Chapter 72 – A day to remember

GABRIEL.

As I ventured through the beautiful mountain range of Hollow Peak, I experienced a sensation of great joy and serenity. The cool breeze swept through my hair, and the chirping of birds filled the air, making me feel like I was in a different world altogether. But what made this experience even more special was that I was not alone. By my side was my six-year-old daughter Maddie, and for the next few days, she was all mine.

I had planned this trip for a long time, and I knew Maddie would be over the moon to spend time in such a beautiful place. But what she didn’t know was that I had a surprise in store for her, one that would make this trip even more unforgettable.

As we approached our destination, I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. I knew that Kira's family was also in Hollow Peak and I knew there was a probability of me bumping into them. But that didn’t matter. I had already decided, and nothing was going to change my plans.

Finally, we arrived at our destination, a beautiful little house perched on the side of the mountain. As Maddie gazed in awe at the stunning scenery around us, I couldn’t help but smile. This was it. This was the moment.

“Maddie,” I said, taking her hand in mine. “I have a surprise for you.”

Her eyes widened with excitement, and she looked up at me expectantly. “This house,” I said, gesturing to the little cottage. “It’s ours.”

Maddie’s face lit up, and she squealed with delight.

“Our house?” she asked, unable to contain her excitement.

“Our house,” I confirmed, grinning from ear to ear.

Maddie hugged me tightly, and I could feel the warmth of her small body pressed against mine. This was what happiness felt like, I thought. Being here with my daughter, surrounded by nature, and knowing that we had a little secret that was just ours to keep.

As we settled into our new home, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. This was going to be a few days of pure joy and relaxation, and I couldn’t wait to spend it with my little girl. Sure, Kira’s family was nearby, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was the precious time I was going to spend with Maddie, and the memories we were going to create together.

Still, I knew the time would come for Maddie to see her mother’s family and especially for me to be able to talk to them.

The next three days were a dream.

Oh, Maddie, what a joy it was to spend time with her today. We played many games, from hide-and-seek to tea parties. The way she giggled as she tried to find me hiding behind the couch, her eyes lighting up with each discovery, was simply magical.

But the highlight of our day was when we played dress-up, with Maddie trying on many costumes, from a princess to a superhero. She was beaming with excitement as she twirled around in her Cinderella dress, the tulle skirt flowing behind her.

As we played, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of happiness and contentment. Maddie’s laughter was infectious, and I grinned from ear to ear as we continued our adventures.

But then, something unexpected happened. In the middle of our game, Maddie looked up at me with those big, bright eyes and said, “Daddy, can we play again?”

I was stunned for a moment, taken aback by the sudden use of the word. But as I looked into her face, I could see the pure joy and innocence in her expression. She wasn’t trying to be manipulative or needy - she was simply expressing her happiness and excitement to be playing with me.

And in that moment, my heart swelled with love and gratitude. I was grateful for the time I had with Maddie, grateful for the joy she brought into my life, and grateful for the opportunity to be her “daddy.”

So we continued our game, with Maddie giggling and twirling and me trying to keep up with her endless energy. And as the afternoon wore on and the sun almost set, I realized that this was one of the happiest moments of my life.

The next morning, we woke up early. It was time to make some major decisions for both Maddie and me.

“Honey, today we’re going to make an important visit,” I told her with all the enthusiasm I could muster.

“Important? To whom? Who are we visiting, Daddy?” Maddie asked happily.

“Your grandparents, my dear! Your grandparents...”

Maddie’s face lit up like a summer morning.

“Hooray! We’re going to see Grandma and Grandpa!” she shouted happily surrounding the kitchen table.

As we walked up to Kira’s house, I couldn’t help but feel nervous. Today was the day that I was going to talk to Kira’s parents, and it was long overdue. Mrs. Reed opened the door and her expression changed from confusion to shock when she saw me holding little Maddie’s hand.

“Hello, Mrs. Reed,” I mumbled. “I’m sorry to just show up unannounced like this, but I wanted to talk to you and your husband about something important.”

Mrs. Reed’s expression softened as she looked down at Maddie.

“Of course, come on in. Everyone’s going to be so happy to see Maddie.”

I followed Mrs. Reed inside and she led me to the living room, where Mr. Reed was sitting on the couch reading a newspaper. He looked up as I entered the room and gave me a curt nod.

“What brings you here, young man?” he asked.

I took a deep breath and tried to steady my nerves.

“Hello Mr Reed! It is nice to see you again!” I said, holding Maddie’s hand a little tighter.

“You brought Maddie with you. Great. Maddie, come to your grandfather.”

Maddie pulled away from my hand, looked at me once, and walked over to Kira’s father. He kissed her forehead gently. “How big you’ve grown Maddie! What’s it like being with Daddy?” asked Mr. Reed, and I felt the blood freeze in my veins.

“It’s okay Grandpa, but sometimes I miss Mommy,” Maddie said and put her head down.

“You miss Mommy, do you?” repeated Mr. Reed and fixed his gaze on my eyes. I could easily tell what he was thinking. “Honey, go play with Uncle Joe for a while. The grown-ups have something to talk about,” Mr. Reed said and as soon as he handed Maddie over to Kira’s brother, he got up from the couch. “Now tell us about all this charade with the custody over this little girl you’ve been put up” Mr. Reed said and his tone was already harsh.

“Look, I know that things have been difficult between Kira and I ever since the custody battle, but I wanted to tell you both that I still love Kira and I’m trying to make things right.”

Mrs. Reed looked at me skeptically.

“And how exactly are you trying to make things right?” she asked.

“I’ve bought a house here in town, and I plan on settling my family here with Kira and Maddie,” I replied. “I know I hurt Kira and you all, her family, and I can’t change the past. But I want to do everything in my power to make it up to her and to you.”

There was a long moment of silence as Kira’s parents looked at each other, seeming to communicate without words. Finally, Mrs. Reed spoke up.

“I’ll admit, we haven’t been the most welcoming to you since the custody battle,” she said. “But Maddie is our granddaughter, and we want what’s best for her. If Kira is happy with you and you’re willing to make things work, then we’ll support you.”

I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling the weight of the world lift off my shoulders.

“Thank you, Mrs. Reed. I promise you won’t regret giving me another chance.”

We spent the next hour or so talking about our plans for the future, how we could work together to make sure that Maddie was happy and well-cared for. Kira’s parents even asked if I wanted to stay for dinner, and we all sat around the table together, laughing and talking like old friends.

It was only when Maddie’s attention span had run its course and she got antsy that I realized how much time had passed. Kira’s brother had taken her to play outside, away from our conversation, but now it was time to go.

“Thank you again for everything,” I said, standing up to leave. “I really appreciate your willingness to forgive me and give me another chance.”

Kira’s father stood up as well, extending his hand to shake mine.

“You’re a good man,” he said. “And we can see how much you love our daughter and granddaughter. That’s all that really matters.”

As I walked out of Kira’s house, holding Maddie’s hand once again, I felt a sense of hope and optimism that I hadn’t felt in a long time. Maybe things really could work out between us, if we were all willing to try.

I was feeling ecstatic until a notification from an email brought me back to reality and revealed I had been summoned to court.
