Chapter 59 LOSS
SIANNA'S POV
Tears blocked my vision, and I knew that my mate's arms were around me as I stayed crumbled on the hospital floor. He wipes my wet eyes but more tears poured down, nothing could end the waterfall.
He pats my head and whispers comforting words but not even the mate bond could subdue the overwhelming pain of my loss. Hailey had died. At least that's what mom told us. Then why can't I believe her?
How did this happen? Who would hurt my Hailey? This was surreal.
My surroundings slowly vanished and I felt like this was a dream. We were just together a few hours ago. She was smiling and having fun. Only her face was clued into my mental vision. Seeing her laughing, dancing, and hugging me. Slowly memories of our times together flashed like a television screen.
My throat was feeling dry and sore from crying. Vance lifted me from the ground, cradling me in his arms. I wanted my Hailey back.
Suddenly, it dawned on me to look at her. I had to see for myself that she was gone. My mom was playing around because Hailey would never leave me. Yes, it's a sick prank that's going on. I had to give myself some other explanation to cope.
I wriggled my body violently out of Vance's grip, which he loosened for fear of hurting me. I rushed through the doors and into the operating room where her body lay still.
Footsteps echoed behind me but damn if anyone was going to take me away from her. I hastened to her side and removed the sheet from over her top half. Tears made my sight blurry but I wiped them furiously away.
I held her upright by the shoulders so that she was sitting up. Using one hand to support her inert body, my other hand caressed her cheeks, wishing for her to come back. Like an idiot, I began to talk to her as if she could hear me.
"Hailey, you are so pale." I pinched her cheeks to get some color there, but her pale white skin remained unchanged and I cried terrifyingly.
"Hailey, we are not done yet, remember?" I shook her but she wasn't waking up, so I hugged her to my chest, stroking her back. "I need you here with me."
"Sianna....." It sounded like my mom's voice.
"Go away!" I snarled, clutching Hailey tightly. "Come back to me, Hailey. Please!" I wasn't going to let her go.
She was the sister that I never had, my best friend, and my partner in crime. We did so many mischievous things together. Most of the fun that I experienced in my life was due to her vivacious and intrepid personality.
"Hailey, come back." That's all I could say. My tears fell onto her blouse, soaking through. The pain of losing her jabbed at me harshly.
"Sweetheart......" Vance came closer but I shrugged him away. He stopped and sighed heavily.
"Hailey!" I cried, my sweet best friend can't be gone. I closed my eyes and began singing to her our favorite song 'Oath' by Cher Lloyd with my cracked voice, rocking back and forth.
I let the sadness seep in and dwelled on my love for her. I would give the world to have you back. "I love you, Hailey."
My heart prickled with pain. I gripped her shoulder tightly and my breathing hitched. It felt like a stroke and a chill passed through my body. I was getting weak, my soul was leaving my body, and something was pulling at me.
My hands went numb and both Hailey and I fell backward on the table. Vance's hand scraped me up. The overwhelming fatigue made it impossible to fight him. My vision blacked out.
Hands were entwined with mine as the sparks washed over me. The light of the room hurt my fluttering eyes. Still, I forced them open to look at the white room where I lay. Vance's soft smile greeted me. I turned to get the fullness of his face. He looked tired and downcast. His face came forward and kissed my forehead.
"Hi sweetness," like a magnet, my eyes met his. He kissed my hands and I felt relief coursing through him.
"Sianna? You are finally awake." My mom called my name as she came over to my bedside from the chair in the corner of the
room.
"Mom," I said softly.
"Honey, how are you feeling?" she asked while doing the necessary checks.
"Tired." I gazed at the ceiling briefly before looking down again. My thoughts were blank and my head felt heavy.
"Any pain?" She inquired as she did her check-up on me.
"No, just really tired." I closed my eyes and slept again.
It was broad daylight when I woke up again. My handsome mate's head was on the bed close to my stomach. His hand was in mine as we both slept through the wee hours of the night.
Moving to remove the drip from my arms, I felt his warm hand stop me.
"Your mom should do another check on you before you think about doing anything," he warned, looking extremely unkempt. A curtain of his black hair covered his emerald eyes, I brushed them away to lock mine with his.
"I'm starving," my tummy rumbled like thunder. "Our baby is hungry."
"I'll get you fed once your mom is done." His fingers brushed my cheeks and I held them to kiss each one. I loved this man with my very essence.
My wolf was sleeping soundlessly. My body pined to be at home snuggling up to my man. He was the only comfort that I needed for today.
Mom strolled into the room with her stethoscope and charts. "Am I okay, mom?"
"Yes, you passed out. You lost energy due to crying so much." She checked my heart and pressure. "Honey, you have my grandchild to take care of."
"I know," I thought of Hailey for the first time since I awakened. My breath hitched and I closed my eyes and took deep breaths to regulate it. "How's Duke?"
"He'll be alright." Vance gave my mom the space she needed to move around the bed. "He's interrogating some people from the club."
My eyes watered as I felt deep sorrow and emptiness. "Did someone hurt her?"
