Chapter Twenty-two: A Fragile Grip
Alex’s POV
Alex sat at his desk, staring at the computer screen, though he wasn’t really seeing it. His fingers tapped idly against the polished wood surface, a rhythmic beat that matched the pounding of his heart. His mind kept drifting back to Natacha, to the tension that had been between them the last time they had met. He could still feel her body close to his, the lingering warmth of her breath against his skin. He hadn’t imagined the way she had softened, the way her walls seemed to crack just a little. It was something he had worked for, something he had wanted.
But was it enough?
He’d spent the last few days replaying their conversation in his mind, analyzing every word she had said, every glance she had cast his way. There had been hesitation in her eyes, but there had also been something else—a flicker of understanding, of longing. She hadn’t been immune to him. He knew that. But there was still the question of whether she was ready to fully embrace what he had to offer—or whether she was still too tethered to the past.
Alex rubbed a hand over his face, sighing deeply. It was maddening, the way his feelings for her had escalated so quickly, so completely. He had spent years controlling everything around him, building walls around his own heart to protect himself from the chaos of emotions. But Natacha? She had torn down those walls without even trying. And now, he found himself struggling to keep his composure, to maintain the calculated control that had always been his greatest asset.
He was a man who thrived on power, on dominance, and he had made it clear to Natacha that he would never let her slip away. Yet, as much as he tried to convince himself that it was simply a matter of control, he knew deep down it was more than that. It was about connection. It was about needing her in ways he hadn’t expected.
There was still a part of him that doubted whether she would ever truly give in to him. She was young, barely out of her teenage years, with a world of possibilities ahead of her. And yet, there was something about the way she looked at him—something that told him she saw him for who he really was, not just the mask he wore.
His thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. He looked up, instinctively straightening his posture as the door creaked open. A man stepped inside—his right-hand man, Dmitri.
“You’ve been quiet lately,” Dmitri remarked with a raised eyebrow. “Something’s on your mind.”
Alex gave a short nod, his gaze shifting back to the desk. He didn’t feel like talking about it, didn’t want to explain the turmoil he was experiencing. But Dmitri was perceptive, always had been.
“Just… thinking,” Alex muttered, his voice low.
“About her,” Dmitri said, the words more of a statement than a question.
Alex’s jaw tightened. He didn’t like how easily Dmitri read him, but there was no denying it. The thoughts of Natacha consumed him, and even though he tried to keep his distance, he couldn’t. She had a hold over him, one that he wasn’t sure he wanted to break free from.
“She’s confused,” Alex replied, his voice betraying the frustration he felt. “I can feel it. And I’m not sure how much longer I can keep playing this game.”
“You don’t have to play,” Dmitri said, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed. “You’re in control. Always.”
Alex shook his head, standing up from his desk. “It’s not that simple. She’s not like the others. She’s not a pawn I can manipulate and discard when I’m done.”
“Then what do you want?” Dmitri pressed. “You’ve been pushing her for months. What’s stopping you now?”
The question hit Alex harder than he expected. What was stopping him? Was it the fear that he couldn’t break through her defenses? Or was it the realization that, for the first time in his life, he didn’t have the answers?
“I don’t know,” Alex admitted, his voice tight with frustration. “I want her, but I don’t want to destroy her in the process. She’s not like the others. She matters.”
Dmitri didn’t say anything for a moment, just watching him with a knowing look. Finally, he spoke.
“Maybe you need to stop trying to control everything,” he suggested. “Maybe you need to let her make the decision, even if it’s not the one you expect.”
Alex ran a hand through his hair, letting out a frustrated sigh. Dmitri was right, in a way. He had spent so much time trying to bend Natacha to his will, trying to keep her under his thumb, that he hadn’t stopped to consider what she actually wanted.
The thought unsettled him. What if she didn’t want him at all? What if she was just playing along, pretending to care, all the while wishing for something—someone—else?
He couldn’t bear the idea of losing her, but at the same time, he knew he couldn’t keep her if she didn’t choose him.
“I need to see her,” Alex said suddenly, his voice filled with determination. “I need to know where she stands.”
“Don’t be reckless,” Dmitri warned, but Alex was already walking toward the door. He didn’t have time for caution, didn’t have time for second-guessing. He needed to face this head-on.
Natacha needed to understand that he wasn’t going to let her slip away again. She was his, whether she realized it or not.
\---
Later that evening
The night air was cool against his skin as Alex stepped out of his car, his mind focused entirely on the task ahead. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting from Natacha, but he knew one thing for certain—he needed to see her.
His heart pounded in his chest as he approached the door to her home. He had done this before, knocked on her door with a purpose, but this time felt different. This time, there was more at stake.
Natacha was in there, and the fragile thread that held them together was fraying, ready to snap. He didn’t want to lose her, but he also couldn’t keep pretending that everything was under control.
Before he could even reach for the doorbell, it opened, and there she stood—Natacha, her face soft but guarded, as if she had known he was coming.
“Alex,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, but there was something in her eyes—something that told him she was just as uncertain as he was.
“Natacha,” he replied, his voice thick with emotion. He stepped closer, feeling the tension between them, but there was something else, something beneath the surface—a flicker of something that could turn into something more.
“Can we talk?” he asked, his tone almost pleading.
Her eyes softened, and for a moment, she didn’t answer. Instead, she stepped aside, silently inviting him in. He walked past her, their bodies brushing ever so slightly. It was enough to send a jolt through him, reminding him of what was at stake.
They settled into the living room, the silence between them heavy, thick with all the unsaid words that hung in the air. Alex sat down, his gaze never leaving her.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” he began, his voice low. “But I need to know if you’re willing to try. If you’re willing to choose me.”
Natacha hesitated, her fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. She was beautiful, so beautiful, and in that moment, Alex realized just how much he had come to care for her—how much he needed her.
“I don’t know if I can choose you,” she finally said, her voice quiet but resolute. “I’m still figuring things out. And I don’t want to hurt anyone, especially not Eric.”
Alex’s chest tightened at the mention of Eric, the one obstacle that stood between them. But he wasn’t going to give up. Not now.
“I know it’s complicated,” he said, his voice steady. “But I can’t keep pretending that what we have doesn’t matter.”
Natacha looked at him then, really looked at him, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still. There was so much unspoken between them, so much emotion that neither of them could fully express. But there was something there, something that had been there all along.
“I don’t want to choose between you and Eric,” she whispered, almost too softly to hear.
Alex leaned forward, his gaze intense. “Then don’t choose,” he said. “Let me show you what we can be. Let me prove to you that we can make this work.”
There was a pause, a beat of silence that stretched on forever, and then Natacha finally spoke, her voice barely audible, but filled with an unexpected certainty.
“I’m willing to try.”
And for the first time in wha
t felt like forever, Alex allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, they had a chance.
