The Shocking Truth
Mia's POV
I struggled against the grip on my wrist, but the person didn't bulge. Who the hell was that? My heart pounding in my chest as I turned. An elder stood before me, staring at me with cold, sharp calculating eyes that glowly faintly under the dim light of the archives.
"You shouldn't be here, princess," he repeated again, his voice laced with quiet warning.
I looked at him more closely, but he doesn't seemed familiar in anyway though he looked ominous than the other elders I have seen. I tightened my grip on the book while his grip was still on my wrist. "Who are you?" I demanded, my voice sharper and it was something that surprised even me.
He didn't answer. Instead his gaze snapped to the book. "Secrets like these should remain buried forever, Princess. You won't remain the same after you read this."
"Why?" I demanded, my voice rising in frustration. "What is about mother that y'all are trying so hard to hide? Why are you all being cowards?"
Instead of answering, he snatched the book away from me.
"Give me that." I tried to snatch the book back. He stepped back, holding the book tightly. I moved closer to him but before I knew it, he was already at the end of the room.
I opened my mouth. I was shocked to the bone marrow. How did he get there in seconds? How did he move with such.... incredible, unnatural speed? The speed at which he moved shouldn't have been possible for a man, this pale and with freekle bones. But then, he was a werewolf. I knew everyone here had incredible strength and speed but even at that.....
My heart slammed against my ribs, as I fought him, but no matter how fast I strike, he was always ready to receive or dodged it. Fuck! I need to check what is inside that book and the fact that was fighting so hard to protect it only makes me more suspicious.
I had speculated two scenarios to expect from the book. It's either it's contains lies or a very painful truth. Anyone it was, I won't mind. Staying in the dark is as much pain.
The elder was in front of me, but he was really never there. I lung again, and the book slipped away from his grasp.
Thud.
The book hit the floor sharply.
And as if being controlled by some mystic forces, the wind blow in stronger from the single window in the room and the pages fluttered open.
Luna Jasmine: The betrayer of the Lunarstrike pack.
What? A lump formed in my throat. My mother's name was there. Just right there, clear and undeniable. Then my eyes shifted to the next line.
Once threatened the Pack’s leadership by working with a rival Pack.
The words sent shivers down my spine. The Elder quickly snatched it and that was it, I couldn't read more.
The words replayed in my mind, and my breath seized.
My mother...worked with the enemy?
No. No, that wasn't true. This can't be.
My fingers trembled slightly as I looked up at the Elder. His face was unreadable, hinting that he wasn't very pleased with my defiance. Before I could say a word, he moved swiftly towards the shelf, and slipped the book back from where I had retrieved it earlier.
"Enough, he said firmly, his voice sharp enough to cut. "Leave child. This is not for you to know."
I wanted to argue, to plead, do anything but a glare from him told me it was useless. With my fists clenched so tightly, I turned and made my way towards the room.
Back in my room, it was like the space was closing in on me. My mother.... a traitor? The word sounded absurd. But that book... I have heard that only important documents was found in the archives. And in a pack as big as the Lunarstrike pack, they wouldn't have kept fake documents there, would they?
Doubts, fear, speculations gnawed at me. What if this was true? What if mother truly is a traitor? I have heard from different sources and people, and could they all be lieing?
But just as quickly as the thoughts came, I shook my head. My mother is a beautiful, kind and loyal woman. I believe in her than I believe in myself. The woman who had raised me would never have done something like that. There has to be more to this story, and I will investigate. I would find the truth, they've all been hiding. I had to.
The book. I would go back and find it again. I don't care how strong or strange the elder was, I would lay my hands on it.
The remaining of the night were filled with trials and errors as I speculated the different approach to start my investigation from. And I must admit that it was harder than expected. No one was going to share any information with me in the pack. I had no one to trust or rely on....... except Lyra.
Hope ignited inside me. Lyra. Yes, Lyra. She might know something, anything that would lead me anywhere.
My eyes found the table clock by the bed side. 2:50 am. I didn't realise I had spent more than four hours while deliberating on this.
Lyra would probably be asleep already. I will ask her first time tomorrow morning. I exhaled sharply, and allowed myself to breathe. At least, I was making progress with my training session and the investigation too.
Zane had commended me earlier and it was something to hold onto. But come to think of it, what was that strange power that I felt? It was different from strength and speed. It felt like something..... supernatural. Something..... raw.
Whatever. I should really sleep now. Who knows other secrets or tasks that awaits me tomorrow. I need to be physically and emotionally guarded always. That was the only way to survive here, to survive amidst these wolves that are ready to tear my life apart at the slightest opportunity.
I laid on the bed, and pulled the covers over myself. I didn't know when I fell asleep.
*****
Ding. Ding.
The shrill ring of my phone echoed through the room, and it made my jump up from my sleep. Fuck! I was in a wet dream with Jasper, and I could literally feel the wetness that had pulled down in my panties.
I reached for the phone, frowning. An unknown number.
I hesitated before answering because not too many people knew this number. Before coming here, I had discarded my old number and gotten a new one with the hope that I and Jasper won't be able to contact eachother, and I deeply regretted that.
Everyday, I thought about it. Was he trying to call me? Would he have called me if I still had my old contact?
"Hello?" A professional voice spoke on the other end. "Is that Miss Montana? We're calling from the hospital regarding Victoria Montana.
I straightened. My mother? "Yes."
The voice continued. "She's awake."
What? Everything inside me stilled. Mother is awake after six months in coma? It was unbelievable at first but then.... the nurse wouldn't play pranks on me.
My heart swelled with joy and gratitude, and then a slow smile tugged at the corners of my lips, widening with each passing second.
Then suddenly, I jumped up on the bed, my excited screams echoing through the room and I knew if others could hear me, they would probably say I was finally going crazy.
If she was awake, that means I can't leave here anytime I want, since I don't exactly need the medication Ezra promised anymore. The thought filled with immense happiness.
"Mother's awake."
