Chapter 34

Chapter 34
Miles snorted with laughter. "Much better."

They reached the war room to find it already buzzing with activity. Maps covered every surface, and messengers waited with sealed pouches ready for departure. Elder Marlow sat at the central table with the formal challenge documents spread before him, his weathered hands making final adjustments to the ancient phrasing.

"The challenge is ready," he announced as they entered. "Traditional wording with modifications to account for your joint representation and the Council's authority."

Nickolas moved to read over the document, Ioannis beside him. The formal language was archaic but unmistakably clear; they were challenging Forest Mountain's territorial claims and their right to interfere in allied pack affairs.

"When do the messengers depart?" Beta Marcus asked.

"Within the hour," Alpha Holland replied. "Forest Mountain will have the documents by tomorrow evening, giving them exactly the minimum time required by pack law to respond."

"And if they refuse?" Jordyn asked, his strategic mind clearly working through contingencies.

"Then they forfeit any claim to legitimacy," Elder Marlow replied. "But Marcus Thorne is too clever for that. He'll accept, but he'll try to manipulate the terms to his advantage."

Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's determination solidify into something unshakeable. Whatever form the challenge took, they would face it together.

"There's something else," Luna Holland said quietly from where she stood by the window. "Our scouts report that Violeta requested to see you both again. She claims to have remembered additional details about Forest Mountain's plans."

The twins exchanged glances. "The girl who sold you out to Forest Mountain wants another chat?" Brodie asked, his usual humour replaced by suspicion.

"Sounds like a trap," Miles added, his green eyes narrowing. "Or guilt trying to buy forgiveness."

Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's wariness echo her own. "What kind of details?" she asked her mother.

"She won't say. Only that it's something Marcus mentioned during..." Luna Holland paused delicately, "during her punishment. Something she dismissed as bragging at the time, but now realises might be significant."

Jordyn stepped forward, his tactical mind already working. "If she has legitimate intelligence, we need it. But we can't trust her motivations."

"Then we don't go alone," Nickolas decided. "Full security, multiple witnesses, and we assume everything she says is potentially compromised."

Alpha Holland nodded approvingly. "Brodie, Miles, you'll accompany them. Your...unique perspective on deception might prove valuable."

The twins straightened with mock solemnity. "Oh, we're excellent at detecting bullshit," Brodie declared.

"Professional grade," Miles confirmed. "We've been practising on each other for twenty-three years. And we’ve had a lot of practice with humans’ bullshit as well, it’s quite enlightening actually."

“It’s also where both of you got your potty mouths,” Jordyn chimed in, rubbing his left hand down his face.

"And our sophisticated palates," Miles protested. "Human cuisine has layers of complexity that pack food lacks."

"You mean sugar and caffeine," Jordyn replied dryly. "Neither of which qualifies as sophistication."

"Spoken like someone who's never experienced the transcendental joy of a properly made cappuccino," Brodie shot back, though his tone remained light.

Alpha Holland cleared his throat, drawing attention back to the matter at hand. "If we're going to question Violeta again, we should do it before the challenge response arrives. Once Forest Mountain replies, she becomes either more valuable or more dangerous."

Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's agreement with her father's assessment. "Then we go now," she decided. "The longer we wait, the more time she has to construct whatever story serves her best interests."

As they prepared to leave the war room, Elder Marlow caught Ioannis's arm gently. "A word of caution, young Luna. Desperation makes people unpredictable, both in their honesty and their deceptions. Trust your instincts, but verify everything."

The walk to the healing wing felt different this time. Where before it had been urgent but hopeful, now tension crackled in the air around their small group. The twins flanked Ioannis and Nickolas with deceptive casualness, their earlier humour replaced by professional alertness.

"She's been asking for you specifically," one of the guards reported as they approached Violeta's room. "Won't speak to anyone else, not even her own Alpha."

Alpha Brightwater emerged from the adjacent chamber, his expression troubled. "My niece claims what she has to share will determine whether your challenge succeeds or fails. But she's... fragile. The trauma of her experience with Marcus and his Alpha has left her paranoid, seeing conspiracies everywhere."

"Including ones that might actually exist," Miles observed quietly, his usual levity absent.

They entered to find Violeta sitting up in bed, her appearance markedly different from what they had seen on their previous visit. Where before she'd seemed broken and defeated, now nervous energy radiated from her slight frame. Her hazel eyes darted constantly toward the windows, as if expecting threats to materialise from the shadows.

"You came," she said, relief evident in her voice. "I wasn't sure you would, after everything."

"We're here for information, nothing more," Nickolas said bluntly, his protective instincts clearly on high alert through their bond.

Violeta nodded, seeming to expect his coldness. "Marcus didn't just recruit displaced wolves and rogues. He's been in contact with human government officials, ones who know about our existence."

The words hit the room like a physical blow. Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's shock mirror her own. Human-werewolf relations were carefully managed, built on generations of secrecy and selective revelation.

"That's impossible," Brodie said flatly. "The treaties..."

"The treaties are exactly what Marcus is using," Violeta interrupted, her voice gaining strength as she spoke. "He's convinced them that the current pack system is unstable, that rogue wolves pose a growing threat to human settlements. He's offering to consolidate all werewolf territories under centralised control, with human oversight."

The implications sent ice through Ioannis's veins. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's fury building like a storm front, barely contained beneath his controlled exterior.

"Human oversight of pack affairs," Miles said slowly, his usual humour completely absent. "That's not just breaking tradition, that's ending our independence entirely."

"It gets worse," Violeta continued, her fingers twisting nervously in the blanket. "The humans he's dealing with aren't just local officials. Marcus mentioned something about 'federal interest' government departments that have been monitoring supernatural populations for decades."

Brodie exchanged a sharp look with his twin. "The kind of departments that would see werewolves as either assets to control or threats to eliminate."
