That voice

Rylan’s POV

I felt the weight of his words crash over me like a wave. Grayson and Lila—a bond forged in the fires of loyalty and love. It made sense, but we now didn't have time to unpack that realisation. Not when danger lurked beyond the door, and chaos threatened to engulf us.

“Grayson, please!” I urged desperation creeping into my voice. “We can’t just leave you to fight alone!”

Enzo stepped forward, determination etched across his face. “You’re outnumbered, Grayson! We’re stronger together. We can figure this out!”

The door shuddered again, and approaching footsteps pounded against my ears. Grayson’s eyes locked onto mine, fierce and resolute. “There’s no time! Get Lila out of here. I’ll buy you some time—go!”

I hesitated, torn between my instincts to protect my pack and the agonising urgency of Lila’s situation. “Grayson, I—”

“Stop! We don’t have the luxury of debate,” he snapped, his voice cutting through my tumultuous thoughts. “You have to trust me. The moment those chains are off, she’ll need you. Go. Now!”

With that, he turned, facing the door as the sound of gears and heavy footsteps drew nearer. I felt an icy chill wrap around my heart, but I had no choice. I nodded, swallowing my fear and angst as I turned back to Lila.

“Hang on, I’m going to get these off,” I promised, desperation fueling my movements. I pulled and yanked at the chains, desperately searching for a weak link, something to give. I felt Lila’s eyes on me, her breath quick and shallow, urging me forward.

“Rylan, you have to hurry!” she gasped, pain radiating from her wrists. “Please—"

“What the hell are you doing?” Enzo urged, glancing back at the door nervously. “We don’t have time!”

“I know!” I shouted, my panic rising as the door rattled violently against Grayson’s strength. “Just give me a second!”

The growing intensity of the hum around us surged, almost drowning out the chaos outside. My fingers moved wildly, and I finally felt the slightest give. “I think I have it!” I cried out, pulling with all my might.

With a final wrench, the chains broke free, clattering to the ground. Lila gasped as I withdrew her arms from their restraints, her face contorting in pain but also relief. “I…I can feel my strength returning.”

“Lila, can you stand?” Daniella asked, already moving closer to help support her.

“Yeah… just give me a moment.” She took a deep breath, focusing her energy before looking at me squarely. “I’m ready; let’s go!”

Before we could move, the door burst open, and the heavy footsteps that seemed to haunt us finally revealed themselves. Shadowy figures rushed through, their eyes gleaming maliciously, reflecting the flickering light on the walls.

“Get out of here!” Grayson shouted as he flung himself at the nearest intruder, his fists connecting with a crack that echoed through the chamber.

“Go!” I yelled, shoving Lila toward the corridor. “Now!”

At that moment, the weight of my duty as protector surged within me. I couldn’t leave Grayson. A part of me screamed to rush back, fight alongside him, and face whatever awaited us together, but the rational side knew this wasn’t a fight we could win if we stayed.

“Rylan!” Daniella shouted, pulling me closer to the doorway.

“Go!” Grayson shouted again, his form a whirlwind of movement and defiance. “Get to safety!”

I hesitated, heart pounding in my chest. “Grayson, please—”

“Now!” His voice pierced through the chaos with a clarity that shattered my hesitation.

And then, against the evident turmoil before us, I turned. I forced myself to move, to protect the ones left standing, knowing that I had to trust Grayson to hold the line.

Daniella helped guide Lila as she staggered forward, the three of us sprinting down the corridor. The air was thick with the sound of muffled chaos behind us—the clash of bodies, the shouts, the uneven breaths of warriors fighting for their pack.

Explosions of noise erupted like thunder as Lila struggled to regain her balance. “We have to find them,” she gasped, glancing back, worry creasing her features.

“We will,” I promised, even as the reality gnawed at me. “We’ll find everyone.”

But the hum intensified, the walls pulsating with a dark energy that felt almost alive, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that time was running out.

“Rylan!” Enzo called, his eyes wide. “Which way?”

“Right! Let’s take the next door!” The urgency of my voice masked the rising dread twisting in my gut.

We pushed through another door, entering a spacious room filled with shadows. I flicked on a weak flashlight in my pocket, illuminating the vacant area before us. My heart sank further as I took in the remnants of what had once been a sanctuary for our pack—broken furniture shattered remnants of our home, and an ominous stillness that threatened to choke us.

“What happened here?” Daniella whispered, her voice tense with disbelief.

I shook my head, unable to voice my horror. “This isn’t good.”

Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the corridor, and my blood ran cold. “Quick! We need to hide!”

Through instinct, I shoved everyone into a nearby closet, my heart racing, breaths mingling, and fear coursing between us like electric currents. The sharpness of the noises grew closer, pulsating with a discordant rhythm that felt like a countdown.

“Please,” Lila murmured, pressing against the wall. “I can sense them—whatever is coming… they’re here.”

“Shh!” I hissed, barely able to breathe myself.

In the oppressive silence, we listened as the footsteps passed, and I strained to hear hushed voices.

“Search everything,” a commanding voice growled, chilling me. “They can’t hide for long.”

That voice. It was so familiar, but yet it couldn't be.
