Chapter Thirty-Four: The Hunter and the Hunted
Sophie's POV
Victoria looked like a mess.
That was my first thought when I finally saw her that afternoon. I mean she was still the most put-together person I knew, but something was definitely off. Her signature radiance had dimmed, the dark circles under her eyes barely hidden by the foundation. Her lips, usually a perfect scarlet, seemed paler today, and even though she was dressed impeccably and kept the good posture, exhaustion lingered in the corners of her mouth.
"Are you okay? What happened to you?" I blurted out, genuinely concerned.
A ghost of her usual smile flickered across her face. "Just a rough night, darling." She smoothed an invisible wrinkle from her silk blouse. "I'm fine."
Like hell she was fine. But before I could press further, she was already moving toward the walk-in closet in the room.
"Now then," she called over her shoulder, "Let's get you ready for tonight's hunt."
This massive closet felt like stepping into a high-end boutique, racks of clothing stretching into the depths of the room. "I thought we already picked out-"
"That sad little cocktail dress?" Victoria's laugh held an edge I'd never heard before. "No, no. This requires something... special."
She bypassed all the formal gowns I'd come to expect, and finally pulled out something that made my breath catch. The neckline plunged way past my sternum, both sides were completely cut away from under my breasts to my hips, leaving my entire waist exposed. The back - or what little there was of it - dipped all the way down to just above my ass, held together by delicate straps.
The black material was covered in feathers that got gradually larger from top to bottom, each one hand-stitched and layered to create texture. Silver beadings shined between the feathers, not in any particular pattern but scattered like stars. The skirt hugged my hips before falling straight to the floor, with a slit that would reach the very top of my thigh - one wrong move and I'd be giving everyone a free show.
"Goddess, I can't wear that!" I protested, but my fingers already reached out to touch it.
"Can't?" Victoria's smile turned knowing. "Or afraid to? Actually there's hidden support built in - you won't flash anyone unless you want to."
My mouth went dry. "That's... too much."
"That's the point, darling." Victoria's fingers traced my face. "Tonight isn't only about being pretty. It's about power."
Getting into the dress was a whole production. Victoria had to help me step into it, adjusting each strap and hidden support to ensure nothing would slip out of place no matter how much I moved. When I shifted my weight, the slit parted to reveal almost my entire leg which make me nervous.
"Stop fidgeting," Victoria commanded, making minute adjustments to how the neckline sat. "This dress requires confidence. Own the fact that every eye will be on you tonight."
She wasn't wrong. The mirror showed someone I was entirely surprised again. The deep V cut so low it would draw attention straight to my cleavage, while the side cutouts showed how tiny my waist look. Dark, heavy smoky eyeshadow dominated my lids, with silver glitter scattered across them. She drew my black eyeliner winged up dramatically, sharp enough to cut, making my gaze almost look dangerous. She finished it all with blood-red lips that practically screamed "Bite me if you dare."
"There." Victoria's satisfaction was evident. "Now you look like a proper queen. "
Queen. The word echoed in my head, stirring something dark and hungry that I kept buried for a while. I stared at my reflection, remembering that night in the basement. Remembering how Marcus had commanded those women, how they'd writhed and begged under his control.
But now... now I could imagine something different. Instead of Marcus wielding that whip, I saw myself perched on a throne, watching him kneel before me. That arrogant mouth finally silenced as I gripped his hair, guiding his head between my thighs. Making him use that wicked tongue for my pleasure while his own cock strained against his pants, desperate for relief I wouldn't grant yet.
"My my," Victoria's knowing voice snapped me back to reality. "Those are some interesting thoughts making you blush."
"Just... adjusting to the new look," I managed, but Victoria's raised eyebrow said she wasn't buying it.
"It's intoxicating, isn't it?" She said softly, adjusting a strand of my hair. "The moment you realize you could own them all, make them beg for just a glance."
I wanted to deny it, but increasingly explicit images wouldn't leave my mind - Marcus looking up at me with desperate eyes as I rode his face, his hands bound behind his back so I controlled every touch. The Alpha reduced to whimpering against my clit as I used him for my pleasure...
Fuck. The image sent a rush of heat straight to my core.
"He'd kill me for even thinking about it," I muttered, more to myself than Victoria.
"Would he?" She mused, and then she changed the tone. "Anyway, time to make an entrance."
The walk downstairs felt electric. Adam noticed me first. His usual smirk faltered as his eyes traveled up my body, lingering on places that the dress revealed. For once, he seemed genuinely speechless.
But it was Marcus's reaction I really wanted to see.
He stood at the bottom of the stairs, radiating that effortless authority that usually made me want to run. When his eyes found me though, something fascinating happened - that impenetrable mask cracked. Just for a second, but long enough to see raw hunger flash across his face before he locked it down.
Then his expression hardened into something unreadable. "We're going to be late."
The words came out rougher than usual, and I couldn't help the little thrill of satisfaction. Had I actually managed to crack that perfect control, even for a moment?
Let him look. Let him remember the moment his perfect little captive decided to become the hunter instead of the hunted.
