Chapter 307
Chapter 307
Ashley pov
The world around me is chaos, but all I can focus on is Constantine in the distance. A rogue lunges at him, claws out, teeth bared. Time seems to slow as I see the massive bear falter for just a moment, his balance thrown off from the fight. My heart skips a beat.
“No!” I scream, but my voice gets lost in the roar of the battle.
Then, Dominic appears like a blur. Before I can fully understand what’s happening, Dominic throws himself in front of Constantine. The rogue’s claws rake across Dominic’s chest, the sickening sound of tearing flesh reaching my ears.
“Dominic!”
I can’t stop the scream that rips from my throat as I watch him collapse to the ground. Blood pours from his wounds, staining the dirt beneath him. Constantine lets out a roar so loud it shakes the air. He shifts back into his human form, dropping to his knees beside Dominic, his hands trembling as they hover over his mate’s broken body.
I run towards them, not caring about any consequences.
“No, no, no, no,” Constantine shouts, his voice cracking. “Dominic, look at me. Stay with me!”
Dominic’s breathing is shallow, his chest rising and falling in uneven jerks. His face is pale, his eyes fluttering closed. Constantine grips his hand tightly, his own tears fall freely now.
“You idiot,” Constantine chokes out, his voice thick with emotion. “Why would you do that? Why?”
“Because... I love you,” Dominic whispers, his voice barely audible, but I’m close enough to hear it.
Constantine lets out the most heart-wrenching cry I’ve ever heard. It’s raw, filled with pain so deep it feels like the ground itself might crack open beneath us. Tears blur my vision as I watch him clutch Dominic’s hand like it’s the only thing keeping him from falling apart completely.
And then, as if summoned by the sheer intensity of the moment, the air shifts. A ripple of power sweeps through the battlefield, freezing everyone in place. The rogues stop in their tracks, their snarls silenced, their movements halted.
Out of nowhere, a woman appears.
She steps into the clearing, her presence commanding, her every movement dripping with power. Her dark robes flow around her as if carried by an invisible wind. Her eyes gleam with a golden light that seems to pierce through everything it touches.
With a simple flick of her fingers, the rogues are gone. Just like that, they vanish, leaving only silence in their wake. The battlefield that was once filled with chaos and blood is now eerily quiet, save for the sound of Constantine’s sobs.
I stare in shock and back away as the witch turns her attention to Kaiden. He’s still standing at the gate, his face twisted in anger. Before he can react, she waves her hand, and a golden cage materializes around him.
Kaiden slams his fists against them, roaring in anger, but the cage doesn’t budge. “Let me out!” he screams, his voice echoing through the clearing. “You can’t do this to me!”
The witch doesn’t even glance his way. Her focus shifts to Dominic, and for the first time, I see something other than cold power in her eyes. There’s warmth there. Concern.
She kneels beside him, her hands glowing with a soft, golden light as she places them over his wounds.
“Come on, son,” she murmurs, her voice gentle yet commanding. “You can make it. You’re stronger than this.”
Her hands move with practiced precision, the light seeping into Dominic’s skin. Slowly, the bleeding stops, the torn flesh knits itself back together. Constantine watches with wide, tear-filled eyes, his hand never letting go of Dominic’s.
“Is he... is he going to be okay?” Constantine asks, his voice trembling.
The witch glances up at him and offers a small smile. “He’ll live,” she mutters.
As if on cue, Dominic sucks in a deep breath, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. His eyes flutter open, and he looks up at Constantine with a faint smile. “I told you,” Dominic whispers weakly. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Constantine lets out a shaky laugh, pulling Dominic into a gentle hug. “You’re an idiot,” he mutters, though his voice is filled with relief.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding, my hands shaking as I press them against my chest. Dominic is alive. He’s going to be okay.
But before I can fully process what just happened, the witch’s eyes find mine.
A chill runs down my spine as she stands, her golden gaze locking onto me. She steps closer, her movements slow and deliberate, and then, to my utter shock, she drops to her knees.
She bows her head, her hands pressed against the ground in a gesture of reverence. “So it is true,” she says, her voice filled with awe. “The direct descendant of the Goddess in flesh.”
I stare at her, completely speechless. The weight of her words sinks in slowly, and I feel like the ground beneath me is about to give way.
“What... what are you talking about?” I manage to stammer.
She lifts her head, her golden eyes meeting mine again. “You are the one we have waited for,” she explains. “The blood of the Goddess runs through your veins. You are the key to everything.”
I feel like the world is spinning around me. My knees buckle, and I stumble back a step, my mind racing to make sense of her words. “I... I don’t understand,” I whisper.
“You will,” she says simply, a small, knowing smile on her lips. “In time, you will.”
Her gaze feels like it’s burning into me, and for a moment, I can’t breathe. Everything around me fades away - the battlefield, the blood, the bodies, and all I can see is her, kneeling before me like I’m something sacred.
But I’m not. I’m just... me.
And to make this situation even worse, even the bears follow her lead and drop to their knees, the same as the witch has. What the fuck?