"Yes, but we will handle that." He tried to reassure me so that I wouldn't stress out about it. I bit my trembling lip, resisting the urge to cry. Vance took me into his tender embrace.
My mom gently stroked my arms. "Don't cry, Sianna. Everything is alright." She kissed my headtop and smiled back at me." Hailey's alive."
Great, my mind's playing tricks on me. "Did her parents come by? Do they blame me?"
"They came and took her home." Mom was saying those words that didn't make any sense.
"Home to the morgue?" Narrowing my eyes to figure out this puzzle.
They both chuckled before my mom explained, "You healed Hailey so I discharged her to go home with her parents."
Wow, so that's what it was? I thought it was just my grip on reality that was being sucked out of me, to the point where I fell into a wormhole of darkness.
Suddenly, feelings of depression and glum evaporated from me as the good news sank in. "My girl is alive." I smiled at Vance. She pulled through. My Hailey.
"Sianna," Mom brought my attention to focus on her, she sighed with her right hand on my back and her left hand stroking my arm. "Hailey lost the baby, and she's having a hard time dealing with it."
I burst into tears while holding my stomach, thinking of my own child. No mother should ever lose her child and my heart cried for hers. "Can she have more babies?" I broke through my tears. Vance dried my cheeks.
She nodded with her motherly smile. "Of course, she can."
I briskly flung the sheet aside and got out of bed, but Vance stopped me and sat me back down on the bed. "Not so fast, where do you think you are going?"
Mom obviously advocated his position. Her stern look meant for me to get back in bed.
"I want to see Hailey." They knew better than to convince me otherwise.
"First things first, you should recover from the essence that you lost." She went to an overnight bag and pulled out a casual denim mini-shirt dress. "Get some food in your system, eat something light to go easy on your stomach."
I took the dress from her and removed the hospital gown from my body. I put my hands into the garment and Vance buttoned down the front for me. My baby bump had grown noticeably.
"Alpha, please stay home with her so that she can rest." She boldly instructed him. Mom got away with it only as his mother-in- law, "And no funny business for at least three days."
Vance groaned his disapproval, but mom held her ground. "I mean it." She kissed my forehead and disappeared out of the room. "I love you, hon."
I giggled and pulled his face down on mine. Our tongues danced inside our mouths as the kiss deepened. "I love you." The kiss continued but we had to stop before I uncaged his beast.
"I love you more, Firecat." He said affectionately as the kiss broke.
We walked out of the hospital, hand in hand. We got into his car in the parking lot when his phone rang. He answered as we drove past the security point. I leaned back my head on the seat to relax on the way home.
My instincts told me that Hailey would be crying and mourning her child, to state the obvious. We both looked forward to the baby shower that we'd have together and our babies being best friends. We even joked about the possibility of them being mates. "Who?" Vance asked hoarsely. His brows knotted as the man on the other end spoke. "Put him on."
He grimaced then softened his expression as he looked at me. "I'll put you on speaker. My Luna is here with me."
I earnestly waited to hear the two men talk. Vance placed his phone in the mount holder on the dashboard. "You may speak."
"Good morning, Luna, Alpha." The recognition of Raj's voice raised my concern. He was being formal and respectable as he should be to his superiors.
"Hi Raj," I answered but Vance was silent.
"Luna, is Hailey okay? I have been trying to call both of your phones but I couldn't get through. I felt her pain last night and I'm just a wreck." He rambled with pain in his voice. "I wanted to visit but my Alpha forbade me from trespassing into your
territory."
"Hailey is home with her parents but....." my words flowed away from me because of the bad news that I had to relate.".......but she lost the baby."
"Damn!" The repetition of those words turned into light sobs. I could tell that he was tearing apart.
"Raj," I summoned him to listen to me, "We give you permission to visit, but you have to stay at the pack house until Hailey is ready to see you. You'll have clearance at the entrance."
Hailey needed all the support that she could get from her mate, family, and friends. They have survived a lot and will need to rely on each other to get past this grieving period.
"Thank you," the croaking of his voice fluctuated his tone. "I'll leave right now."
"Accommodations will be made to host you. See you soon." I scratched my eyebrow hoping that he would hang up. Vance laughed at my thoughts. I wasn't being bad, I was just tired and possessively desiring my mate.
"Thanks again." The call concluded.
Vance customarily held my hand, caressing my palm as he steered the car to our house. We were having early rain today, which matched my mood. I can't wait to get underneath the covers and cuddle up in his arms.
"I totally forgot to ask Mom what had caused Hailey to end up like that," I said, realizing how important that detail was to us.
"Someone put something in the drink that came to your table." He turned into our driveway. The garage door automatically opens for the car to park out of the rain. "The piña colada was poisoned."
Hold up, I ordered one, and then Hailey ordered the second. Did he know that? "How many were brought to the table?"
"Only one." He spoke confidently.
"I ordered the first one but Hailey drank mine and ordered a second drink." Hearing all of this reinvigorated my body as I piped up to analyze the situation.
He shook his head to show that wasn't the case. "Only one of those was ordered and delivered to you." He squeezed with much
tenderness. "The drink was meant for you."
"What?" An alarming reality tumbled on me.
