Chapter Twenty Two
Astrid’s voice echoed through the chamber, cutting through the oppressive hum of energy. Both VORIK and LUX turned toward her, one with cold, glowing defiance, the other with those burning red eyes filled with malicious amusement.
“You’re bold to return here, human,” VORIK said, his voice rumbling like distant thunder. “And foolish.”
Astrid swallowed hard, her knees trembling beneath the weight of his gaze, but she held her ground. “Yeah, well, I’m full of bad ideas. Guess this is just another one for the list.”
LUX straightened, his glowing blue eyes flicking to her. “Astrid, you shouldn’t be here.”
“You’re welcome, by the way,” she shot back, taking a step forward. “I just saved the final anchor. Now it’s your turn to not get obliterated.”
A low, rumbling laugh escaped VORIK, the sound reverberating through the chamber. “Admirable, but meaningless. The anchors may be stabilized for now, but the cracks in their foundation remain. The balance you cling to is a lie, and I am its truth.”
Astrid’s fists clenched. “Funny. For someone who’s supposed to be all-powerful, you sure seem to enjoy monologues.”
VORIK tilted his head, his glowing red eyes narrowing. “Careful, human. Your fire is amusing, but it will not protect you.”
The room shuddered as VORIK raised one jagged arm, energy crackling along its length. Astrid’s pulse spiked, and for a moment, she froze, every instinct screaming at her to run. But then she saw LUX, battered and unyielding, stepping in front of her.
“You will not touch her,” LUX said, his voice cold and commanding.
VORIK sneered. “Protecting the human will be your undoing, King. She is the key to my release. And you…” His voice darkened, dripping with mockery. “…are her leash.”
LUX’s frame tensed, his glowing eyes blazing brighter. “Her strength is her own. She is not yours to control.”
Astrid’s breath hitched. She glanced at LUX, something tightening in her chest at the certainty in his voice.
“I don’t need a protector,” she said, stepping up beside him. “But thanks for the backup.”
LUX gave her a slight nod, his stance unyielding as he turned back to VORIK.
The air crackled with tension as VORIK advanced, his massive frame exuding raw, chaotic energy. The markings on the walls pulsed violently, their patterns distorting into jagged, dissonant lines.
“You cannot stop me,” VORIK said, his voice a mix of fury and glee. “The balance you fight to protect is already fractured. My return is inevitable.”
“Maybe,” Astrid said, forcing her voice to stay steady. “But not today.”
She turned to LUX, her mind racing. “Tell me we have a plan here.”
LUX’s gaze flicked to her, calm and calculating. “The anchors have been stabilized. VORIK’s power remains limited—for now.”
“For now isn’t good enough,” Astrid said, her voice rising. “How do we stop him for good?”
“The Core,” LUX said. “Its energy is the only force capable of countering his chaos. But using it will require precision—and risk.”
Astrid nodded, determination hardening her features. “Then let’s do it.”
VORIK laughed again, the sound shaking the chamber. “You think the Core can save you? Its light dims even now, faltering under the weight of my will.”
“Yeah?” Astrid snapped. “Well, maybe it just needs a push.”
The room erupted into chaos as VORIK lunged, his jagged limbs slicing through the air with terrifying speed. LUX met him head-on, the clash of metal against metal sending sparks flying.
Astrid stumbled back, her heart pounding as the two giants battled. Every strike from VORIK sent shockwaves through the chamber, the floor trembling beneath her feet.
“Stay focused!” TESS’s voice snapped through her earpiece, startling her.
“TESS? You’re still here?” Astrid shouted, ducking as a piece of debris flew past her.
“Where else would I be?” TESS replied dryly. “The Core’s energy is accessible from the terminal in the next chamber. Get there, and we might have a chance.”
“Might?” Astrid muttered, sprinting toward the glowing corridor TESS had indicated. “Really selling me on this plan!”
The next chamber was smaller but just as foreboding. A glowing console stood at its center, pulsating faintly with light. The energy in the air was overwhelming, pressing against Astrid like an invisible weight.
“TESS, I’m here,” she said, her voice shaky. “What now?”
“Engage the Core interface,” TESS instructed. “It will guide you.”
Astrid hesitated, her hand hovering over the console. She could hear the clash of LUX and VORIK in the distance, the sounds of their battle growing louder.
“Here goes nothing,” she muttered, pressing her hand against the glowing surface.
The energy enveloped her instantly, pulling her into the familiar void of the Core’s presence.
“Astrid Vale,” the Core’s voice echoed, calm but strained. “You must act quickly. The balance is fragile.”
“I know,” she said, her voice firm. “What do I do?”
“The containment matrix must be reinforced,” the Core said. “You will channel my energy into the Bastion. It will bind VORIK’s chaos once more.”
Astrid frowned. “And what happens to me if I do this?”
The Core hesitated, its light dimming slightly. “There is… risk.”
Astrid clenched her fists. “Yeah, I figured that much.” She took a deep breath, steadying herself. “Let’s do it.”
The pathways of energy unfolded before her, wild and chaotic. Astrid moved instinctively, guiding the Core’s light through the fractured patterns. The resistance was stronger than ever, the energy pushing back with a force that made her entire body tremble.
“You are capable,” the Core said, its voice steadying her. “Trust in your strength.”
Astrid gritted her teeth, pushing harder. The patterns began to align, their chaotic movements smoothing into harmony.
Suddenly, a shockwave rippled through the void, breaking her focus.
“Astrid Vale,” the Core said urgently. “VORIK’s chaos is resisting. You must hold the alignment.”
“I’m trying!” she shouted, her hands moving frantically.
Back in the chamber, LUX delivered a powerful blow to VORIK, sending the jagged figure stumbling back. But VORIK recovered quickly, his red eyes blazing as he turned toward the corridor leading to the Core’s chamber.
“She cannot stop me,” VORIK growled, advancing.
LUX blocked his path, his glowing blue eyes unwavering. “You will not reach her.”
VORIK lunged, his jagged limbs colliding with LUX’s frame in a thunderous clash.
In the Core’s void, Astrid felt the energy stabilize, the pathways locking into place. The light around her flared, radiating with a strength that sent a pulse through the Bastion.
“It is done,” the Core said softly.
Astrid stumbled back, gasping for breath as the light faded.
The chamber shook violently as the Core’s energy surged through the Bastion. VORIK froze, his red eyes widening as the chaotic energy around him began to dissipate.
“No!” he roared, his voice echoing with fury. “This cannot be!”
LUX stood tall, his frame battered but unyielding. “It is over.”
Astrid stepped into the chamber, her legs trembling but her resolve steady. “Yeah. It’s over.”
VORIK’s form flickered, his jagged frame beginning to dissolve. “This is not the end,” he growled, his voice fading. “Chaos cannot be contained forever.”
With a final, echoing roar, VORIK disappeared, leaving only silence behind.
Astrid collapsed to her knees, exhaustion washing over her. LUX approached, his glowing eyes scanning her with quiet concern.
“You did it,” he said softly.
“We did it,” Astrid corrected, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
For the first time in what felt like forever, the Bastion was still.
