The possession
The possession
The golden glow in Lucas's eyes intensified as the First Luna's consciousness fully inhabited his small body. Elena thrashed against her chains, the silver burning her wrists as she fought desperately to reach her son.
"Let him go!" Elena screamed. "He's innocent! He has nothing to do with this!"
"On the contrary," the First Luna said through Lucas's mouth, his voice layered with ancient power and feminine rage. "The boy is everything. He's the bridge between worlds, the crack in reality itself. Did you truly think his existence was an accident?"
Isabella stepped back from the altar, her expression triumphant. "Welcome, First Luna. We've waited so long for your return."
"Have you?" The First Luna turned Lucas's head toward Isabella with unnatural precision. "How touching. Tell me, little wolf, what do you expect as your reward for freeing me?"
"Freedom," Isabella said eagerly. "Freedom from the mate bond system. Freedom from the Moon Goddess's manipulation. You promised us—"
"I promised you nothing," the First Luna interrupted coldly. "You heard what you wanted to hear. Just as my granddaughter's mother heard promises that were never made. Just as every desperate fool who's tried to free me over the centuries heard exactly what they needed to justify their actions."
Isabella's face paled. "But you said—"
"I said I would reshape this world," the First Luna confirmed. "And I will. But did you truly believe I would spare the wolves? The creatures my beloved's murderer created to replace him? You're all abominations in my eyes. Living reminders of what I lost."
Thomas stepped forward, his hand moving to a weapon at his belt. "You're lying. You need us. We're your army."
"I need no one," the First Luna said. She raised Lucas's small hand, and Thomas flew backward, slamming into the wall with bone-crushing force. He slumped to the ground, unconscious or dead. "I am vengeance incarnate. I am grief made manifest. And I will burn this world to ash before I allow the Moon Goddess's legacy to continue."
Sarah ran for the door, but Marcus blocked her path. "Wait," he said, his voice shaking. "We can reason with her. We can—"
"You can die," the First Luna said simply. Lucas's hand moved again, and both Sarah and Marcus seized, their bodies going rigid as invisible force crushed them from within.
Elena watched in horror as the two conspirators collapsed, blood trickling from their eyes and ears. Marcus's last look was toward Elena, regret and apology written across his dying face.
"No!" Isabella shouted. She summoned her enhanced magic, hurling it at Lucas's possessed form. But the attack dissipated before it could connect, absorbed by the First Luna's superior power.
"Did you truly believe the Moon Goddess's gift would work against me?" the First Luna laughed. "That pathetic enhancement is nothing compared to what I am. I was ancient when your grandmother's grandmother was born, little wolf. I am the first. I am the original. And you are nothing but an insect beneath my notice."
Isabella's enhanced magic flickered and died. The First Luna gestured, and Isabella's neck snapped with an audible crack. She fell beside her fellow conspirators, eyes wide with betrayal and shock.
In less than a minute, the conspiracy that had threatened the pack for three years was eliminated. But the threat remained, now wearing Elena's son's face.
"Please," Elena begged, tears streaming down her face. "Please don't hurt him. Lucas is innocent. He's just a child."
"He is a vessel," the First Luna corrected, turning her attention back to Elena. "A perfect, powerful vessel that I've been cultivating since before his conception. Did you think the Moon Goddess was the only one manipulating bloodlines? I've been whispering to your family for generations, guiding your ancestors to specific partners, engineering the perfect host for my return."
"You're lying," Elena said, but fear made her voice weak. "You've been sealed away. You couldn't have—"
"The seal contains my body, not my mind," the First Luna interrupted. "I've been dreaming my way through reality for a thousand years, touching susceptible minds, planting suggestions. Your mother wasn't trying to free me out of altruism. I made her believe it was her destiny. Just as I made Marcus believe his manufactured bond was an injustice worth destroying a pack over. Just as I made you doubt your love for Harrison, weakening the very bond that might have kept me imprisoned."
Elena felt her world crumbling. Every choice, every doubt, every moment of uncertainty—had any of it been real? Or had she been dancing on strings pulled by an ancient monster?
"Why are you telling me this?" Elena asked.
"Because I want you to understand the depth of your failure," the First Luna said. "I want you to know that every decision you made led here. To this moment. To your son's possession. To your pack's destruction. To the end of everything the Moon Goddess built."
"The Moon Goddess will stop you," Elena said desperately.
"Will she?" The First Luna smiled with Lucas's face, and it was the most terrible thing Elena had ever seen. "Where is she now, granddaughter? Why hasn't she intervened? Could it be that she's occupied elsewhere? Fighting a war on multiple fronts as I've arranged disasters across the supernatural world?"
Elena's blood ran cold. "What have you done?"
"I've been preparing," the First Luna said. "For every conspiracy member you caught, three more remained hidden. For every threat you neutralized, two more were activated. Right now, across the globe, mate bonds are being severed by force. Alphas are being assassinated. Pack territories are erupting into war. The Moon Goddess is spread thin, trying to contain the chaos, unable to spare attention for one little boy in one little pack."
"Someone will stop you," Elena said. "Harrison will—"
"Harrison is fighting for his life," the First Luna interrupted. "The fires at the pack house were just the beginning. Right now, he's surrounded by enemies, his pack in disarray, his father revealed as a traitor, his mate missing. He's strong, but he's one wolf against an army I've spent years assembling."
Elena closed her eyes, pain overwhelming everything else. She'd failed. Failed Harrison, failed Lucas, failed the pack. The First Luna was right—every choice had led here, to the worst possible outcome.
"However," the First Luna said, and Elena's eyes snapped open at the shift in tone. "I'm not without mercy."
"What?"
"I'll offer you a choice," the First Luna said. "One genuine choice, free from manipulation or coercion. Something the Moon Goddess never gave you."
"What choice?" Elena asked warily.
"Submit to me willingly," the First Luna said. "Let me use your body as my primary vessel instead of the boy's. Your bloodline connection is stronger, your power more developed. With you as my host, I can break the seal completely and walk this world in my full glory. In exchange, I'll release Lucas unharmed. He'll have no memory of this possession, no lasting trauma. He'll grow up normal, happy, free from the destiny I engineered for him."
"And I'll be gone," Elena said. "Erased. My consciousness destroyed while you wear my skin."
"Yes," the First Luna confirmed. "But your son will live. Your mate will have a chance to rebuild. The pack will survive my initial rampage because I'll be focused on hunting the Moon Goddess, not them. It's a fair trade—one life for hundreds."
Elena's mind raced. It was a devil's bargain, but what choice did she have? Lucas was innocent. He deserved a life free from ancient monsters and divine manipulation.
