Chapter Ninety-Six – The Bond Deepens
It had snowed again the night before.
Just a light dusting—enough to quiet the forest floor and turn the trees into pale silhouettes under the moonlight. I woke to find Kade already dressed, his boots laced, his cloak pulled tight.
“Come with me,” he said softly, holding out his hand.
I didn’t ask where.
I didn’t need to.
There was something in his voice—something still and sacred—that made my heart flutter the way it did the first time he touched me without fear.
We didn’t speak as we walked.
The air was crisp and clear, each breath blooming in soft clouds around us. Finn was still asleep back at the cottage, curled beneath a mound of quilts, unaware of the weight this moment carried.
Kade led me deeper into the woods, to the place where we first kissed—where everything began not with a vow, but with a choice.
It wasn’t far.
Just past the frost-stained birch trees, into the clearing where the sun always seemed to arrive first.
The snow here hadn’t been touched.
He stopped in the center, turned to face me, and reached inside his cloak.
When his hand emerged, he was holding a bundle of dark leather, carefully unwrapped to reveal two bands—twin rings of brushed silver, etched with the faint, winding symbol of our bond.
I froze.
“Is this…?”
Kade’s voice was low, steady. “You asked me once what it meant to choose peace. I didn’t know then. I only knew I wanted to try.”
He stepped closer, the silver glinting in his palm.
“I want to do more than try,” he whispered. “I want to choose you again. Not because of the mate bond. Not because fate said so. But because I say so.”
My heart beat so loud I could barely hear the wind.
“You don’t have to say anything,” he added quickly. “I just thought… maybe we could make it real. In our own way. No titles. No tradition. Just us.”
My throat felt too tight for words.
So instead, I reached for him.
Took the ring from his hand.
And slid it onto his finger with trembling grace.
His eyes didn’t leave mine.
When he took my hand, his touch was reverent.
He knelt in the snow—not in submission, but in devotion.
And whispered, “Lyra, my heart. My flame. My strength. I am yours.”
He kissed my palm.
Then stood.
And waited.
I placed his ring on my own finger.
The metal was cool, but my skin warmed instantly against it.
“Kade,” I said softly, “my shelter. My storm. My soul. I am yours.”
His breath hitched.
Then he pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my neck.
The bond snapped into place all over again.
Stronger. Wilder. Not new—but renewed.
Not bound by blood or fate.
But by choice.
His lips found mine in the hush of that forest.
No words.
Just heat. Breath. Promise.
I let him kiss me until I forgot where the world ended and we began.
Until nothing else existed but the echo of our names against the snow-covered trees.
Later, as we sat wrapped in his cloak beneath a tree, his fingers brushing soft circles over the back of my hand, I whispered, “This was perfect.”
He smiled. “It’s always been perfect with you.”
“We never needed witnesses.”
He shook his head. “This was never about anyone else.”
Just us.
Choosing each other.
Not once.
But forever.
And as the sun broke through the trees above us, scattering golden light over the snow, I leaned into his warmth and thought—
This is the kind of love that grows roots even in winter.
And it would never stop blooming.
