Chapter 41 ~No Tears Left To Cry~
(Fiona's POV)
I couldn't watch them for another minute.
I'd rather die than stand there looking at Xander cheat on me with the same Dakota he assured me was just his ‘childhood friend’.
By the time I got in the car, I was heaving with tears that I tried in vain to control.
My chest was constricting.
“Fiona!” Yara was running out of the car, alarmed. “What happened?”
I coughed, wiping my tears that were falling rapidly. “Yar… let's just- I need to get out of here, please.”
That was all I needed to say, because Yara was already driving out hurriedly.
I looked back to see that Xander was running after the car, but we had already gone far.
I had to follow him from school after I saw the mood he was in; I begged Yara to drive after his car.
In the middle of the journey, we lost track of his car. But, thankfully, Yara suspected where he was driving to. She told me that, and like she warned, it wasn't going to be good.
And she was right. They were at the riverbank where they first met, and the first thing I walked into was both of them kissing.
I sat in the quiet of the car, bawling my eyes out.
Yara kept throwing glances at me, her attention divided between me and the driving, muttering ‘sorry’ with knotted brows.
I didn't know what she was apologising for. She wasn’t responsible for my bad luck in love, was she?
We pulled into Nightfang pack when the sun was going down.
By now, I was numb, maybe because I'd no more tears left to cry.
I almost accidentally bumped into Nova on my way up the stairs.
“Don't make me trip, weirdo!” She spat out. “I can't even get why Dad allowed you creeps into Nightfang.”
I muttered an apology.
She must have noticed I didn't look okay because she eyed me curiously. “And why do you look like that?”
I wanted to say ‘Nothing', but I knew if I opened my mouth, it'd be another round of tears.
Her expression changed instantly. “Xander.”
I turned to go up the stairs, but her words stopped me.
She laughed bitterly. “You know, when Xander mated you, I was not okay. Maybe I went a little crazy.”
I turned.
“I know you were wondering why I've been absent from school. That's the reason.” She had a forlorn look in her eyes. “It was so bad that Dad asked me to move to Nightfang. They feared I'll kill myself.”
I managed to respond. “But you cheated on him.”
“With Xander, it's cheat or be cheated on. Trust me.” This time, she moved closer to me. “I don't like you. Actually, I quite frankly despise you. But for your own good, leave him. He's going to break your heart.”
Somehow, her statement made me all the more upset.
Maybe because I knew that as terrible as she was, she was right.
I'd, after all, seen it happen with my own two eyes.
When I got to my room, Yara and Mirabelle were already there.
“Oh Luna.” Mirabelle embraced me tightly. “Beta Yara told me everything that happened. I'm so sorry.”
That hug was probably everything I needed.
Yara stood up. “So, what's the plan now?”
I shrugged. “I have to leave here. I can't stay anymore.”
Mirabelle gasped. “What! Where are you going?”
“Maybe my parent's, anywhere honestly.”
Yara opened her mouth. I knew she wanted to discourage me.
‘Don't. I've made up my mind.’ I mindlinked.
“I'll help you pack.” The corners of her lips twitched sadly.
My door opened just when we finished parking.
“Fiona!” Xander barged in, looking alarmed.
Yara and Mirabelle excused themselves out of the room.
“I'm sorry.” He moved closer to me.
“Stay the fuck away from me, Xander.” I wore a fake confident expression, willing myself not to break.
“I swear, it wasn't what it looked like, princess.” He begged. “Dakota kissed me first.”
First?
“You must think I'm dumb.” I laughed sadly. “Don't act like you don't have a will. You're a fucking adult! If you didn't want it, you could have said no. But you did.”
I knew what I saw.
“I should've known better. It's fine.” I was talking more to myself than to him.
“Maybe I subconsciously allowed it. But I'd never do anything to intentionally hurt you.”
I scoffed. “It's too late for that, Xander.”
He must have only just noticed the boxes surrounding me, because he looked wounded. “Where are you going to by this time, Fiona?”
I looked out the window. It was nightfall.
But the gods forbid me from staying here any longer.
“Far away from you, Xander.” I strolled the boxes. “You and Dakota have all the time you need now.”
“Fiona.”
“Afterall, everything was just a game to you. Contractual.”
I walked away, and he didn't follow me.
—-
It was only after I reached the gate of Nightfang that I realised I didn't have much of a plan.
And I was alone in the darkness.
On a full moon.
“Need a ride?”
I turned at the unfamiliar voice.
Jackson. Nova's brother.
“Um…”
He came out and helped me with my luggages to the trunk.
“There we go.” He smiled.
I was so grateful that I didn't know what to say, so I sat quietly as he drove while I pointed in the direction.
I noticed he kept a box of tissue on the dashboard for me.
I finally turned to speak to him. “How did you know I needed a ride?”
He laughed coarsely. “There're wolves everywhere. Of course we heard everything.”
I buried my head in my palms.
Just great! They heard everything. But if everything went according to my plans, then I'd likely never see them again.
I heaved a sigh of relief when I saw my family home come into view.
Somehow, I was uncomfortable with Jackson driving all the way in. He was, afterall a stranger.
“You can stop me here.” I tapped him lightly.
“Oh. I thought it's still ahead.”
“Here is fine.”
I stepped down and retrieved my luggage from the car trunk. “Thank you for the ride. Seriously, you saved my ass.”
He nodded. “That's fine. Just stay safe and lock your doors. Today is a full moon and from what I hear, you can't shift yet.”
Yet…
I nodded, watching his car pull away from the intersection into the dark of the night.
I rode my box towards my parent's house.
Alone now, the reality of my breakup came down on me.
I wept.
There was a slight rustle of leaves in the distance.
I turned to see flashing red eyes.
Beckett's eyes.
He was alongside two other wolves. From their scent, Isis and Otto.
I froze as they approached me.
Beckett pounced on me in a flash and I landed on the ground, crashing my head against a stone.
I smelt blood and felt my eyes go dizzy.
Before everywhere went blank, there was only one name in my mind.
Rhia’s mindlink came with urgency. ‘Theon!’
