Gabrielle’s POV

The air in the room grew thick, suffocating. As Ruelle Margo’s presence settled into the space, the weight of his eyes bearing down on me, I felt the sharp chill of the world I had unwittingly become part of.

Every muscle in my body tensed, my heart hammering in my chest as I watched him take slow, deliberate steps toward me.

His gaze was hungry, cold, and it made my skin crawl.

Matthew had stormed out of the room moments ago, leaving behind a trail of tension that could have shattered the glass windows.

The abrupt silence was deafening, the hum of the office outside muted by the thick walls and the increasing feeling that something terrible was about to unfold.

“Everyone, out.”

Ruelle s voice had been sharp, commanding, almost like a threat hanging in the air.

One by one, the investors and coworkers stood, murmuring nervously amongst themselves, eyes darting between the tall figure of Ruelle and the door.

It was as if the entire office collectively realized just how dangerous this moment was.

As they filed out, Julian was the last to leave, his usual confident stride now slowed by the palpable dread in the air. He paused in the doorway, casting a glance back at me. The look on his face said everything: Stay strong. You’ll be alright.

When the door finally clicked shut, I was left standing there, my palms suddenly clammy, the silver key hidden in my pocket feeling like an anchor that weighed me down.

Ruelle Margo turned to face me, his smile wide, almost as if he found my unease amusing. The corners of his lips quirked in a way that made my stomach churn.

“Gabrielle, ” he said, his voice a smooth, dark melody that sent a shiver through me. “You’ve been the one keeping the silver key all this time, haven’t you?”

I swallowed, struggling to find my voice. The silver key—the key to everything. It had been in my possession without me ever realizing its full weight.

I had learned about it only recently, a relic tied to an ancient power, a treasure that Matthew had kept hidden, and now, Ruelle was here to take it from me.

I nodded, my words caught in my throat. “Yes... I know about it.”

His smile stretched wider, revealing the sharp edges of his teeth. There was something predatory in his eyes, and I couldn’t help but feel like a prey animal, surrounded by the smell of danger.

“Good,” Ruelle murmured, taking another step toward me. His movements were slow, purposeful. “It’ll make things much easier if you simply hand it over. I’ve been waiting far too long for this.”

The sound of his voice sent a chill down my spine, and I instinctively took a small step back, my hand still clutching the key in my pocket.

“No,” I managed, though my voice trembled. “I... I can’t give it to you.”

Ruelle tilted his head, as if considering my words, his eyes narrowing. “You misunderstand, Gabrielle. The silver key is not just any artifact. It’s the crown to the vampire world, the power that will allow me to rise beyond anyone’s reach. Without it, I am nothing.”

My heart skipped a beat. “You want to become the Grand Vampire,” I said, piecing the truth together.

Ruelle chuckled darkly, the sound reverberating off the walls. “Precisely. And with you, my dear, I will finally ascend to the throne I was meant to claim. You and Matthew are connected, aren’t you? By the bonds of marriage, yes, but also by something far more powerful.”

I shook my head, a twinge of confusion mixing with the fear rising within me. “What do you mean?”

His gaze flickered to the door where Matthew had disappeared moments ago, a flash of disdain crossing his features. “Matthew, for all his strength, is still just a puppet. A pawn in a game that has been played for centuries. The moment he inherits the throne, I’ll be there to take it from him. And you, Gabrielle,” he leaned closer, his voice lowering to a dangerous whisper, “will be the key to unlocking all of it.”

I felt a cold sweat on the back of my neck. My mind was racing, trying to make sense of everything. Matthew had told me that the silver key was something far beyond my comprehension, a tool to unlock unimaginable power. But I hadn’t realized just how deeply entwined my life had become with the vampiric world.

“You won’t get it,” I said, my voice firmer this time, even if my hands were shaking. “I don’t care what you do, I won’t give it to you.”

Ruelle stepped closer, his eyes glowing faintly red, his expression darkening. “You don’t understand, Gabrielle. You don’t have a choice. In a week, I expect that silver key to be in my hands. If you don’t, well... I’ll make sure Matthew understands the consequences of his defiance.”

His words hung in the air like a death sentence. The threat wasn’t just for me—it was for Matthew too.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “You won’t scare me into giving it up. I don’t care who you are. You’re not getting the key.”

Ruelle’s smile flickered, a flash of anger crossing his face before it disappeared, replaced by something darker. “You’ll learn, Gabrielle. You’ll learn exactly what it means to be caught in the web of power.”

The tension in the room was unbearable, the weight of his presence pressing against me. I couldn’t let him take the key—not now, not ever. But I knew I wasn’t in control here. Ruelle Margo had power I couldn’t even begin to understand, and the thought of what he might do to Matthew if I didn’t comply made my stomach turn.

Before I could respond, the sound of the door opening behind me made my heart leap. I spun around, hoping it was Matthew, but instead, it was Julian, his face pale and tense.

“Everything okay in here?” he asked, though his voice betrayed the worry simmering beneath the surface.

I didn’t get the chance to answer before Ruelle laughed, a cruel sound that echoed through the room. “Your master’s gone, Julian. No one’s coming to save her.”

But as Julian’s eyes flickered to mine, a silent understanding passed between us. This wasn’t over. Not yet.

“Ruelle,” Julian said, his voice low, “this doesn’t have to go any further. Let’s talk about this.”

Ruelle’s eyes flashed, and in an instant, he was on Julian, his speed so unnatural that I barely saw him move. A growl escaped from Ruelle’s throat as he shoved Julian against the wall, pinning him there with an iron grip.

“You think you can stop me?” Ruelle hissed, his fangs gleaming dangerously.

“Get off him!” I shouted, feeling my heart race as I watched Julian struggle.

But before I could move, the door to the conference room burst open with a resounding crash.

Matthew was back.
