Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Beast's Tenderness
Sophie's POV
I spent several sleepless nights jumping at every footstep in the hallway, expecting Marcus to burst in and drag me back to that basement. But the punishment I'd been dreading never came. Instead, he seemingly vanished from the mansion altogether.
The servants whispered he was away on business. Victoria was nowhere to be found either. While part of me felt relieved, a deeper instinct kept me on edge.
It wasn't until this morning that my temporary peace shattered.
"Miss Haven." The maid's soft knock made me flinch. "Alpha requests you prepare for an outing today."
My hand froze mid-brush stroke. He was back. "Where... where are we going?"
"Alpha said you'll see when you arrive." She laid out a casual but expensive outfit - exactly the kind of thing Marcus liked seeing me in. "He's waiting downstairs."
My hands still trembled as I made my way downstairs. My mind raced through possible scenarios. Was this finally it? Was he taking me somewhere private for whatever sick punishment he'd been planning?
He stood in the foyer, radiating that effortless authority. His eyes raked over me, lingering just long enough to remind me of our last encounter. Of how I'd trembled under those same hands, how I'd screamed in his face. How I'd dared to challenge him in his own territory.
I expected rage. Punishment. Instead, his lips curved into that infuriating smirk that never failed to make my skin prickle with unease.
"Good morning, little wolf." His voice held a edge of dark amusement. "Sleep well these past few days?"
The casual mockery in his tone made it clear he knew exactly how many sleepless nights I'd spent waiting for his retribution. Bastard.
I forced myself to meet his gaze. "Where are we going?"
"So impatient." He stepped closer, invading my space with deliberate slowness. "But then, patience has never been your strong suit, has it?"
My breath caught as he reached past me to open the front door. "After you."
The drive was torture. Marcus sat beside me in silence, ignoring my existence as we left the city behind. Buildings gave way to trees, civilization fading in our rearview mirror. My heart rate picked up with each mile marker we passed.
"Where are you taking me?" I finally asked, hating how small my voice sounded.
"You'll see soon enough." His tone gave nothing away.
When we finally turned onto a tree-lined drive, I was practically vibrating with nervous energy. A large iron gate loomed ahead, but what caught my attention were the people waiting beside it - a man and woman standing with what looked like a group of children.
Wait. What?
"Alpha! Alpha's here!" The excited chorus of yips and howls filled the air as a pack of wolf cubs practically tumbled over each other to reach the car. Their eyes glowed with excitement, some of the younger ones barely controlling their partial shifts in their enthusiasm.
I watched in stunned disbelief as Marcus - the same man who'd terrorized me in his dungeon just days ago - stepped out and was immediately swarmed by tiny pups. Even more shocking? He was... smiling? Not his usual predatory grin, but something genuine that transformed his entire face.
"Easy there, little ones," he chuckled as several pups tried climbing him at once. "What happened to proper pack greeting?"
The cubs immediately attempted to line up, though their wagging tails and bouncing energy made it more of a wiggling cluster than an actual line. They tilted their heads back, exposing their throats in proper submission, though giggles somewhat ruined the formal gesture.
"Miss Haven." The man approached my side of the car, offering a friendly hand. "I'm David, the Gamma of this pack, and this is my wife Sarah. Welcome to our school."
A school? I looked around with new eyes, taking in what I'd assumed was some kind of estate. Beyond the gate stood a sprawling building that could have been a small private academy.
"The children have been excited since hearing you'd visit," Sarah added warmly. "It's not often they get to meet new people."
I followed them inside, still trying to reconcile this situation with my expectations. David explained as we walked: "Gang warfare and pack conflicts leave a lot of orphaned cubs. Most end up on the streets or worse. But thanks to Alpha's support, we can offer them safety and education here."
Marcus was already ahead of us, hauling a massive box from the trunk that I hadn't noticed before. The kids crowded around as he opened it, revealing an assortment of new toys. Their delighted squeals filled the air as they dug through the treasure trove.
"Alpha, alpha! Look what I found!" A tiny pup, couldn't have been more than five, waved a toy car excitedly.
And then Marcus, the most feared Alpha in the city, dropped to one knee to properly admire the toy. "That's a nice one. Think it's faster than a werewolf?"
The pup's eyes lit up at the challenge. Marcus scooped him onto his shoulders, causing delighted yips and howls. "Hold on tight, little one!"
What followed was something I never thought I'd witness - Marcus playing tag with a pack of wolf cubs. He let them chase him around the playground, purposely running slow enough for the little ones to catch up. When they finally cornered him, he dramatically collapsed under their "attack," letting them climb all over him while making exaggerated groans of defeat.
"The mighty Alpha falls to the fierce pack!" he declared, causing squeals of victory from his tiny conquerors.
"Surprising, isn't it?" Sarah's knowing smile told me my shock must have been obvious. "Most people only see the Alpha, the businessman, the enforcer. They forget there's more to him than that."
We spent the afternoon touring the school. The facilities were impressive - clean dormitories, well-equipped classrooms, even a small medical wing. Everything these kids could need.
"The silent treatment?" Marcus's voice broke through my thoughts on the drive back. The setting sun painted the sky in soft pinks and oranges, matching my oddly peaceful mood. "And here I thought watching me get mauled by cubs might have improved your mood."
I glanced at him, surprised by the almost playful tone. There was still an edge there, a reminder of who he was, but it lacked the usual menace.
"I was just thinking..." I hesitated, then decided honesty might be my best defense. "I didn't expect this side of you."
"Mm." His lips quirked slightly. "I've noticed you expect the worst of me. Though after your little performance the other night, I suppose that's fair."
I tensed, but his tone remained surprisingly light. Almost amused.
"You've been watching me?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"Always." The simple word carried weight, but his next words came with a hint of dark humor. "Someone has to keep track of my most... defiant houseguest."
The casual acknowledgment of our power dynamic should have terrified me. Instead, I found myself fighting back a smile at his phrasing.
His expression sobered slightly. "Good. Because you'll need that improved mood for tonight."
"What's happening tonight?"
"Dinner." His grip tightened slightly on the steering wheel. "With your father."
