Chapter Twenty-six: Uncharted Territory
Natacha’s POV)
The city stretched before her like a sea of golden lights, endless and full of possibilities. The view from Alex’s penthouse had always been breathtaking, but tonight, it felt different. Tonight, it wasn’t just a stunning backdrop—it was the world she was about to step into with him.
Natacha curled her legs over Alex’s lap as they lounged in the dimly lit living room. The air smelled of expensive whiskey and the faint trace of Alex’s cologne, a scent that had become as intoxicating as his presence. The room was quiet, save for the faint hum of the city below and the occasional clink of ice in his glass.
She studied him in the dim glow of the room—his sharp jawline, the slight crease in his brow, the way his fingers tapped against his glass as if lost in thought. She had spent so much time trying to understand Alex Delacroix, unraveling the enigma of the man who had both claimed and unsettled her heart. But now, in this moment, she realized she didn’t need to understand everything. She just needed to be here.
“You’re staring,” Alex murmured without looking away from his drink, amusement lacing his tone.
Natacha smirked. “I’m just making sure you’re real.”
That earned her a chuckle, low and rich, as he finally turned his head toward her, dark eyes gleaming. “You have your ways of testing that,” he mused, his free hand drifting up her arm, slow and deliberate.
A blush crept up her neck, but she held his gaze. “And yet, you still surprise me.”
Alex studied her for a moment, the playfulness in his gaze giving way to something deeper, something raw. “You surprise me too, little one.”
She had grown used to the way he called her that, but now it felt different. The words held more meaning than before, a silent acknowledgment of how their relationship had evolved. It wasn’t just about dominance or control anymore—it was about trust.
Natacha leaned back slightly, shifting so she could look at him fully. “Do you ever think about how far we’ve come?”
Alex exhaled, setting his drink down on the glass table beside him. “Every day.”
A silence settled between them, heavy but not uncomfortable. It was a silence filled with understanding, with the unspoken words of two people who had fought against their own demons and somehow found solace in each other.
Natacha ran her fingers along the hem of her sweater, fidgeting slightly. “I never thought we’d get here,” she admitted softly.
Alex reached out, his fingers tracing along her jawline, his touch both possessive and reverent. “Neither did I.”
His honesty sent a shiver down her spine. For so long, she had wondered if Alex’s feelings for her were simply a reflection of his need for control, a game of power he refused to lose. But now, she saw the truth in his eyes. He hadn’t just wanted to own her—he had wanted to love her.
She exhaled, resting her forehead against his. “What happens now?”
Alex’s hand slid to the back of her neck, his grip firm yet gentle. “We move forward.”
Natacha pulled back slightly to search his face. “Together?”
He smirked. “Always.”
The weight of that word settled deep in her chest. Always. It wasn’t just a promise; it was a commitment. One she was finally ready to make.
“I want this,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I want us.”
Alex’s eyes darkened with something raw, something deep. “Then you have me.”
His lips found hers in a kiss that stole the air from her lungs, one that spoke of everything they had been through and everything still to come. His hands slid to her waist, pulling her closer as if he needed to feel her against him, to remind himself that she was real.
She melted into him, her fingers threading through his hair, anchoring herself in the sensation of his touch. This wasn’t like their past encounters—this wasn’t about dominance or submission, about proving a point. This was about them, about what they had built despite every reason they shouldn’t have.
When they finally broke apart, Natacha rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. “You know,” she murmured, “I think we were both afraid of this.”
Alex ran his fingers down her back, his touch soothing. “Afraid of what?”
She smiled against his shirt. “Of the feelings we couldn’t control.”
He was quiet for a moment before chuckling softly. “You might be right.”
Natacha lifted her head, tilting it slightly. “Might?”
He smirked. “I’m never fully admitting to that.”
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop the laughter that bubbled up in her chest. “Of course not.”
Alex leaned forward, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “But I will admit this—I don’t want to be afraid anymore. I want this. I want you.”
Her heart swelled at his words, the sincerity in them washing over her like a wave. “Just me?” she teased, though her voice was laced with emotion.
His gaze darkened. “Only you.”
The weight of those two words sent a shiver through her, a sensation she welcomed.
They sat in comfortable silence, the city lights flickering outside the window like distant stars. For the first time in a long time, Natacha wasn’t thinking about the past, about the mistakes and the regrets. She was thinking about the future, about the life they could build together.
After a while, she shifted in his arms. “You know, I was thinking…”
Alex raised a brow. “Dangerous words.”
She rolled her eyes but grinned. “Maybe we should take a trip. Somewhere just… for us. No distractions, no pressures.”
His expression softened. “Where do you want to go?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know yet. Maybe somewhere quiet, somewhere new.”
Alex considered her words before nodding. “I like the sound of that.”
Her lips curled into a smile. “Yeah?”
He leaned in, brushing his nose against hers. “Yeah.”
The idea of leaving everything behind for a while—no expectations, no outside interference—felt like the fresh start they both needed. A way to explore this new version of their relationship without the weight of the past looming over them.
But even as she thought about it, she knew one thing for certain: no matter where they went, as long as they were together, it would be home.
Natacha looked at Alex, her heart full. “We’re really doing this, aren’t we?”
His lips curved into that signatu
re smirk of his. “We are.”
And for the first time, Natacha didn’t feel scared.
She felt free.
