Chapter Thirty-four: Holding On

Natacha’s POV

The city lights flickered outside the window, casting a soft glow across the apartment as I stood in the kitchen, absentmindedly stirring my tea. The day had been long—one of those days where every hour felt like a battle against exhaustion, against stress. My body ached from back-to-back meetings, but my mind was still wide awake, restless in a way I couldn’t quite explain.

I sighed, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug, hoping the heat might soothe me. But it wasn’t just work weighing on me tonight.

It was Alex.

Or rather, the way Alex had changed in the last twenty-four hours.

His confession. His vulnerability.

The way he had let me in.

I had always known that Alex carried a weight heavier than most. He was guarded, calculated, always keeping his emotions on a tight leash. But last night, he had let it slip—just enough for me to see the pain he had been carrying for so long.

And today?

Something was different.

It was subtle, but I could feel it in the way he held me, in the way his eyes softened when he looked at me. It was as if, for the first time, he was allowing himself to breathe.

I turned toward the living room, my eyes landing on Alex. He was sitting on the couch, one leg stretched out, the other bent at the knee. He was holding a pen, turning it between his fingers absently, lost in thought.

I knew him well enough by now to recognize when he was overthinking.

I set my mug down and walked over, settling beside him. He blinked, as if just realizing I was there, before offering me a small smile.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hey,” I echoed, tucking my legs beneath me. “You okay?”

He exhaled, rolling the pen between his fingers. “Yeah. Just thinking.”

“About?”

He hesitated, and for a second, I worried he might shut me out again. But then he turned toward me, his eyes searching mine.

“Today,” he admitted. “I went back.”

My stomach tightened. “Back where?”

He looked away for a moment, his jaw tightening before he spoke again. “To the house I grew up in.”

My breath hitched. I hadn’t expected that.

“You… you went back?” I repeated carefully.

He nodded. “I don’t know why. Maybe I thought I needed to see it, to prove to myself that it doesn’t control me anymore.”

I reached for his hand, threading my fingers through his. “And did it? Control you?”

He exhaled slowly. “No. Not anymore.”

Relief coursed through me, but I stayed quiet, letting him process his thoughts at his own pace.

He turned his hand, squeezing mine gently. “It was strange, standing there. I thought it would bring back more… memories. More anger. But all I felt was distance, like it was someone else’s life.” He looked at me then, his expression unreadable. “I think that’s because of you.”

My lips parted, but no words came out.

“You’ve changed me, Natacha,” he said softly. “I don’t feel like I’m stuck in that cycle anymore. For the first time, I feel like I can choose something different.”

Emotion swelled in my chest, my heart aching at the sincerity in his voice. I lifted my hand to his face, brushing my fingers along his jaw. “You did that, Alex. Not me. I just… reminded you that you could.”

He closed his eyes for a moment, leaning into my touch.

For so long, I had wondered if he would ever let go of the things that haunted him. And now, for the first time, I could see the answer.

He already had.

Later that night, we lay in bed, wrapped in the quiet hum of the city outside. Alex’s arm was draped over my waist, his breathing steady, but I could tell he was still awake.

“Alex?” I murmured, turning slightly to face him.

“Hmm?”

I hesitated. “Do you ever wonder what comes next for us?”

His eyes opened, his fingers tracing slow circles against my hip. “Yeah,” he admitted. “All the time.”

I swallowed, my heart pounding slightly. “And?”

He was quiet for a long moment before he spoke. “I want more with you, Natacha. A future. A life that isn’t just about running from the past.”

My chest tightened, warmth spreading through me. “Me too.”

He studied me in the dim light, his fingers brushing a stray curl from my face. “Then let’s build that together.”

I nodded, a small smile tugging at my lips. “Okay.”

It wasn’t a grand declaration. It wasn’t a promise sealed with extravagant words.

But it was real.

And for now, that was enough.

The next morning, I woke to the feeling of Alex’s lips pressed against my shoulder.

“Morning,” he murmured against my skin.

I smiled, stretching slightly before turning in his arms. “Morning.”

His gaze softened as he studied me. “I was thinking… we should do something today. Something different.”

I raised a brow. “Different how?”

He smirked. “Let’s get out of the city. Just for the day.”

I blinked. “Like a road trip?”

“Exactly.” He brushed his fingers over my arm. “No work. No distractions. Just us.”

A slow smile spread across my lips. “I like the sound of that.”

“Good,” he said. “Because I already have a place in mind.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “Of course you do.”

He grinned, pressing a quick kiss to my lips before pulling away. “Pack a bag. We leave in an hour.”

Excitement bubbled in my chest as I slid out of bed. It had been so long since I’d done something spontaneous, something without a schedule or an agenda.

And with Alex by my side, I had a feeling today would be unforgettable.

\---

The drive out of the city was peaceful, the early morning sun casting a golden glow over the roads as we sped past endless stretches of trees and open fields. The air felt lighter out here, free from the weight of expectations and responsibilities.

Alex had one hand on the wheel, the other resting on my thigh. Every now and then, he would glance over at me, his lips curling into the smallest of smiles.

“This is nice,” I said, breaking the comfortable silence.

He nodded. “Yeah. It is.”

I turned slightly, studying him. “So where exactly are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

I rolled my eyes. “You love being mysterious, don’t you?”

He smirked. “Keeps things interesting.”

I shook my head, but I couldn’t hide my smile.

Thirty minutes later, we pulled into a secluded spot by a lake, the water shimmering under the sunlight. Tall trees lined the shore, their leaves rustling in the gentle breeze.

I stepped out of the car, inhaling deeply. The scent of pine and fresh air filled my lungs, a stark contrast to the city’s usual scent of coffee and asphalt.

“This is beautiful,” I whispered.

Alex walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. “Yeah,” he murmured. “I thought you’d like it.”

I leaned into him, closing my eyes for a moment.

I had spent so much of my life chasing stability, searching for something that felt safe. And now, standing he

re with Alex, I realized that I had finally found it.

Not in a place.

Not in a plan.

But in him.

In us.

And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid to hold on.
