The house was too quiet when Matthew returned. He had been out for only a short time, patrolling the edges of their neighborhood, but something felt off. The faint scent of Gabrielle lingered in the air, but it was mixed with another, darker presence.

“Gabrielle?” Matthew called, his voice echoing through the empty rooms.

No answer.

He scanned the living room, his sharp gaze catching small signs of a struggle, a chair slightly out of place, the faint scent of overturned coffee. Dread settled in his chest like a stone.

His jaw tightened as he picked up the faintest trace of her trail, leading out the door. He followed it instinctively, moving faster than human eyes could follow. It wasn’t long before the trail led him to an old, abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town.

Matthew pushed open the rusted door, the creak reverberating in the cavernous space. The air inside was heavy, stale, and charged with tension. His senses immediately locked onto Gabrielle—her heartbeat, faint but steady, echoed somewhere deeper in the building.

“Matthew…” The voice came from the shadows, smooth and mocking.

Ruelle stepped into view, his expression smug, his presence oozing menace. Behind him, Gabrielle sat tied to a chair, her head slumped forward.

“You’re predictable,” Ruelle continued, holding up a gleaming silver key. “I knew you’d come running. You always do.”

“Let her go,” Matthew demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

Ruelle smirked, tossing the key into the air and catching it. “You know I can’t do that. She’s too useful. Besides, I think she enjoys the attention.”

Matthew’s hands clenched into fists. “You’ve made a mistake.”

“Oh? Enlighten me,” Ruelle said with a laugh.

But Matthew didn’t waste time with words. In a flash, he moved toward Ruelle, the two colliding in a clash of strength and speed. Their battle shook the warehouse, each strike calculated, each movement a blur.

Ruelle fought with ruthless precision, using every dirty trick he knew. But Matthew’s resolve was unbreakable. Every blow he delivered was fueled by his determination to protect Gabrielle.

The fight culminated with Matthew gaining the upper hand, forcing Ruelle to the ground. The silver key tumbled from his grasp, clinking as it hit the floor.

“End of the line,” Matthew growled, his voice calm but resolute.

Ruelle froze, his smug demeanor replaced with panic. But Matthew wasn’t interested in any last words.

When it was over, Matthew stood alone in the warehouse, the silver key now in his possession. He turned to Gabrielle, rushing to her side and untying the ropes that bound her.

“Gabrielle,” he said softly, cradling her face.

She stirred, her eyes fluttering open. “You came,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“I’ll always come for you,” Matthew replied, his voice filled with emotion.

He scooped her into his arms and carried her out of the warehouse, his thoughts already turning to the key.

But those questions would have to wait. Gabrielle was safe, and that was all that mattered for now.

Back at home, Matthew laid her gently on the couch, wrapping a blanket around her.

“You’re hurt,” she said weakly, noticing the scratches on his arms.

“I’ll heal,” he replied, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You need to rest.”

Gabrielle reached out and took his hand. “You’re always saving me,” she said with a faint smile.

“I’ll never stop,” Matthew replied, his voice firm.

As Gabrielle drifted to sleep, Matthew sat beside her, the silver key glinting faintly in the morning light. He would uncover its secrets—but for now, his focus remained on the one person who mattered most.
