Chapter 14 Double or Nothing

Chapter 14 Double or Nothing
Mandy Martinez gasped, her eyes gleaming with mischief as she stepped forward. "Careful, Klaus. You raise the stakes with me, and you might just get burned."

Klaus Randals threw his head back and laughed, the sound loud and confident, echoing lightly across the workspace. "Oh, Mandy, you know I'm not here to play it safe."

They stared at each other, both with playful smirks. Their eyes locked in a knowing challenge, the kind that came from years of close friendship built on banter, competition, and the thrill of pushing each other toward bold decisions. They’d done this dance before, each coming out on top at different times, never missing a chance to rub the victory in the other's face. But this time, the stakes were higher—more layered, with more room to brag. The prize? Winning over the princess of Lustrelle. After six years working side by side at Lustrelle Company, they knew each other’s tricks, habits, and the perfect moments to push each other’s buttons.

Mandy tilted her head, her lips curling. "Okay then. Double or nothing." Her voice came out firm, not raised, but carrying the weight of a challenge she fully intended to see through.

Mandy turned her gaze and settled on their target. Camille Lustrelle sat at her desk, diligently focused as she scribbled away, a task she hardly seemed suited for. Her posture leaned forward just slightly, brows dipped with concentration as she followed whatever instructions she’d been given that morning, completely unaware that she had become the center of a quiet, amused clash between two coworkers who loved a competitive thrill.

"Double or nothing," Klaus echoed, his tone cocky and full of swagger, mirroring hers but with an added flare that made Mandy roll her eyes.

Straightening his tie, Klaus puffed out his chest with exaggerated pride, as if daring Mandy to doubt him. He believed in his charm, and he had proof of it. It had worked over and over again—laughs in bars, lingering looks in elevators, flirtations he didn’t even have to try hard for. Girls swooned just to have some of his attention, and the idea of turning the Lustrelle princess’s head thrilled him in a way he hadn’t admitted out loud. He liked challenges with a bit of spectacle, and this one came with a spotlight he found irresistible.

When Mandy floated the bet, he jumped at it without hesitation. Camille Lustrelle—the youngest of the Lustrelle legacy—was infamous for her wild nights, lavish parties, and scandalous flings. Her escapades had filled tabloids for years, making her more of a headline than a professional. Everyone knew her name, but no one had ever taken her seriously, not until she suddenly showed up at the office and tried to look the part. With big money riding on it, and bragging rights hanging between him and Mandy, this was the perfect chance to show her who the real winner between them was. This wasn’t just about the money anymore; it was about pride, reputation, and proving himself to the one person who never let him take the easy route.

And losing to Mandy again? That wasn’t happening today.

Mandy gave him a friendly nudge. "Let's go," she said, bumping his shoulder. "I'll be generous and let you have first go. Make it count, Klaus."

Klaus laughed, grabbing his coffee cup and taking a long, satisfied sip. The warm drink helped clear his mind, giving him an easy jolt as he set the cup down with a confident clink. He followed Mandy toward the open office space by the break room, aware of the slight changes in atmosphere—the familiar scent of printed paper, the faint hum of computers, and the low conversations drifting from different corners. Employees moved around with purpose, some balancing stacks of documents, others returning from the copier with fresh printouts. It was a typical busy morning, but to Klaus, it felt like the perfect stage.

They had bonded strongly over competition and charisma. They were both adored within the office for it—two magnetic personalities who knew exactly how to draw attention and keep it. They saw in each other a perfect sparring partner, someone who understood the thrill of diving headfirst into challenges without hesitation. This time was no different. Mandy leaned in, lowering her voice so it barely reached above the hum around them.

"Just be smooth," she murmured, as if offering advice even though she already knew he was set on his own plan.

Klaus smirked his trademark grin. "Smooth's my middle name. Or should be." His swagger only grew more pronounced as he moved toward his desk. He’d make his move just before lunch, when the office softened into that slow stretch of the day and people’s guard lowered. It gave him time to observe, to plan, and to make sure he hit at the right moment.

He took a deep breath, letting the atmosphere around him settle in. The quiet tapping of keyboards, the hum from the printers, the occasional laugh that broke through from one of the cubicles—it all filled the room with a rhythm he’d grown familiar with over the years. He lived for this combination of competition and opportunity, and today had lined itself up perfectly.

He couldn’t help but glance over at Camille’s desk. Unlike his own cubicle, hers sat out in the open, right outside Mrs. Larson’s office, almost like she’d been placed there where everyone could see her progress. Camille herself seemed lost in her notes, her pen gliding across the surface with quick movements as she jotted things down. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear every few minutes, only for it to fall again, but she didn’t seem to mind. She kept working, unaware of the eyes on her.

Klaus let his mind wander for a moment. He imagined a scenario where they stayed late after work, papers spread around them, the buzz of the empty building humming quietly. He pictured her leaning closer, tired from the day, grateful for someone keeping her company in a space that could feel cold after hours. He could already see how easily his charm would slip into place, how the Lustrelle princess might soften under attention she didn’t expect.

He turned slightly toward Mandy’s cubicle and muttered under his breath, more to himself than to her, “This is going to be easy.”

Mandy met his gaze with a laugh, raising her brow as if she had heard every word despite the low volume. "Don’t bite off too much," she teased, but the glint in her eye showed she believed in him more than she’d admit out loud. She leaned back against her chair, arms folded loosely, waiting to see how he’d pull this off.

Klaus waved a playful hand, brushing off the warning. "Watch me."

He sank into his chair, leaning back as he glanced over at Camille once more. She was still absorbed in her work, the tip of her pen moving without pause as she filled the page. He took a look around the office—the framed company posters on the walls, the wide windows letting in natural light, the soft murmur of collaboration drifting through the room. It all felt set up for him, a scene he’d step into when the moment was right.

Lunch wasn’t far. Soon, people would start stretching, closing laptops, and gathering their belongings for a quick break. That shift in the room would give him the perfect opening. Mandy sat a few desks away, watching him with that half-amused, half-expectant expression she always wore when she knew something ridiculous was about to unfold.

She tapped her nails on her desk. "Clock’s ticking, lover boy."

Klaus chuckled low, brushing invisible lint off his shirt as he leaned forward. "Relax. Great things take time."

He cracked his knuckles, rolled his shoulders, and let his eyes drift once more to Camille, the center of their bet, the focus of his upcoming move, completely unaware that two bored, competitive coworkers had turned her into their afternoon entertainment.

Whatever happened next, Klaus planned to make it memorable. And Mandy, watching from her desk with a grin she tried to hide, looked ready for every second of the show.
