The Afterlife - Valeria's POV

The Afterlife - Valeria's POV
Darkness surrounds me. I’m not sure where I am or what just happened. But I feel happy and free.

There’s no pain or sound. Only the slow unraveling of light.

I float, not in the way leaves fall, but like a memory slipping from a dream. My body is behind me now, somewhere distant and mute. Ahead, a vast stillness stretches wide before me, painted in colors I can’t name. Stars pulse like quiet heartbeats. There is no time here. No breath. Only the feeling that something final has happened.

Am I really dead?

I should cross the line. I could have. But something tugs at me, pulling me back.

It isn’t fear or unfinished duty or vengeance. It is warmer, deeper. A gravity that speaks in a voice of a single name.

Kendric.

His name is a tether wrapped around my spirit, burning with sorrow, love, and a pain so deep it splits the void. I can feel him. His grief is like storm clouds brewing on a hot summer day. Somewhere, far beneath the evil that separated us, he is screaming my name. Holding my body and refusing to let go.

You idiot, I whisper, or thought I did. You’re going to rip the world open.

I turn toward the pull, but the great stillness behind me calls me with a promise of peace. Final, everlasting peace. But even in my death, my blood remembers his. Our bond isn’t fully gone. It has simply been paused.

The space around me begins to shift.

Light gets brighter. Stars blink out. Shadows creep in. Not of darkness, but of a memory. Trees emerge from the ether, gnarled and arching, their roots adrift in nothing. I stand there, or think I am, on a path that has no ground.

Across from me, through the mists of whatever this place is, he appears.

Kendric has finally found me.

Not his flesh, but it’s him. The essence of him. His eyes are filled with unbearable grief. His hands outstretched toward me as if he wishes to cross to meet me, but he can’t. Something has allowed his soul to brush against this realm, if only for a heartbeat.

“Val,” he whispered.

I blink, tears forming in my eyes. “You’re supposed to be alive. What are you doing here?”

“You’re not supposed to be gone.”

Our hands reach for one another, but never touch. Space bends, time cracks. My spirit aches to fall into his arms.

He kneels, clutching something to his chest. “The witches broke the curse. We will be reborn.”

Something calls to me from behind. I turn, looking toward it.

“I can’t…” he began, but the words died. “Don’t go.”

I turn around, looking beyond him where the mist turns gold. The crossing. His final peace.

“You said we were bound,” he said, his voice breaking. “You swore it. We’re supposed to go together.

“I did,” I say, my voice merely a whisper.

“Then don’t break it now.”

Something stirs in me. It’s a cold burning fire. The soul’s echo of a warrior’s defiance. I’m not ready. Not yet. There is still a battle to finish and a life to live. Still blood to repay and love to be found.

I choose to return.

The mists quake. The world convulses. From the edges of death, I scream. Not in fear, but in a command.

“I’m not done!”

The stars above shatter like glass. Wind rushes around me. Kendric, who has faded from view, but is still barely visible, reaches for me.

“I will find you,” she swore.

The light roars. The liminal space collapses.

And I fall.

But the fall isn’t like falling. It’s like being torn apart.

The path collapses beneath me, and I’m pulled backward through the veil. Colors rip across my vision in red, gold, and violet. Not seen, but felt. They hum with memories I can’t hold on to float to my mind. A child’s laughter that might be mine, the scent of steel and snow, Kendric’s lips pressed to my forehead before a battle. They rush past me like wind through leaves, and I try to grasp them, but they scatter like ash.

Time reforms in shattered pieces. Seconds. Hours. Ages. It’s all the same here. I’m moving fast and slow all at once, like I’m being rewritten.

Something resists me.

The world doesn’t want me back. It closed its door. Sealed me out. But love, real love, is a kind of defiance. It doesn’t obey laws, not even death. And Kendric’s voice, his grief, his fury, his desperate, endless hope, rattles the heavens. He opens the wound in the veil. I just have to choose.

And I do.

I’m not done.

Light stabs through the mist like spears. I scream. Not from pain, but effort. My soul is folding in on itself, remaking the vessel it once filled. I can feel the heat of my blood, the heaviness of skin, the weight of breath dragging itself back into lungs.

I am returning. But I don’t return alone.

Something follows me.

A shadow, sharp-edged and cold. It clings to the trail I carved back, watching. Waiting. Whatever magic allowed me to return didn’t go unnoticed. The veil isn’t meant to be breached. I feel it. A presence older than time, who is curious, and hungry.

But I don’t stop.

Below me now, the dark becomes red. Then red becomes earth. Then earth becomes pain. A single heartbeat slams through my chest.

Another.

I jolt as if struck by lightning.

My eyes snap open.

There’s weight on my chest. The air is thick and humid. My limbs are numb. A pressure rests on my forehead. Kendric’s palm. His voice is ragged, whispering something I can’t yet hear. His tears fall, hot, onto my cheek.

He’s still holding me. His body is shaking. His heart is broken wide open.

I want to speak, to tell him I made it back, but I can’t yet move. My mouth is stone. My breath is shallow.

But my soul knows.

I am home.

Not fully alive. Not yet. But no longer dead.

The cost will come. I feel it in my bones. Something ancient has turned its gaze toward us. And the world I return to will not be the same.

But Kendric is here. And I will rise for him.
