Chapter 146: Birth - Mixed POV
The contractions begin at midnight.
Leah feels the first one—a tightening sensation, not painful yet, but demanding attention. She grabs the sheets, her wings spreading on their own, silver light flooding the room like an alarm signal.
Kael is at her side immediately. Through the blood bond, he feels it too—not the pain itself, but the pressure, the biological drive, the ancient mechanism of birth kicking into gear.
"Avi!" he shouts.
The golden-eyed healer is already at the door, medical bag in hand. She's been waiting for this moment. Preparing for months.
"Xiao Qi, clear the room. Kiran, shields at full power."
They move like a well-rehearsed team. Months of preparation turning into action. Xiao Qi guides the refugees away from the birthing chamber. Kiran activates the crystal grid, creating a dome of shimmering light around the castle's east wing.
Leah focuses on her breathing. In. Out. The contractions grow stronger. Each wave brings not just physical pressure but magical force—the twins' bloodlines resonating, harmonizing, creating an energy field that makes the air itself ripple.
"The first one is coming," Avi says, checking. "Push when I tell you."
Leah pushes.
The sound that fills the room is not human. It's the scream of a Primogenitor giving birth, silver light bursting from her mouth, her eyes, her wings. The castle walls shake. The door in the sky pulses in response.
And then—
A cry.
Not a human cry. Something more. A sound that matches the door's frequency, that makes the crystal shields ring.
Adrian.
He comes into Kael's waiting hands, dark red wings unfolding immediately, covered in birth fluid that turns to shadow and disappears. His eyes—ice-blue vertical slits—lock onto his father's face with an intensity that is both ancient and newborn.
"Adrian," Kael whispers.
The boy grabs his father's finger. His grip is strong. Impossibly strong.
But there's no time to take it in.
"The second one!" Avi calls out.
Leah pushes again, exhausted, bleeding silver, her wings fading. Kael sends energy through the blood bond—his own life force, draining himself to keep her going.
Another cry. Different. Higher. Golden.
Ophelia.
She emerges silver, her wings catching light and breaking it into rainbows. Her eyes are golden vertical slits, like the evolved Night Walkers, but softer. Gentler.
She looks at her mother. And smiles.
Leah falls back, gasping, silver blood pooling beneath her. Avi works fast—stitching, healing, stabilizing. Kael holds Adrian in one arm, pressing his other hand against Leah's wound, pouring everything he has into her.
The twins lie between them.
Adrian and Ophelia.
Dark and light.
They reach for each other across the small space, fingers touching. When they connect, the energy field around them surges, and the door in the sky—
Sings.
A new song. Not the lullaby. Something else. A melody of wholeness. Of balance.
Xiao Qi bursts through the door, Xiao Ba behind her.
"The Forge fragment," she gasps. "It's reacting. It's—"
She stops.
Because the twins, still holding hands, turn their heads toward Xiao Ba.
And the fragment in her chest—the last piece of the Forge, quiet for months—
Goes silent.
Not dead. Not destroyed.
Calmed.
"They quieted it," Xiao Ba whispers. "Just by looking at it."
Adrian gurgles.
Ophelia coos.
And in the space between them, shadow and light find balance.
The room fills with a soft, warm glow. Not silver. Not dark red. Something in between.
Something new.
Kael looks at Leah. She looks back.
Exhausted. Bleeding. Alive.
And together, they look at their children.
Adrian and Ophelia.
The bridge between worlds.
Born.
