Chapter 171: Eternal Rest - Leah
We bury Adrian de Noct under the tree.
Not a grave. A resting place. The first Gatekeeper's consciousness merges with Kael, but his body—woven from dark-silver light—remains. We place it among the tree's roots, where the soil from three worlds mingles together.
"He's sleeping," Kael says. "Not dead. Just... resting. Until he's needed."
"Will he be needed?"
"Always," Kael says. "Behind every Gatekeeper... he's there."
The ceremony is simple. We gather—family, refugees, green visitors. Xiao Qi and Xiao Ba stand on my left. Kiran and Avi on my right. The twins hold our hands, no longer divine but still special.
We sing the lullaby. Not just us. Everyone. The tree's leaves rustle along with the rhythm. The door hums in harmony.
When we finish, the tree's roots glow with dark-silver light. Then fade.
"Goodbye," Kael says. "Not farewell. Just... see you later."
We go back to the castle.
Life goes on. Not the same. Different. Kael has changed—ancient and young at the same time. Sometimes he speaks with De Noct's voice, sometimes with his own. The Perfect Him has merged too, no longer separate.
But when he looks at me, it's still Kael. Still my husband. Still the man who taught me to fly.
The twins grow up. Normal childhood now—scraped knees, bedtime stories, fights between siblings. Adrian keeps taking things apart. Ophelia keeps drawing on walls. We scold them. We hug them. We love them.
Dr. Chen 2.0 works in the gardens. He has become... gentle. The Forge remnants inside him, calmed by the twins' song, have turned into something like... compassion.
The refugees build homes. Not temporary shelters. Real houses. Streets. A village. Then a town.
The green visitors bring trade. C-side technology mixed with Side A magic mixed with Side B engineering. New inventions. New art. New music.
We name the town.
"Bridge," Kael suggests.
"Imperfect," I add.
"Bridge Imperfect," Ophelia says.
"Bridge Imperfect," Adrian agrees.
The name sticks.
On the first anniversary of the battle, we hold a festival. Music, food, games. Xiao Ba performs her songs. Kiran shows off his sword-dance. Avi heals the sick. Dr. Chen 2.0 grows the biggest pumpkin anyone has ever seen.
At night, we gather under the tree. The door glows above us, clean and strong. The moons rise—Side A's silver moon and Side B's pale one, both visible through the bridge.
Kael holds me. The twins lean against us. Xiao Qi and Xiao Ba sit nearby, sharing a blanket. Kiran and Avi hold hands—still awkward, but trying.
"Happy?" Kael asks.
"Happy."
"Imperfect?"
"Perfect."
He smiles. That ancient, young, beautiful smile.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
The lullaby starts. Not from us. From the tree. From the door. From the wind.
Sleep, sleep, my little baby...
Moon is shining, stars are keeping you company...
Wind stops, rain rests, the world quiets...
Mommy is here, daddy is here, no one is leaving...
We sing along. All of us. The family. The town. The worlds.
And in the distance, beyond the door, beyond the stars, something moves.
Not a threat. A visitor.
Coming slowly. Carefully.
With a gift.
For the future.
Our future.
Imperfect.
But real.
Forever.
