Chapter 53: Too Late
Chapter 53: Too Late
Josh looked at Dan for a long moment after the door closed behind Reta.
The study was very quiet. The kind of quiet that had weight to it.
"I want everything documented," Josh said. "Every raid connected to the Shademaster operation. Every cart. Every route. Every name that appears more than once in any of the survivor accounts." He leaned back in his chair. "I want it so thorough that when I move there is nothing left to argue with."
Dan nodded, already writing. "And in the meantime?"
"Nothing changes," Josh said. "Nobody in this palace adjusts their behaviour. Nobody looks at him differently. Nobody says a word." He was quiet for a moment. "Everything looks exactly as it did yesterday."
Dan looked up. "And Olivia?"
Josh glanced at her.
She was sitting very still across from him with her hands folded.
"You can go," he said to her quietly. "Thank you for telling me."
Olivia stood. She gave a small bow and left without a word.
Josh watched the door close behind her.
Then he turned back to Dan.
"Start tonight," he said.

Harris was coming down the east corridor when he saw her.
Olivia was walking with her head slightly down and her pace slightly faster than usual. Not running. Just moving with the particular efficiency of someone who wanted to get from one place to another without being stopped.
He fell into step beside her anyway.
"How are you finding the morning?" he asked pleasantly.
"Fine, my Lord," Olivia said. "Just busy."
"You look tired."
"The journey yesterday was long."
"Mmhm." Harris walked beside her for a few steps. "Has something happened?"
Olivia kept walking. "Nothing, my Lord. Everything is fine."
He looked at her from the side. That long, careful look. She felt it the way she always felt it, like being read by someone who was very good at reading and was trying not to show it.
"You are sure," he said.
"Completely, my Lord."
He studied her face for just a moment longer.
Then he smiled pleasantly and peeled away toward the northern corridor.
Olivia kept walking.
She did not let out her breath until she had turned the corner.

Harris sat in his chambers and thought.
He was good at thinking. He had spent his entire adult life making decisions in complicated situations with incomplete information and he had survived every one of them by thinking clearly and quickly and without sentiment getting in the way.
He tried to do that now.
Something had shifted in the palace. It was not visible. It was not anything he could point to directly. It was the particular atmospheric change that happened when a secret moved from one pair of hands to another. He had caused that change enough times in his life to recognise it from the inside.
The survivors.
They had arrived three days early. Josh had met with them last night. This morning Josh was quieter than usual and Olivia was pale and walking fast and not meeting eyes.
He pressed his hands together and stared at the wall.
He did not know exactly what the survivors had said. He did not know how much they knew or how specifically they knew it. What he did know was that Drake's shutdowns were still in progress and if anything was still moving when Josh's men started pulling on threads the whole thing would unravel faster than he could manage.
He went to his desk.
He pulled out a clean sheet of paper.
He wrote four words.
Accelerate the shutdown. All territories.
He folded it, sealed it, and called for his private messenger.
"Find Drake," he said. "Tonight."
The messenger left.
Harris sat back and looked at the ceiling.
He had time. He told himself that. The documentation of something this large took weeks. Josh was thorough and careful and would not move without airtight evidence. That bought Harris time to dismantle enough of the operation that when the investigation arrived there would be significantly less to find.
He was still telling himself this when the reply came back.
Less than an hour. The messenger returned with a folded note and the expression of someone who had delivered it quickly because something in Drake's manner had suggested speed was important.
Harris opened it.
Four lines. Drake never wasted words.
The shutdown is already underway as ordered. However you should know, the Alpha's men have been in the outer settlements for two days. They have been speaking to contacts in the Yesmar region. They are not investigating the raids generally.
They are investigating you specifically, my Lord.
They have names. They have routes. They have cart records.
It is too late.
Harris read it twice.
He set it down on the desk.
He sat very still.
Outside his window the palace went about its afternoon. He could hear the distant sound of the kitchens, horses in the courtyard, someone laughing near the east garden.
Ordinary sounds. Ordinary life.
He looked at Drake's four lines again.
It is too late.
He had spent years building something efficient and terrible and telling himself the distance between himself and the consequences meant something. That he was different from the men who carried out his orders because he never had to watch.
He watched now. In his mind. The carts. The women. The Moon Shadow Pack. The night he had ordered without attending. The raid that had taken Olivia's parents and put Olivia herself in a cart on a bad road where a rotten latch had been the only thing standing between her and Silverline.
He pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes.
Then he stood up.
He straightened his coat.
He walked to the door and opened it and stepped into the corridor.
He was going to find Josh.
Not because there was anything left to protect. Not because he had a strategy. Not because he had calculated the odds and decided this was the best remaining move.
He was going to find Josh because Josh was the only person left who deserved to hear it from him directly rather than from a piece of paper on a desk.
He owed him that much.
He owed Olivia considerably more.
