Chapter 148: The Attack - Kael
They arrive on the thirty-second day.
Harvesters—pure energy beings, drawn by the twins' unique signature. They're not from the Forge. Not White Box's soldiers. Something older. Something that existed before the worlds split apart, sleeping until the balance tipped.
They come from the sky. Twelve points of golden light, falling toward the castle like shooting stars.
"Shields up!" Kiran shouts.
The crystal barrier flares to life. The golden lights hit it, and the impact shakes the entire castle. Stone cracks. Windows explode.
Leah grabs the twins. I grab my sword—the Kin-Slaying Blade, still humming with power.
Xiao Qi appears at the door, gun drawn. "They're not solid," she reports. "Energy readings are off the charts."
"What do they want?"
"The twins. Their combined bloodline is... calling out. Across dimensions."
The golden lights take human shape outside the shields. Blank faces turn toward the castle. One raises an arm, and a beam of pure golden energy hits the barrier.
The shields hold—but crack.
"They'll get through," Kiran yells. "Three more hits, maybe four."
I look at Leah. She looks at the twins, then at me.
"The lullaby," she says.
I get it right away.
We gather in the nursery. The twins lie between us. Outside, the shields take another hit, the crystal barrier screaming under the strain.
Kiran and Xiao Qi hold the line. Avi preps emergency transport. Xiao Ba guards the door.
Leah takes my hand. We start to sing.
"Sleep, sleep, my little baby..."
The twins react instantly. Adrian's shadows grow deeper. Ophelia's light grows brighter. And where they meet—
Perfect balance.
The song echoes through the Bloodbond, through the door in the sky, through the very wall between worlds. It reaches the golden figures outside.
They stop.
"Moon is shining, stars are keeping you company..."
The golden lights flicker. Not in attack, but in... understanding.
"Wind stops, rain rests, the world quiets..."
One of the figures lowers its arm. Turns to the others. They communicate in sounds beyond human hearing.
"Mommy is here, daddy is here, no one is leaving..."
The song builds. The twins join in—not with words, but with their own energy. Adrian's shadow-pulse. Ophelia's light-pulse. Weaving into the melody.
The golden figures step back.
Then—
They bow.
Not in defeat. In respect.
The lead figure raises a hand, and a single pulse of golden light shoots up—not at us, but away. A signal. A message.
Then they fade. Back into light. Back into the sky.
Gone.
The castle goes quiet. The shields repair themselves, crystal barrier sealing shut.
I look at Leah. She looks at me.
"What just happened?" she asks.
I look at the twins. Adrian yawns. Ophelia giggles.
"They recognized us," I say. "Not as enemies. As... parents. As a family."
The song worked.
Not as a weapon. As a welcome.
The twins' combined bloodline—shadow and light, Gatekeeper and Primogenitor—has sent a message across dimensions.
We're not a threat to destroy.
We're a bridge to cross.
And the universe, it seems, is paying attention.
