Chapter Twenty Seven
Astrid woke to the sound of the Nexus’s morning chime—a soft, melodic hum that filled her quarters like a gentle reminder that the world was still intact. She stretched and swung her legs off the edge of the bed, rubbing her eyes as she tried to shake off the lingering weight of the previous day.
The events at the Bastion still lingered in her mind, a haze of chaos, energy, and VORIK’s haunting words.
“You are the key.”
She shook her head, muttering under her breath. “Not the wake-up call I needed.”
Her door chimed, sliding open a moment later to reveal TESS. Their sharp green eyes flickered faintly as they stepped inside, their usual air of sarcasm firmly intact.
“Good morning,” TESS said, their tone dry. “Or at least it was until I remembered we’re still cleaning up your mess.”
Astrid frowned, crossing her arms. “My mess? Pretty sure I wasn’t the one who summoned the chaos god back into existence.”
TESS smirked faintly. “Fair point. But you’re still the anomaly. That makes you everyone’s favorite wildcard.”
Astrid groaned, running a hand through her hair. “Fantastic. So what’s the crisis this time?”
TESS’s smirk faded, their tone turning serious. “The Archive flagged another anomaly in the energy patterns surrounding the Nexus. LUX wants to brief you in person.”
“Another anomaly?” Astrid asked, her stomach sinking. “Please tell me it’s not VORIK again.”
“It’s not him,” TESS replied. “But it’s something. Come on.”
The Archive was alive with activity when Astrid and TESS arrived. Glowing projections filled the air, their shifting patterns casting faint light across the room. LUX stood at the center, his towering frame still and commanding as his glowing blue eyes scanned the data.
“Morning,” Astrid said, stepping up beside him. “What’s the emergency?”
LUX turned to her, his calm voice cutting through the hum of the Archive. “Another fracture has appeared.”
Astrid’s pulse quickened. “Another fracture? Where?”
LUX gestured to the projection, which shifted to display a glowing map of the Nexus’s surrounding regions. A pulsing red dot marked the location of the disturbance—a jagged, angular expanse of terrain that seemed to writhe under the map’s light.
“The Red Verge,” TESS said, their tone laced with unease.
“Sounds charming,” Astrid muttered, studying the map.
“The Verge is an unstable region,” LUX explained. “It is where the Nexus’s energy flows are weakest, making it vulnerable to disruption.”
Astrid crossed her arms. “So, you’re saying it’s basically chaos bait?”
“In a manner of speaking,” LUX replied.
The three of them boarded a transport shortly after the briefing, the hum of the engines steady as they flew toward the Red Verge. Astrid leaned back in her seat, her arms crossed as she tried to keep her nerves in check.
“Any chance this is just a glitch in the readings?” she asked, glancing at TESS.
“Doubtful,” TESS replied. “The Verge doesn’t glitch—it reacts. If there’s a disturbance, it’s real.”
Astrid sighed, her stomach twisting. “Awesome.”
LUX’s calm voice broke through her thoughts. “You have faced greater challenges than this. You will succeed again.”
Astrid gave him a faint smile, though the knot in her chest didn’t loosen. “Thanks for the pep talk, Coach.”
When they arrived at the Red Verge, the air felt heavier, charged with an unsettling energy that made Astrid’s skin prickle. The ground beneath them was uneven, the jagged terrain glowing faintly with erratic pulses of light.
“This place is... alive,” Astrid said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“The Verge is a reflection of the Nexus,” LUX said. “It mirrors its energy flows, but its instability makes it unpredictable.”
“Unpredictable how?” Astrid asked, stepping carefully across the uneven ground.
“Shifts, fluctuations, spontaneous reactions,” TESS said. “Basically, don’t trust anything you see.”
“Great,” Astrid muttered, glancing nervously at the flickering patterns beneath her feet.
As they moved deeper into the Verge, the energy around them grew stronger. The air shimmered faintly, distorting the space ahead of them like heat waves rising from the ground.
“Do you feel that?” Astrid asked, her chest tightening.
LUX nodded. “The fracture is near.”
They reached a clearing, its center dominated by a swirling mass of energy that pulsed erratically, casting sharp shadows across the jagged terrain. The fracture was smaller than the vortex at the Bastion, but its chaotic movements were just as unnerving.
“Let me guess,” Astrid said, her voice tense. “Stabilize it before it gets worse?”
TESS smirked faintly. “You’re catching on.”
Astrid approached the fracture cautiously, her pulse quickening as the chaotic energy pressed against her. She could feel the weight of it, heavy and unyielding, like it was testing her resolve.
“You’ve done this before,” LUX said from behind her, his voice steady. “You know what to do.”
Astrid took a deep breath, reaching out toward the fracture. The energy surged around her, pulling her into the familiar void of the Core’s presence.
The Core’s voice greeted her, calm but firm. “Astrid Vale. The fracture must be repaired. Focus on the pathways.”
“Got it,” she muttered, her hands moving instinctively as the chaotic patterns unfolded before her.
The energy resisted her efforts, its movements wilder and more erratic than before. Astrid gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stay focused as she guided the pathways into alignment.
“You are capable,” the Core said, its voice steadying her. “Trust in yourself.”
Back in the Verge, TESS and LUX stood guard, their gazes fixed on the swirling fracture. The ground trembled faintly beneath their feet, the energy growing stronger with each passing moment.
“Something’s wrong,” TESS said, their tone sharp. “The fracture’s destabilizing faster than expected.”
LUX’s glowing eyes narrowed. “She will succeed.”
“She’d better,” TESS muttered.
Inside the void, Astrid felt the energy shift, its resistance growing stronger as she worked to stabilize the pathways. Sweat beaded on her forehead, her arms trembling from the effort.
“Come on,” she muttered through clenched teeth. “Hold together.”
The pathways began to align, their chaotic movements smoothing into harmony. Astrid pushed harder, guiding the final pieces into place.
With a blinding flash of light, the fracture stabilized, its chaotic energy fading into a calm, rhythmic pulse.
Astrid stumbled back, gasping for air as the void dissolved around her. She blinked, her vision clearing to find LUX and TESS standing nearby, their frames illuminated by the now-stable energy.
“You did it,” TESS said, their tone laced with relief.
Astrid wiped sweat from her brow, her legs trembling. “Yeah, barely.”
LUX stepped forward, his glowing blue eyes steady. “The balance holds. You have succeeded once again.”
Astrid gave him a faint smile, though her chest still felt heavy. “Let’s hope it stays that way.”
