Chapter 6

“This is all your fault,” I snapped at Logan the minute Principal Donna shut the door in our faces. “Why can’t you be a normal teenager like every other seventeen-year-old? Devil’s incarnate.”

He scoffed, a dark brow rising. “My fault? You’re the one who tried to burn down the school. You’re the devil’s incarnate here, not me.”

“Boo hoo,” I huffed, sliding my backpack over my shoulders. “I can’t believe I have to spend the rest of my senior year working with you.” I turned on my heel and started walking away from him. Principal Donna had finally found the best punishment for me. Or should I say the worst.

“You can’t believe?” Logan’s baffled voice ran out from behind me. “Hey, I’m the one with a reputation to uphold here, not you.”

I snorted, keeping my face forward. “You don’t say.”

“You should be happy that you get to spend any time at all with me.”

I swear his ego knew no bounds. “You must think you’re some hotshot.”

He suddenly stepped in front of me, halting my steps. “I know I’m a hotshot.” His lips curved up in a stupid smirk. “The fact that you don’t find me attractive doesn’t reflect poorly on me. It just means you have bad taste.”

I could see why he thought he was every woman’s dream. As I mentioned, if I didn’t constantly have the urge to smack him across the face, I’d have thought he was handsome. Luckily for me, I did have that urge and I only had goals, not dreams.

Besides, men were a waste of time and Logan Hernández was the worst of them all.

“Logan,” I started, “I don’t know what you think will happen during this… unfortunate time we have to spend together but I can assure you that I have no interest in anything else other than acing this project. Not even you will keep me from achieving my goals, so I suggest you get your head out of your ass and your foot out of your mouth.”

I took in a deep breath then walked past him, enjoying the fact that I had gotten the last word. Abruptly, I stopped and swung my head around to look at him. “Logan?”

He turned to meet my eyes but made no comment.

“You’re not my type,” throwing him a fake smile, I turned and strode away, the look of anger on his face enough to make my day.

****

“Who do you think he was going to say?” I asked my best friends that night when we gathered in my bedroom. “I’ve had no luck figuring it out and I’ve been thinking about it all day.”

I’d told them how Logan had said he cared about his sister and his mom, and then how he stopped abruptly before he told me the other person, but he had said enough to make it sound like the name started with a Y.

Aimee smacked her lips. “Whose name starts with a ‘Y’?" She hummed at the back of her throat. “Remember Yvonne Kinsley? She’s a junior and they dated.”

“The redhead? I don’t think so.” Their relationship had lasted only for a month or so and Logan wasn’t the commitment type. The ridiculous trail of ex-girlfriends he’d left behind was evidence enough. “Besides, he’d broken up with her in front of the entire school at the cafeteria and she was crying and Logan was laughing like it was the funniest thing he had ever seen in his entire life.”

But who else could it be? I didn’t know why I was so interested but somehow, I was. Logan wasn’t the type to care about people. The boy was the most conceited person I’d ever come across in my entire life. So, if he actually cared about anyone other than himself, I wanted to know.

“Well, shoot,” Darren finally muttered, shaking his head. He swiveled to face us on the office chair in front of my desk. “There goes my theory, then.”

“Theory?” I asked, blinking at him in confusion. “What theory?”

“That Logan secretly likes you,” he said, looking too smug for his own good.

“What?” I shrieked, horrified. Even Aimee gasped. “Are you insane? Logan? Likes me? That’s literally impossible. We’ve known each other since preschool and we’ve hated each other for even longer. It’s just impossible.”

Darren shrugged, leaning back a little and taking in our shocked faces. “What?” he asked, crossing his muscled arm over his chest. “You two have never thought about it, not even once? It’s just a theory, but haven’t you ever heard of the guy making fun of the girl because he secretly likes her?”

“Yeah, stupid boys,” Aimee pointed out, shaking her head at him. I had to agree with her on that. What kind of sick, immature guy picked on a girl because he liked her? I mean, why would I want to go out with a guy that annoys the living daylight out of me? It just didn’t make sense. “There’s just no way Logan likes Lexi. He’s too arrogant and narcissistic. Just… no.”

Darren shrugged again. “I would know. I mean, I’m a guy. But as I said, it’s just a theory.”

The thought occurred to me to tell Yvonne. Why not? Maybe he finally realized he’d been an asshole to her and he wanted to make up but didn’t know how to. I should have been looking forward to telling Yvonne. But… I wasn’t.

“Lexi? Lexi? What do you think?”

I blinked, zoning back in from my thoughts and letting out a loud sigh. I wasn’t going to do anything just yet. I would wait for the perfect time to tell her, when Logan did something terrible to me or my friends—which could happen at any time.

But he had done something, I guess. Because of him, I had to spend the rest of my senior year stuck on a project with the boy I hated most in the world.

“I don’t think we should tell Yvonne just yet,” I finally said, nodding at them a little as I got an idea. “I think we should wait just a little. I wanted Logan to know what it feels like to have his heart broken.”

“But what if Yvonne still likes him back?” Aimee asked the question that was going through all of our minds. That would be a problem. I doubted it because if I had been the one Logan had embarrassed like that in front of everyone, I would want to kill him. But it was still a possibility and it would not go well with the plan.

“I don’t think that’ll happen,” I said with a wave of my hand. “Unless she’s desperate, I don’t think she still likes him.”

There was silence for a few seconds as Darren and Aimee looked at me like I suddenly grew a second head. “What? Why are you both looking at me like that?”

“Are you sure you don’t like Logan?” Aimee asked, one eyebrow rising.

My eyes widened and I scoffed. “Ew! Of course, not. Not in a million years.”

Darren blinked. “Your response was pretty quick there, Lexi.”

“No, it wasn’t.”

I glared at them intensely and after a while, they dropped it. Of course I didn’t like Logan. He was the bane of my existence and the source of all my frustrations. I would be crazy to even think of falling for him.

We were complete opposites and always would be.
