Chapter 175: Neighbor - Mixed POV
The visitor arrives on a Tuesday.
Not through the door. Not through the tree. Through... the space in between.
A ripple in the air. A fold, like the Folded but different. More solid. More lasting.
She steps through.
Human height. Human shape. But her skin changes color—silver, gold, deep red, green—like a chameleon responding to feelings.
"Hello," she says. Her voice sounds like wind chimes.
"Hello," we answer.
The twins step forward. Adrian, twenty-five. Ophelia, twenty-five. They're still holding hands.
"We've been expecting you," Ophelia says.
"We've been waiting," Adrian adds.
The visitor smiles. Her skin settles into a soft, warm glow—like sunrise.
"I'm from... somewhere else," she says. "A place beyond your worlds. Beyond your door. Beyond your tree."
"Why are you here?" Kael asks.
"To invite you," she says. "Your world... your bridge... has been noticed. By others. By many."
"They want to learn from you. How to build connections. How to love... imperfectly."
"How to be... real."
Leah looks at me. I look at her.
"We're not teachers," she says.
"You're the only teachers," the visitor replies. "Because you've done it. Not perfectly. Not completely. But enough."
The twins look at each other. That look—shared thoughts, shared understanding, shared love.
"We'll go," they say together.
"Not alone," I add.
"Together," Leah finishes.
So we get ready. Not for war. For a journey. To share what we've learned. To teach what we know.
Pancakes.
Lullabies.
Love.
On the day we leave, the whole city gathers. Xiao Qi organizes everything. Xiao Ba writes a goodbye song. Kiran and Avi hold their children. Dr. Chen 2.0 brings Imperfect flowers.
We stand before the door. The dark-silver gate where it all started.
"Ready?" I ask.
"Ready," they answer.
We step through.
Not leaving. Just... reaching further.
The bridge grows.
The connection deepens.
The love spreads.
And somewhere, in the space between worlds, in the gap between breaths, a new song begins.
Our song.
Imperfect.
But real.
Forever.
