Chapter Eleven

Astrid stood frozen, her eyes locked on the glowing sphere of the Core. Its surface pulsed and shifted like liquid light, radiating an energy so strong she could feel it humming in her chest. The tendrils of light extending from it seemed to reach for her, flickering faintly as they moved closer.

Her stomach churned. She wanted to back away, to put distance between herself and whatever this thing was, but her feet refused to move.

“It can sense your hesitation,” LUX said, his deep voice breaking through the silence.

Astrid turned her head sharply to look at him. He stood a few feet away, his towering frame still and calm. His glowing blue eyes were fixed on her, unreadable but intense.

“What is it doing?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“It is… examining you,” LUX replied, stepping closer. “The Core is the essence of our world. It sees everything, including what lies beneath the surface.”

Astrid’s throat tightened. “Beneath the surface? What does that mean?”

Before LUX could answer, the Core flared brighter, its light filling the chamber. Astrid winced, shielding her eyes with her hand as the hum in the air grew louder, vibrating through her body.

“Astrid Vale,” a voice whispered, soft but resonant, echoing in her mind.

Her heart stopped. She looked around wildly, but the room was empty except for her and LUX.

“Did you hear that?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“Hear what?” LUX asked, his tone steady but curious.

“The Core,” Astrid said, her gaze snapping back to the sphere. “It—it said my name.”

LUX’s glowing eyes narrowed slightly. “It is rare for the Core to communicate directly. What else did it say?”

Astrid hesitated. “Nothing. Just my name.”

She could feel the Core’s presence pressing against her, not threatening but heavy, like it was waiting for her to do something. The warmth in the air intensified, wrapping around her like an invisible embrace.

“What does it want from me?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

“That depends on what you are willing to give,” LUX said, his voice softer now.

Astrid swallowed hard, her hands clenching at her sides. She took a deep breath and stepped closer to the Core, ignoring the way her heart pounded against her ribs.

The closer she got, the stronger the energy became. It wasn’t just warmth—it was emotion, swirling and pulling at her in waves. Curiosity. Fear. Longing. It was as though the Core wasn’t just looking at her, but into her, searching for something she couldn’t name.

Her hand hovered over the glowing surface, trembling slightly. “What happens if I touch it?”

LUX didn’t move. “The Core will show you what it sees. It will reveal the truth of your place here.”

Astrid glanced back at him. “What if I don’t want to know the truth?”

“Then you should step away,” LUX said, though his tone carried a weight that told her he didn’t believe she would.

Astrid bit her lip, her gaze shifting back to the Core. Every instinct screamed at her to turn around, to walk away. But something stronger—something deep inside her—urged her forward.

“Here goes nothing,” she muttered, and pressed her hand against the surface.

The moment her fingers touched the Core, a blinding light enveloped her. Astrid cried out, but the sound was swallowed by the energy rushing through her. Her mind spun as images and sensations flooded her senses, too fast and chaotic to process.

She saw glimpses of Daryon, its metallic forests and gleaming towers stretching endlessly under a golden sky. She saw the Nexus, its glowing cubes spinning and rearranging like pieces of a massive puzzle.

And then she saw herself—standing alone, her reflection shimmering and distorted. But it wasn’t just her reflection. It was her. The Core was showing her who she was, not just on the surface but deep down, where her fears, hopes, and doubts lived.

“You are more,” the voice whispered, echoing in her mind. “More than you know. More than they understand.”

“What does that mean?” Astrid tried to ask, but the words caught in her throat.

The images shifted, and now she saw LUX—his towering form surrounded by light. He stood still, unyielding, but there was something in his glowing eyes that made her chest tighten. A flicker of vulnerability. A quiet yearning.

“LUX…” she whispered, reaching out toward the image, but it dissolved before her hand could touch it.

The light faded as quickly as it had come, leaving Astrid gasping for breath. She stumbled back, her legs threatening to give out, but a strong hand caught her arm and steadied her.

LUX.

He stood close, his grip firm but careful. “You are unharmed?” he asked, his glowing eyes scanning her face.

“I think so,” Astrid said, her voice shaky. Her heart was still racing, her mind struggling to make sense of what she’d just experienced. “What was that?”

“The Core showed you its truth,” LUX said, his voice quiet. “And perhaps… your own.”

Astrid met his gaze, her stomach twisting. “It said I was ‘more than they understand.’ What does that mean?”

LUX hesitated, his eyes narrowing slightly. “The Core does not speak lightly. Its words carry weight, even if their meaning is not immediately clear.”

“That’s not exactly reassuring,” Astrid muttered, running a hand through her hair.

“It was not meant to be,” LUX said, stepping back. “But now you have seen what lies at the heart of our world. The question is, what will you do with it?”

Astrid stared at him, her chest tightening. She didn’t have an answer—not yet.
