Chapter 14 The Final Failsafe
There are things the heart clings to that are more dangerous than any storm, like a broken promise, a forgotten song, or a piece of old silver.
The sound of Ben’s raw, broken cough was a terrifyingly intrusion on the raging elements. Cass lowered the lantern, flooding the space beneath the willow with light. The dark red stain on his hand, the shallow, frantic rhythm of his breathing, it confirmed her worst fear. He wasn’t just wet and exhausted; he was internally injured, perhaps from falling on the treacherous cliff path or being tossed by the surging water.
Evan stumbled forward, forgetting the blinding pain in his ankle, the sight of Lila’s brother, pale and dying, hitting him with the force of a physical blow. The shame of his father’s lie, the terror of the cursed rope... it all vanished, replaced by the acute, familiar anguish of his failure to protect Lila.
“Ben,” Evan whispered, sinking to his knees in the cold, thick mud beside the huddled figure. “What happened to you? Why are you out here?”
Ben didn’t look at Evan; his eyes, were large and dark with fever and pain, they were fixed solely on Jonas, who stood rigid behind Evan, the heavy, canvas-wrapped coil of the cursed rope hanging like a burden from his shoulder.
“The rope,” Ben gasped, his voice weak, rattling in his chest. He pushed the broken silver locket forward, offering it like a trade. “Mr. Cole. You took the piece. You were supposed to put it back. You didn’t. The tide, it needs the Bell to toll. It needs the wish to be made.”
Jonas shifted uncomfortably, the silence of a decade collapsing around him. “Ben, look at me. The Bell is poisoned. It’s cursed. It won’t grant a wish; it will take your life, and Lila will still be gone. You need a doctor.”
“No,” Ben insisted, shaking his head weakly, which sent a fresh spasm of coughing through him. The dark stain grew. “Lila… she said the Bell would answer if the heart was true. She said the price was worth the answer. I saw you take it, Mr. Cole. The night Evan left. I followed you to the station. You didn’t lose it; you kept it to keep the town quiet.”
Evan realized the terrifying irony: Ben didn’t know the curse would kill him and everyone nearby. He only knew that Jonas Cole, the keeper of all things that matter on the coast, was withholding the one thing that could save his sister’s soul.
“Ben, I’m here,” Evan said, reaching out to touch his shoulder. “It’s Evan. I know about the rope. I know you want to bring Lila peace. But listen to me, that Bell is a lie. It’s a trick. It won’t work. You’re dying right now, Ben. We need to get you warm, and we need to get you help.”
Ben finally focused his eyes on Evan’s face, a flicker of bewildered recognition in the depths of his pain. “Evan… you shouldn’t be here. You left. The light… you chose the city. You didn’t pay the price.” He coughed again, the sound wet and sickening. “I will. I will ring the Bell. Give me the piece, Mr. Cole. Please.”
Jonas remained silent, immovable. He wouldn't risk giving the key to the curse to a desperate, dying boy, even if that boy was the brother of the girl his son felt responsible for.
Cass knelt instantly, placing the lantern down and shedding her jacket. She quickly checked Ben’s pulse, it was rapid, shallow, and thready.
“Evan, he’s weak,” Cass said urgently. “He has internal bleeding. He needs professional medical help, not a hike up a cliff. He’s hypothermic. We have to get him to shelter, now. The station is closer than the lighthouse, and it has the fire.”
“The station is a trap!” Jonas retorted, his voice tight with sudden, genuine panic. He clutched the canvas coil. “Ben knows I have the rope. If we go back there, he might try to grab it when we help him. The moment he touches that thread, the curse is active. I can’t risk that.”
“His life is more important than a piece of cursed rope!” Evan argued, pushing himself up, the cold fury in his voice making him feel temporarily stronger than the pain in his ankle. “Lila is gone, Father. We can’t let her brother die, too. I won’t let that happen. We take him back to the station. We give him the heat, and then we figure out how to call for help.”
“Call for help how?” Jonas countered, looking around wildly at the marsh and the roaring storm. “The lines are down! The main road is flooding! We can’t get a car here. The only thing with power is the Sentinel, and that’s two miles of climbing! We either leave him here, or we secure the rope first!”
Cass stood up, grabbing the heavy, thick tarpaulin Ben had been using for cover. She ripped it in half with a sharp, powerful motion, revealing the determined strength beneath her light demeanor.
“We don’t leave him, and we don’t risk the coil,” Cass declared, her voice sharp and decisive. “We have three options, and we have to choose the one that buys us the most time.
“One: Go back to the station. Warmth, but high risk of the tide covering the tracks completely, and Ben is close to the rope. Two: Try to carry him up the cliff path to the Sentinel. Exposure, impossible hike, and Evan’s ankle won’t hold. Three: The hidden signal.”
Evan and Jonas looked at her, confused by the last option.
