Chapter 33 33
Chapter 33 33
VALERIA'S POV
"The palace is under attack," I repeated his words, mostly because it was too sudden for my head to comprehend.
"You need to leave the room right now, you need to go where you are safe!" The maid yelled, holding my hand and dragging me toward the door. We could hear the loud hangings and unmistakable shouting of the crowd from outside.
Even in my panic-stricken state, I could tell leaving the room was probably not the best option so I pulled my hand out of hers. "We should stay in here, that is better than going on," I muttered, my voice carrying too much panic to go any louder.
"Are you sure....they are coming right through this direction. Wouldn't it have been better if you had gone somewhere else? Your highness had made me promise to keep you safe, but staying here doesn't sound like a good option to fulfill that promise."
"I am perfectly capable of keeping myself safe. If you want to step out of the room, be my guest and get it, I would love to close my door." I stood by the door as I waited for her to make her decision. I saw her shoulders slumped and she stood back.
"I thought so," I mumbled under my breath as I put the door under lock and key. Then I began to search around the room for any sort of weapon. There was nothing really, no sword, no blade, nothing. I cursed myself under my breath for deciding to leave Lucius' room to come and stay in mind. He had a collection of swords at every corner of his space. This room could have easily passed for a child's. There was nothing.
"Fucking hell..." I mumbled under my breath as I began to raise the mattress, searching underneath the bed. "There is no form of weapon around here. Not even a damn blade that could be used for self-defence."
"You are pregnant, you are not supposed to make any harsh movements. You shouldn't be looking for blades." She was suddenly beside me, trying to stop me from raising the bed.
"If you do not let go of my hand, I am going to smack you, and believe me that will be heavier than any beating you have received." I threatened.
Hesitantly, she let go of my hand and I continued to search under the bed, hoping that I would find something under it somehow.
With the commotion still raging outside, my search became vigorous, but the more I searched, the more I realized there was really nothing to protect oneself with around here, I am going to have to depend on my mere hand straight if someone were to walk into this room. I could hear Axel in my head nagging about how he always told me to train to use my hands without a weapon. I should have listened. I didn't have time to regret though, as there was a hefty hit on the door, shaking it on its hinges.
The maid turned to me, eyes and mouth agape, as if to say "I told you so." but was too overwhelmed with concern to care abiut anything else.
"What the heck are we supposed to do now?" By the time she ran across the room to where I stood, rooted to my spot in shock, it had become pretty clear that the door wasnt hit by accident and whoever it was was intending to actually open it.
"Shit!" I mumbled and picked the flower vase by the window, emptying its contents and raising the pot in defense.
"No! We have to hide." She tried to jerk the cup out of my hand but I shook her off.
"You think whoever it is that is out there wasting his time to knock off the door will simply turn around if he finally opens the door and finds the room empty?"
"Yes." She shrugged like there was no other way around it.
"He would search around dumbass. And I had rather stand tall and defend myself than hide and end up getting fetched out of a cupboard like a fucking coward." I pulled away from her hold and headed toward the door but she didn't give up, she followed behind me and tried to drag me away from the door again.
"You don't understand. You don't have a choice but to do what I want. His majesty said I should make sure you are safe also, I can't let you face an intruder headfirst, not unless you want my own head to be hanging off my head."
"I thought you said you were a guard?" I asked with disbelief. Aren't guards supposed to be brave?
She nodded. I moved my eyes away from her for a heartbeat as the beating on the door became progressively louder. "And you are not ashamed to retreat from an attack? You are such a disgrace to your kingdom."
"You don't understand, the Alpha said..."
"Fuck you and fuck your fucking Alpha!" I yelled at her at the same time the door was being shoved open. Numerous individuals walked into the room and no one needed to tell me that they weren't here to protect us. The fool crawled to the ground like the pathetic coward she was. While the men approached me, about six of them, each with a sword in his hand.
I raised the pot higher as I took small steps backward. With this pot, I stood no chance. I could only hope I knock one of them down and have enough time to pry his sword from his hand before another attack.
The first one yelled and came for me, I fumbled and stepped back, nearly losing my balance. Just when he raised his sword at me, I searched for his life force, connected it with mine and I was able to feel how his blood moved in his veins.
I visualized myself holding onto his hand and squeezing, the sword fell from his hand before it reached me. I wasnt sure how I was able to do that, but I did. To him and the rest of the men.
And standing right by the door, was Max.
