Chapter 62 – It has begun

KIRA.

“What the hell is this, Alana?” I asked, reading an envelope that clearly said someone summoned me to Court. I didn’t even have to open it to figure out what was inside.

Alana was standing in front of me at the kitchen table sipping coffee. I skipped work, and she did, too. She didn’t want to leave me alone. “Alana, I don’t know what to do. I just received this envelope from the court and it’s a citation in my name,” I said in a panic.

“What? What does it say?” she asked.

“Gabriel is petitioning me for full custody of Maddie. The man is crazy.”

“Oh my God! Ok, we knew this would happen. Are you ok with this?”

“No, I’m not okay. I’m freaking out. There is nothing I can do. I feel like I’m going to lose Maddie.” I said, and tears started welling up in my eyes.

“Kira, you need to stay calm. The best thing to do right now is to contact Mark. You need to tell him everything from the day you conceived Maddie until you kicked Gabriel out of your life. He will know what to do and how to help you.” Alana advised.

“I know, but what if the court decides in Gabriel’s favor?” I asked in fear.

“That’s why you need Mark for Kira. He will help you fight for your rights as a mother. Don’t worry, we’ll get through this together.”

“Thank you, Alana. I don’t know what I would do without you.” I said and grabbed her hands. This was so reassuring.

“We’ll get through this. Just take a deep breath and call Mark as soon as possible.”

I paced back and forth in my living room, the weight of the situation heavy on my shoulders. Gabriel had sued me for full custody of my daughter, claiming that I was an unfit mother. I couldn’t believe it. I had devoted my entire life to raising our little girl, and now he was trying to take her away from me.

I knew I had to fight back, but I didn’t know where to start. I reached for my phone and dialed his number. He picked up on the third ring. I nodded to Alana, and she smiled slightly.

“Hey, what’s up?” he asked.

“Mark, it’s me,” I said, my voice shaking with emotion.

“Are you okay?” he asked, concern clear in his voice.

“No, I’m not okay,” I said. “Gabriel has sued me for full custody of our daughter. He’s claiming that I’m an unfit mother.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

“I’m so sorry,” he said finally. “That’s awful. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now.”

“I need your help,” I said, my voice breaking. “It's impossible for me to figure out what to do. I don’t have anyone else to turn to.”

“Of course, I’ll help you,” he said without hesitation. “We’ll fight this together.”

I breathed a sigh of relief.

“Thank you, Mark. I knew I could count on you.”

“Always, Kira. I will send you my office location and I want to see you today,” he said.

As we hung up, I felt a sense of peace washed over me. With Mark by my side, I knew I could face anything. I didn’t care what Gabriel would think. If he could sue me to take my daughter away, then I, too, would use any means necessary to fight back. And with Mark as my lawyer, I knew we could win this battle.

I turned to face Alana.

“So? Is he going to help?” she asked eagerly.

“Of course he is. This is his address,” I said, showing Alana what Mark sent me on my phone.

“So, what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

Walking to Mark’s office I had the feeling that my world was crumbling down little by little. I could hardly believe I was taking these steps. I never thought I’d have to fight to keep my daughter from being taken away. And what hurt the most, fighting the man I still loved.

I never thought it would come to this. The custody battle over Maddie, my precious daughter, had become a brutal and emotionally draining experience. I knew I had to be strong for her, but it was difficult when every time I saw Gabriel Bates reminded me of our painful past.

I tried to move on from our relationship, but I couldn’t help but wonder if somewhere deep down in Gabriel’s soul, he was still feeling the love he claimed to once have for me. Was it all just a lie? Was it all just a game to him? These questions constantly plagued my mind.

I knew I had to put these thoughts aside and focus on Maddie. She was the reason I ended up here, and I would do anything to protect her. But it was hard not to feel like I was constantly walking on eggshells around Gabriel. He was so unpredictable, and I never knew what he was going to do next.

I just had to keep reminding myself that I was doing the right thing. Maddie deserved a stable and loving home, and I knew I could provide that for her. No matter how hard the road ahead might be, I would always be there for her. And I would never give up on her, no matter what challenges might come our way.

“Come on, get in there!” Alana urged me as soon as we arrived in front of Mark’s office.

Mark was so happy to see me. I would be too in other circumstances. He embraced me and I really needed his friendly hug.

“Welcome, Kira,” he said, motioning for me to have a seat. He also called his secretary for coffee.

“It is nice to see you too, Mark,” I said, despite the pain in my heart.

“Hey, change that face! You will get through this, I promise! Now tell me the entire story! We need to build a strong case against Gabriel Bates”

I couldn’t shake off what Mark said. It seemed like a thinly veiled threat to build a strong case against Gabriel in the custody battle for Maddie. I know he was my lawyer, and he was just doing his job, but it was all so overwhelming. Did I have the strength to go through this? To fight for my daughter? To face Gabriel in court and prove that I was the better parent?

Mark promised me I wouldn’t lose Maddie, but what if I did? What would my life be like without her? How would I wake up every morning and not see her bright smile and hear her laughter? The thought of losing her made my heart ache, but I had to stay strong for her. I had to fight for her.

But could I really win this? Gabriel was a wealthy man with connections and resources that I could only dream of having. How could I possibly compete with that? But then again, money and power don’t make a good parent. Since she was born, I have been her primary caregiver. It was my duty to be there for her 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I knew her likes and dislikes, her fears and dreams, her strengths and weaknesses. I loved her with all my heart, and I knew that might count for something.

I had to believe in myself and in the system. Justice would prevail, right? But what if it didn’t? What if I lost? I couldn’t even imagine what my life would be like without Maddie. It was a terrifying thought. But I had to keep going. I had to keep fighting. For Maddie. For us.

I couldn’t believe this was happening. How could Gabriel even consider taking Maddie away from me? She was my daughter. I had been there for her every step of the way. I loved her more than anything in this world.

But the thought of losing custody... unbearable. Maddie was my life, my everything. If I lost her, I didn’t know how I would go on. And if Gabriel got his way, he would never let me see her again. Maddie would suffer, and I just couldn’t bear that.

Mark and I would have to do everything in our power to keep that from happening. We would fight tooth and nail for Maddie, no matter what it took. I would do whatever it took to prove that I was the best parent for Maddie.

I never thought it would come to this, but I wouldn’t give up without a fight. Maddie meant too much to me, and I would do anything to protect her. Even if I had to confront Gabriel, I wouldn’t back down. Maddie deserved the best life possible, and I would make sure she got it even if it meant stepping on Gabriel’s heart.