“The what?” Evan asked.
“The old-time signal,” Cass explained, her eyes shining with desperate inspiration. “Before radios and phones, the keepers used a forgotten system of flashes not the main beam, but the small, secondary beam in the old service window to signal the local town doctor in emergencies. The doctor's family cottage, the old Mather place, is right on the shore, about a mile from here. It’s the closest, fastest place to signal.”
Jonas’s eyes widened, a flicker of genuine respect in his gaze. “The old kerosene lamp code. No one has used that in sixty years. Dr. Mather’s son, the current doctor, wouldn’t know it.”
“He wouldn’t,” Cass agreed, pulling Evan’s jacket over Ben’s chest, trying to stop the shivering. “But Dr. Mather’s grandmother might. The cottage is old. We can't rely on the current generation, but the old generation of lighthouse families still know the code. We need to get up the cliff just high enough to see the Mather cottage, and we need to flash the code.”
Evan looked at Cass, realizing the weight of her proposed plan. It was incredibly risky, forcing them onto the exposed cliff in the storm, but it was their only chance to save Ben without risking the curse.
“I’ll go,” Evan said immediately. “I’m faster than Father, even with the bad ankle. I can make it to the lower viewing platform. It has a lamp. I know the Lighthouse’s secondary lamp system.”
“No,” Jonas commanded, stepping forward, the coil heavy and solid in his grasp. “The cursed rope is volatile. If he is going to force the toll, he will need the right place, the Bell Tower. The closest point on the path to the Bell Tower is the cliff path. If he thinks we are going up there, he will follow.”
Jonas looked at Ben, his gaze cold and calculating. “We can’t risk him following us up the cliff. I will go. I will take the coil. He won’t expect me to leave him. He’s here for the rope, and I am the only one he trusts to have it.”
Evan grabbed his father’s arm. “You can’t go alone. What if you slip? What if Ben wakes up fully and sees you leave? He’ll follow, Father. He’s already injured.”
“Then we split up,” Cass announced, forcing the terrible choice upon them. “Evan, you stay here. You’re injured, and you’re the familiar face. You watch Ben. You keep him calm. You keep him from trying to move, and you keep him from trying to go after the rope. Jonas, you go. You take the coil to the lower viewing platform. Flash the signal. Get help.”
Jonas looked at Evan, the canvas coil heavy and cold in his hand. Leaving the son he had just emotionally betrayed with the dying brother of the girl he felt guilty for, it was an agonizing test of his duty.
“The signal is simple, son,” Jonas said, his voice quiet, filled with a profound, final resignation. “Three long flashes. Three short. Three long. It means ‘Life at Risk, Coastal Emergency.’ If the Mather woman sees it, she’ll call the town doctor.”
Evan nodded, his eyes locked on his father’s. The hatred and resentment were gone, replaced by a deep, mutual understanding of the terrible burden they now shared.
“Go, Father,” Evan urged. “Be fast. Be safe. I won’t let him move.”
Jonas gave a curt, final nod. He turned and plunged into the swirling, rain-soaked blackness of the trees, the heavy coil a dark shadow disappearing into the storm.
Cass looked at Evan, her face pale, her hands trembling. She wrapped the thick tarpaulin around Ben, securing it tightly.
“Evan, you have to promise me,” Cass whispered, her voice barely a breath. “You cannot let him get close to that rope, no matter what happens. That coil is deadly. It will take him, and it will take you. We are his last chance.”
Evan looked down at the dark, still figure of Ben, the silver locket glinting weakly in the lantern light. He felt the cold wood of the carved lighthouse heavy in his own pocket.
“I won’t let him touch it,” Evan vowed, his voice low and firm. “But if he dies right here, right now, knowing I had the chance to save him, I won’t be able to live with myself.”
Just then, a faint, rhythmic thud began to pulse from the direction Jonas had taken, the sound of heavy, labored steps ascending the lower cliff path. Jonas was climbing.
Ben stirred again, his eyes struggling to open. He looked directly at Evan, a strange, knowing smirk flickering across his feverish lips.
“The rope… the price,” Ben murmured, his voice slurred, barely audible. He reached out a hand, not toward the missing coil, but toward Evan’s chest. “You should have left, Evan. The tide always collects the debt.”
And then, his eyes drifted shut, and he fell silent. But as his hand slipped, the small, broken silver locket fell from his grasp and landed in the mud, right at Evan’s feet.
Evan reached down and picked up the locket. It was tarnished, broken, and heavy with the weight of Lila’s short life. As he wiped the mud away, he realized the locket wasn't empty. Tucked inside the tiny compartment was a folded, brittle piece of paper, too small to be a letter, too thick to be a memory.
Had Ben’s last, desperate act been to hide his sister’s final secret, and was it a confession of guilt, or a revelation of a far deeper plot?
