Chapter 47 Gathering of Big Shots
Chapter 47 Gathering of Big Shots
Everyone looked at each other in confusion. Christopher gave Coach Woods a meaningful look: "Principal Quinn, you don't know this, but I just attended a lesson on how to be a good teacher. I really need to learn more from Coach Woods."
"Oh?" Principal Quinn's eyes lit up as he looked at Coach Woods with appreciation. "Then I should humbly seek his advice too."
"Ha, this lesson taught me how to use my position as a teacher to play favorites, exploit student resources to build my own connections, and achieve true class mobility." Christopher emphasized the words "class mobility," making Coach Woods' face turn red and white with embarrassment.
Principal Quinn thought Christopher was genuinely praising Coach Woods, but hearing the sarcasm, his expression changed. He glanced at Coach Woods with displeasure and stepped back, worried Christopher might think they were connected.
"Pfft—" Owen couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Evelyn also lifted the corners of her mouth in a mocking smile.
"But I really can't learn such shameless tactics, so I've been reflecting—" Christopher drew out his words and gave a light snort, "Maybe I'm not fit to be a teacher. Perhaps I should just resign."
"No, please, you absolutely cannot resign." Principal Quinn pleaded: "If you resign, where am I going to find a teacher of your caliber?"
Coach Woods' face flushed red with anger and indignation. "Principal Quinn, is this gentleman a teacher at your school? Who exactly is he that you, as the principal, have to beg him so humbly not to resign? Hmph, and this Evelyn is from your school too, right? A male teacher getting so close with a female student—doesn't that look bad?"
"Don't talk nonsense!" Principal Quinn immediately cut him off, pulling him aside to speak in a low voice: "Do you know who this gentleman is?"
Coach Woods was taken aback and frowned, still stubborn: "A high school teacher—what background could he have? Unless he's like this Owen, with a boss for a brother?"
Coach Woods finished with a defiant snort. When it came to connections, he knew plenty of parents who owned companies and were bosses. Take the people at this table right now—except for Gabriel and his group, which of the other students didn't come from families worth hundreds of millions?
Principal Quinn shook his head helplessly. "Christopher is not only a specially appointed teacher at our school, but also a senior technical officer at the Department of Defense."
"Department of Defense?!" Coach Woods exclaimed in shock.
Their whispered conversation also reached the ears of several students eavesdropping nearby. They immediately got excited: "Department of Defense, this guy is actually from the Department of Defense."
"Gabriel actually knows someone from the Department of Defense?"
Just then, a middle-aged man called out from behind to Principal Quinn: "Quinn, it's time to start the meal. Why aren't you coming?"
As he spoke and walked over, he suddenly let out a surprised gasp and quickly walked up to Evelyn, saying respectfully: "Miss Grant, it's been so long. You're here too."
Evelyn glanced at Governor Thomas and nodded slightly with a smile. "Long time no see."
One of them was just dressed like an ordinary high school student, while the other was clearly a middle-aged man of considerable status. Yet this middle-aged man was treating Evelyn with utmost respect, while Evelyn showed no sign of being intimidated and acted quite boldly.
Everyone couldn't help but whisper to each other, speculating about the middle-aged man's identity.
They could see that the principal from that California high school also showed great respect when he saw this middle-aged man. But who could be more important than a school principal?
The people at the table only dared to whisper quietly, not making any louder sounds, so the entire table was left with only Governor Thomas's crystal-clear small talk.
"The weather's getting colder lately, you must take care of your health."
"I was planning to visit you, but I've had so many meetings lately."
"I heard your brother transferred schools. That's why today, when I was passing by after a meeting, I thought—"
After just a few sentences, Evelyn couldn't help but frown and scratch her ear, then irritably spat out one word.
"Annoying."
As soon as she spoke, Governor Thomas's expression changed, but he wasn't angry—he just smiled awkwardly.
The others looked at them in surprise, increasingly feeling that Evelyn was pushing her luck. She should really consider her family's actual situation—if she truly angered these well-mannered important people, ten lives wouldn't be enough.
"Quinn, Ethan, what are you doing?" As they were talking, someone else walked over with his hand on a young man's shoulder.
Coach Woods immediately turned around when he heard the voice, smiling humbly: "Principal Miller, you're eating here too."
The other students, including Gabriel, all stood up and greeted the middle-aged man: "Hello, Principal Miller."
This was the principal of Gabriel's new school.
Governor Thomas just nodded at Principal Miller, then pulled over the young man whose shoulder he'd been holding. "Miss Grant, this is my son Caleb. You two should exchange contact information and keep in touch."
The young man said rather unhappily: "Dad, I don't just add anyone—"
"Smack!" Governor Thomas slapped him on the forehead, looking exasperated. "This is the Evelyn from California High School I've been telling you about."
At these words, the young man's expression immediately changed, his rebellious face now full of warmth.
"Evelyn, hello, I'm Caleb. Do you have Instagram? We should be friends." He'd already been told repeatedly at home by his dad how remarkable this girl was—not only did she dare to directly confront gang bosses, but she could even get the Secretary of Defense to help her. He had to maintain a good relationship with her.
Evelyn gave him a cold glance and didn't respond.
The young man wasn't offended. He opened his Instagram profile like showing off a treasure: "I have quite a few followers. Look, I can scuba dive and ski. I can take you sometime. I can also..."
"Annoying." Evelyn spoke again.
So the young man and his father Governor Thomas both shut their mouths, but they didn't want to leave either. They began serving Evelyn food and pouring her drinks with great attentiveness.
The surrounding students were all stunned. While Evelyn didn't know this young man, they were all too familiar with him—this Caleb was the school's notorious bully. He usually threw his weight around at school because his dad was the governor. But what was he acting like now... How could he be so docile and obedient, like a cat without any temper?
Caleb's dad was the California governor—everyone suddenly looked at Governor Thomas.
He slapped Caleb on the back of the head again, pointing at Gabriel. "Evelyn's brother is going to be your classmate. You need to look after him at school."
Caleb immediately agreed with a smile: "Really? That's great. Which one is Gabriel—oh, it's you, bro."
As Caleb spoke, he quickly walked over to Gabriel and slapped him hard on the shoulder, saying loudly: "You're my good brother from now on. If you don't like someone, just come find me. I'll take care of them."
