Glutton

Glutton
Vinorca Jona POV

"Who wouldn't want such a beautiful girlfriend? But for now, it's not," Masen said, very politely, which was beyond my expectations.

Him saying anyone would want me was such a lie, because even though Dante claimed I was his mate, he never wanted me, and even yesterday he proved it. Somehow I had two wolves, though neither had ever come out, spoken, or taken wolf form.

I went into heat, but had no contact with any wolf, and Dante hadn't done a thing either, though I used to think he'd do it the moment he got the chance.

My heart pinched a little, making it hard to maintain the smile on my face.

"You don't have a mate, right? So you're still waiting for yours?" Another lady's question pulled my attention fully onto Masen, away from my own thoughts. This one was interesting. Why was he such a flirt when he should be waiting for his mate? Was he like that with everyone?

It killed every pleasant feeling I'd had.

"I got rejected by my mate, so I don't think I need to wait for it." Did I hear that right? How is he so calm about it?

Why did the Moon Goddess bother creating this soulmate nonsense when no one cared? Dante was a complete arsehole, and Masen had been rejected by his own mate, if his words were true. But then again, no man's word could really be trusted.

I hoped I was good at judging character, because everything about this was making me uncomfortable. Still, I couldn't judge someone who hadn't once done anything wrong. He'd even helped me when anyone else would have taken advantage.

"Sir, your order is here." Before anyone at the table could press the matter further, two waiters arrived with our orders and set our plates in front of us. "Please enjoy," they said, and bowed before leaving.

I was glad, at least, that no more interrogation was coming. Even though I wanted answers myself, it felt disrespectful to hash it all out in front of so many people.

"Have your food, Vinorca," Masen murmured, nudging me. "If you're feeling uncomfortable, we can change tables," he whispered.

How attentive of him. It should've been him feeling uncomfortable, since strangers were prying into his life, not mine.

I couldn't even think about it. If people tried to dig up what was happening with mine, buckets of vomit would be my only option.

"You should eat something too. I don't think drinking on an empty stomach would be any good," I pointed out.

"Seems like a valid reason."

I took a bite of my steak, and it melted in my mouth. "Mmm."

"Is it that delicious?" He took a bite of his own appetizer, which looked delicious too, though not as much as mine.

It hit me. I'd moaned out loud at how delicious the meal was. "I'm sorry." I glanced around, hoping I hadn't been loud enough to embarrass us both.

"Why are you apologizing?" His eyebrows knitted. I could see people around the table giving us side-eyes.

Shit. Seems like they'd heard me. "Nothing, I was just too loud while eating," I muttered, whimpering with discomfort, knowing I couldn't exactly say I'd fucking moaned.

"That shows how much you appreciate the taste. Nothing to be sorry about."

Okay, perfect person. My mistake for doubting you.

No words for how many more punches of perfection he was going to hit me with.

"Everyone is looking at us." Heat crept up the back of my neck. Whatever this was, it looked no less than a couple's exchange, even with how quietly we were speaking to each other.

This denial was a river in Egypt, and somehow I was getting swept away in it. Because even with Lewis, I'd never felt this kind of comfort.

"Not an issue."

Everything about him was beyond anything I could explain, and I needed to dig deeper to figure out what was really happening.

"You two look like such a great pair," the man beside Masen said. "Seems like a young couple."

"Hahah," Masen laughed a little. "Have to take all the compliments. Nothing wrong with that."

I turned my focus back to my food, grabbing some fries and a bite of my burger, avoiding everything else. Masen picked the conversation back up, and everyone else fell into their own talk and drinks again.

Leaving me alone to enjoy my food in peace, heaven on a plate.

I didn't know how long it had been, but by the time I looked up, my plate was licked clean and my soft drink had melted down to ice. My stomach was overly full, though my heart still wanted more.

A full stomach, filled with food like that, a delight to live with.

"Want to go for a walk?" Masen tilted his head slightly. His drink and food were finished too, and it seemed like his business talk was wrapping up as well.

Good idea. "Yes, please, if it's not too big of an issue. I'm too full, a walk will help."

"I have some other people to meet. We had fun talking with you all." Masen pushed his chair back and stood, holding his hand out. I took it and stood too.

"Sure, hope the lady enjoyed her meal. She didn't have much conversation at all."

The words felt like a little dig, maybe calling me a glutton. "I really enjoyed myself. I'm just not a talkative person, usually." I had to stand up for myself. I did have some guts, occasionally. I couldn't let myself be looked down on too much.

Not a lie. I did talk, just not to random people. Besides, what did I have in common with anyone here? They were all dripping in riches, and my poor self had nothing to start a conversation with.

What was I even going to talk about? How poor am I? Seemed like rubbish.

"She's a reserved person. We really had a great time," Masen added. "Excuse us."
