Chapter 41
"He'll either destroy them or move them somewhere we can't reach," Miles finished grimly.
As the twins stepped aside to make their call, Ioannis felt the weight of their multi-layered strategy settling over her. Through their bond, Nickolas's steady confidence bolstered her own, his strategic mind complementing her creative intuition in ways that still amazed her.
"This is becoming more complex by the minute," she murmured to him as the others discussed logistics.
"Like one of your intricate artworks," he replied softly, his hand finding hers. "Each element serves both practical and symbolic purposes."
The comparison made her smile despite the gravity of their situation. "I never thought my artistic training would be useful in preventing a pack war."
"It's precisely because you don't think like a traditional warrior that your insights are so valuable," Nickolas said, his storm-grey eyes softening as he looked at her.
“I’m glad you think so, my Alpha. All the other Alpha heirs I met before you would tell me that I was wasting my time that would have been better suited in other ways, while the men took care of things, most of them didn’t like that I knew how to fight, regardless of our pack's traditional background.” Ioannis said with a small smirk.
Nickolas's expression darkened at her words. Through their bond, she felt a surge of protective indignation mixed with disbelief.
"Their loss," he said simply, his hand tightening around hers. "Any Alpha heir who couldn't see the value in your mind as well as your strength wasn't worthy of your consideration, let alone your bond."
The twins returned, their expressions unusually serious. "Sera's in," Brodie announced. "She was already near Forest Mountain territory, monitoring some situation of her own."
"Which means she likely already knows something is brewing," Jordyn observed with a frown.
"She's agreed to meet us at the Tavern Hidden Nightingale in three hours," Miles added. "Neutral ground, just outside pack territories."
Alpha Holland nodded briskly. "Federico, you'll accompany them. I want someone with direct pack authority present for this negotiation."
"And me," Ioannis said suddenly, surprising herself with the certainty in her voice.
Nickolas stiffened beside her, his protective instincts flaring through their bond. "That's unnecessarily risky. If Marcus has spies watching..."
"Then they'll see exactly what we want them to see," she interrupted gently. "The Luna who challenged Forest Mountain met with potential allies. Nothing suspicious about that."
"She's right," Luna Holland said, her silver-streaked hair catching the torchlight as she nodded approvingly. "And Sera Blackwood is more likely to respect a female negotiator, given her history with traditional pack hierarchies."
Jordyn's expression remained troubled. "If you're going, then all three of us should accompany you," he said, indicating himself and the twins. "Sera knows us, and she'll expect Storm Strider representation anyway."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's internal struggle between his tactical mind, which recognised the logic of her participation, and his protective instincts, which rebelled at the idea of her leaving secure territory.
"I'll be fine," she assured him softly. "The Hidden Nightingale is well-known for its neutrality. Even Marcus wouldn't violate that sanctuary."
"I'm coming too," Nickolas said firmly, his tone brooking no argument. "Not because I don't think you can handle it, but because we present a united front. Always."
The warmth of his words flowed through their bond, his respect for her capabilities balancing his desire to protect her. This wasn't about control or dominance; it was about partnership, about facing dangers together rather than separately.
"Agreed," Ioannis said, smiling at him with genuine appreciation.
"Then it's settled," Alpha Holland declared. "The rest of us will implement the visible confusion Marcus will expect, while you secure this additional leverage." He fixed the twins with a stern look. "And try not to start any bar fights this time."
"That was one time," Brodie protested.
Miles lifted his eyebrow at that moment, “Should we ask Lara about that, Brodie?”
“Hey, then we should ask your two lovers, Leo and Millie?” Brodie shot back.
Jordyn groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Please, for the love of the Goddess, let's not bring up Miles's complicated romantic situation right now. We have actual life-or-death matters to address."
"It's not complicated," Miles protested. "Leo and Millie understand each other perfectly. They just both happen to understand me, too."
Nickolas cleared his throat pointedly. "Focus, please. We need to prepare for this meeting with Sera."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt his mixture of exasperation and fond amusement at the twins' antics. Despite the gravity of their situation, she found herself grateful for their irreverent energy, it prevented the weight of their circumstances from becoming crushing.
"We should change into less formal attire," she suggested, gesturing to her ceremonial clothing. "The Hidden Nightingale caters to a diverse clientele. We'll attract less attention if we blend in."
"Good thinking," Federico agreed. "I'll arrange transportation, something inconspicuous."
As the group dispersed to prepare for their respective missions, Luna Holland pulled Ioannis aside, her silver-streaked hair gleaming in the torchlight. "A moment, daughter."
When they were alone, Luna Holland reached into a small pouch at her waist and withdrew what appeared to be an ordinary silver hairpin. "This belonged to my grandmother, passed down through generations of Lunas."
"It's beautiful," Ioannis said, admiring the delicate craftsmanship.
"It's more than beautiful, it's useful," her mother replied with a meaningful look. "The tip contains a fast-acting sedative derived from wolfsbane. One scratch will incapacitate even an Alpha-level wolf for approximately five minutes. Enough time to escape a dangerous situation."
Ioannis accepted the hairpin with new appreciation, recognising it as both a family heirloom and a concealed weapon. "You think I'll need this?"
"I think preparation prevents desperation," Luna Holland replied, helping her daughter secure the pin in her silver-blonde hair. "Even neutral ground has its dangers, especially in times like these."
Through her bond with Nickolas, Ioannis felt his approach before she heard his footsteps. He had changed into dark clothing that would blend easily in the tavern's shadowy interior, practical rather than ceremonial, though no less imposing.
