Chapter 89 ~A gift before goodbye~
(Fiona’s POV)
One… Two… Three
I took in a deep breath, stilling myself as I called the number of my mover. I had to do it now, or else, I just might change my mind.
“Hello, Miss Hepburn?”
“This is she.” My voice croaked. “Is everything in place?”
“Yes.” His voice came out, thick with an Irish accent. “I called the cleaners to tidy up the cottage and your flight to Ontario has been booked.”
“Thank you,” I said simply and cut the call.
Just then, my phone beeped with a text message.
“Hey, Kiddo. Everything is in place. If you still want to change your mind, there's still a little time.”
I stared at the message for so long that it gradually blurred to nothingness.
Did I want to change my mind about leaving? I couldn't answer the question. Of late, the Silvereign Pack has been in chaos. Rumours of me being cursed and wolfless have somehow leaked to the pack, not that I was surprised.
I guess it was expected.
But after yesterday, I wasn't sure what to believe anymore. I was in a trance, and, whether it was real or not, I felt Rhia reach out to me.
Was I wolfless, or was I not?
I texted back.
“No, I don't. Thanks for everything, Dad.”
I pressed send before I could regret it.
I wouldn't be a liability to Xander. I just couldn't.
Tonight was finally prom. And I'd be leaving for Ontario by dawn.
I'd already packed up some of my things. The ones that wouldn't be easily noticed.
The plan was to leave after the Prom king and queen were crowned. I would stay in a hotel till morning and then leave for an early flight.
I had already informed Dr. Mel, and she'd given me medical clearance. She cried, we both did.
But nothing anyone would do could change my mind.
There was a knock on my door and I opened it to see an Omega named Laila.
“Good day, Luna. Beta Yara asked me to get you.”
“Is there a problem?” I asked, confused.
“No, Luna. She said the glam team is here.”
Oh, Yara went as far as hiring a glam team.
“Okay… I'll be there shortly.” I gave her a firm nod.
“I was asked to bring your dress.”
I pointed to the closet, where the elegant crimson dress was hanging, and Laila picked it up and walked out of the room.
With a sigh, I followed. So this was happening.
The team took about two hours to finish with our glam.
The hair stylists were working, as well as the makeup artists.
Afterwards, the fashion stylists dressed us up.
When I looked in the mirror, I could not recognise who was staring back at me.
I looked ethereal.
Yara gasped. “Wow. Fiona…”
I smiled.
“You look so beautiful!” She exclaimed.
“As do you.” She did. She looked stunning in her blue dress, her hair fell in ringlets across her shoulders, and she glowed like gold.
“There's no way you're not winning Prom Queen!” Yara exclaimed.
We were chattering as we stepped onto the stairs to go down.
Xander and Calvin were waiting, ready to go.
“Oh my god!” I gasped softly. Xander was dressed in a Crimson Tuxedo that matched my dress. His hair fell across his face in tight curls, he looked magnificent.
Calvin nudged Xander and he turned to face us. His eyes locked with mine and for a moment, the world stood still.
He gaped, lost for words.
“Aren't you going to help me down?” I said with a sad smile. Sad, because I knew this might just be the last time he would look at me like that. Look at me, at all.
He held out his elbow and I placed my hand on it. “You look stunning, Princess Fiona.”
I felt heat creep up my cheeks. “And you look dashing, as always.”
Yara and Calvin were already on their way, hand-in-hand.
Xander bent down to kiss my lips. He tasted divine, a little sweet and a little minty.
It was a heady feeling. I moaned softly, then quickly pulled away.
“We'll be late.” I laughed softly.
“I have something to show you.” Xander tugged my hand. “It's outside.”
“What's that?” I asked, smiling at him.
“A present,” he said. “My little way of saying thank you.”
He held my hands as he led me past the foyer and down the stairs to the front of the Main house.
Sitting beside the water fountain was a red, glimmering car. I'd never seen anything like it before.
It was beautiful.
I gasped. And a single tear fell from my eyes.
He looked at me, his eyes were gentle and kind. “Now you don't have to call cabs anymore. But you can still be my passenger princess, anytime.”
I swallowed a tight knot in my throat. I blinked quickly. “Xander, I don't want to ruin my makeup.”
He chuckled softly.
A valet came out and pulled away the big ribbon from the car and opened the doors. I was hit by the fresh scent of a new car.
“Thank you.” I looked at Xander. “This is… this is just too much. I don't know if I can take this.”
He looked offended for a split second. “You deserve so much more. You deserve everything in the world.”
My chest was constricting. I just couldn't take it. I felt like a terrible person. I was a terrible person.
Xander's thumb caressed my cheek and wiped away the tears I didn’t know were falling.
My throat was hoarse as I cried.
“Shh.” He shushed me. “Today is a happy day. No tears.”
I nodded. Laughing in between the tears.
On the contrary, today was the saddest day for me.
The Valet brought out a bunch of White Roses and handed them over to me.
My favorites.
I sniffed them. They smelled wonderful.
I saw a handwritten note between the petals.
I exhaled. Goosebumps from the cold evening spread across my arms.
I picked up the letter and read through it.
“Dear Fiona,
The skies aligned. The universe decided. That I would spend eternity with you. You are my life, and my death. I would live for you and yet die for you.
You stepped into my life, and suddenly it all made sense.
I was made to be for you, and you for me.”
This time, I let myself cry, this time, not minding that I'll ruin my makeup.
“I'm not really good with words.” Xander chuckled. “So, dumb or poetic?”
Was he kidding?
I answered with a kiss, my lips pressed against his, with passion, with fire.
Finally, he pulled away briefly.
“It's perfect.” I shuddered.
His eyes were on mine. They looked lit with emotion. “I have never said this before, but I guess today is the day…”
“What?” I asked, softly.
“I've known this ever since the day you bumped into me on NorthVale's ice rink.” His thumb stroked my cheek. “I love you, Fiona Hepburn. I'm madly and utterly in love with you.”
My breath hitched.
No.
Why was he making this so hard for me?
“I…”
I looked away, unable to say the words that burnt my tongue.
I loved him.
But, I would leave him tonight.
