanna, her eyes somewhat evasive. But then she thought, her child did nothing wrong, so why should she feel guilty?
"You must be the future missus of the Mercer family. The teacher should have told you about the incident. How do you plan to resolve this? Look at what your son did to my son's face! As a mother, I can hardly bear it. And your daughter-I never expected the Mercer family to have such unruly children. She bit my son's thigh so hard that the school doctor said if she had bitten any harder, the flesh would have needed to be cut out!"
The woman took the initiative to demand an explanation from Deanna.
Although Deanna was displeased with her tone, she suppressed her annoyance and calmly looked at her. "As a parent, I understand your feelings about your child being hurt. The teacher has told me the general situation, but I still want to ask my children why they fought. I know my kids well; they wouldn't start a fight for no reason."
Hearing this, Chloe, who had been standing in the corner reflecting on her actions, couldn't hold back any longer. She turned her head and complained to Deanna with a wronged expression.
"Mommy, it wasn't Gregory and me who started it. Devin provoked us first. He called you the daughter of a murderer and said you were a bad person, not a good one. He also said Gregory and I were no good either."
"My son didn't say anything wrong. Isn't your father a murderer? Emily exposed it online."
The woman retorted as if her son had done nothing wrong.
Deanna was somewhat taken aback, not expecting it to be about this matter. She was momentarily speechless.
"Although it's wrong for our children to hit others, your child provoked ours first. Since both sides are at fault, how about this: they apologize to each other, and we'll cover your child's medical expenses. What do you think?"
She tried to negotiate politely with the woman.
The woman, however, was dissatisfied. "My son was beaten like this by your two kids, and you think an apology and some medical expenses are enough? Do you big families look down on us small families so much? Are you trying to dismiss us like beggars?"
"Then what do you want? Just tell me. As long as it's reasonable, I'll try to meet your demands."
Deanna saw the greed on the woman's face and knew she wanted to take advantage of the situation.
Even if the woman's child caused a trouble first, Gregory and Chloe hitting him was an undeniable fact.
The woman's eyes gleamed with cunning as she spoke. "Money isn't an issue for us, even though we can't compare to the Mercer family. How about this: I've heard the Mercer family is competing for that piece of land in Eastport later this year. Why don't you give that land to us?"
She meant for the Mercer family to go through all the trouble of acquiring the land and then give it to her family for free.
Deanna laughed in exasperation.
"Madam, perhaps I wasn't clear earlier. I meant any reasonable request within my capability."
She emphasized her words to remind the woman.
However, the woman pretended not to understand and raised an eyebrow. "What? My request isn't within your capability?"
Indeed, it wasn't.
Deanna was about to respond when she was interrupted.
"Aren't you the future missus of the Mercer family? How can you not handle such a small matter? Anyway, that's my demand. If you don't agree, I'll call the police and expose you."
The woman spoke almost shamelessly.
Deanna frowned deeply, unsure of what to do for a moment.
The two kids realized the situation was getting serious and glared angrily at the woman but didn't dare speak again.
They were afraid of saying something wrong and causing more trouble for their mommy.
The teacher standing nearby was also stunned.
She hadn't expected this seemingly wealthy lady to resort to extortion.
"Mrs. Cain, it's normal for kids to get hurt while playing..."
"Shut up! Did I ask for your opinion? But you've reminded me of something. My son got hurt at your school; you must give me an explanation. Otherwise, I'll make sure all the other parents know how biased your school is!"
The woman threatened before the teacher could finish speaking.
Hearing this, Deanna regained her composure and pondered. "I can't make decisions for the Mercer family. How about this: I own several companies. See if there's any project we can collaborate on. If there is, our companies can work together."
She wasn't lying; she indeed couldn't make decisions for the Mercer family.
Of course, she didn't want this woman taking advantage of the Mercer family either.
To put it bluntly, this whole mess started because Devin couldn't keep his mouth shut. If he hadn't said those things to provoke Gregory and Chloe, he wouldn't have been beaten up.
