83. That Was Messed Up

83. That Was Messed Up

“That’s what they plan to do,” Remy said. “And that’s all I know.”

Never in a million years did I imagine that as soon as we got back, there would be two unassuming members of my pack getting treated at the clinic. Instead of having them sleep in the packhouse or the gymnasium, Reiss had them transferred to one of his guestrooms.

Peter had his leg treated and he laid on the bed, knocked out as if he went through more than Remy told us. Remy, on the other hand, sat at the foot of the bed while the rest of us, including Cerberus, surrounded them.

“I don’t understand.” I shook my head, hand over my mouth. “Why didn’t you tell Alpha Colt instead of coming all the way here?”

“No, our pack was way too far. Not a lot of people know this but we have a cousin living in Endom. He showed us the way. But Roger’s men were still after us. When they jumped us, Peter jumped in front of me. They took his bloody leg! He felt bad about getting us wrapped up with them. We hid for the whole night until we were sure they were gone. If he didn't step in then… that panther…” Remy buried his face in his hands, his shirtless body shivering as he held back his sniffles.

Even after hearing his confession and seeing the end result, I couldn’t find it in me to feel sorry for him. He betrayed us and nearly caused us to go to war with Reiss’ pack. And they would have stayed back and watched as people died if it wasn’t for their conscience biting them in the ass. Not to mention how they partook in framing Summer’s abduction on our families and friends.

I lowered my head and walked out. The door slammed shut behind me.

I could hear Reiss speaking to them but I didn’t listen. I rubbed my arms, stopping in front of the railing to gaze down at the bottom floor. Summer’s mother had come and taken her home. The poor thing was crying so much she could barely get a word out. Wasn’t Emery supposed to be sitting on one of the couches? Where did she go?

“Here.” Two paper towels were thrust into my face. “Carl makes sure to polish the hardwood every weekend. It would pain him to see you tarnish it.”

Emery joined me at the railing, her face turned away. I touched my eyes. I wasn't crying, but there must have been something about my expression that made her think that I would.

I accepted them. “Thank you. Are you okay standing beside me like this?”

“No, that's why I'm so far away. Do you love Reiss or do you see an opportunity to step up in life?”

Something about her question made me chuckle. “I like him a lot. I think I've fallen for him. But it's not like I'm going to drop out of school to be a Luna. I've always had ambitions outside of Reiss, but I'll always ensure to include him in everything. I'm sorry this is how things turned out this way, Emery. I didn't come here with some big bad plan to take over.”

She shrugged, seeming visibly more relaxed. “If you say so. I mean, who am I to tell you that you're lying? Besides, I should say I'm sorry too for siccing Krystal and Berry on you.”

“That was you?!” I pulled back to look at her, then scoffed. “I thought it was just them being bitches. No offence.”

“None taken.”

“No wait, actually, yes offence!” I didn’t know what was with me today. Ever since we found out about Roger Bryce I've found it hard to hold back my thoughts. “You lied to me about my sister being attacked by rogues! Do you know how messed up that is?”

“A little.” She used her thumb and forefinger to demonstrate the amount. “I actually forgot about that. I guess it was kind of messed up.”

“Yeah no shit!” I exclaimed. Emery laughed.

“Yeah. As bad as it was, I don’t think I regret it. For some time now I was always worried that you would ruin everything he and I shared. I guess I was right.”

I ran my fingers through my hair. “I never tried to get with him. I just accepted him like two days ago-”

“I know.” She drew in air through her teeth. “I could see it from the look on his face. He was terrified that you wouldn’t accept him. It hurts to see him that way but serves him right. Who told him it was a good idea to throw away one of his strongest wolves for an uncertain human with no abilities.”

My eye twitched. I laughed.

“Do you wanna go talk it out in the backyard? I’ve tussled with wolves before so I’m sure I can get a few hits in before you eat me alive.”

Emery laughed and waved me off. “Oh please, I have standards regarding who I fight. If you can go head to head with Allister then we can talk.”

“Jeez, you really do want to get rid of me.” I slumped forward. “Have you seen how big Allister is?”

We laughed and continued talking as if it was the easiest thing to do. I should thank her for distracting me. As easy as it was to talk to her, I didn’t see us becoming friends any time soon. I don't think Emery realizes how easy it is for her to pull people in with the aura. If not Reiss, then I hope she meets someone who is just as amazing.

I sat on the bench in the backyard garden just as the sun was descending. The flowers were all in full bloom, the wind carrying their scents to me. While I hummed a soft tune to myself, tapped me on my shoulder.

Cerberus offered me a cup with steaming hot liquid. “It’s ginger tea. Have a sip.”
