Chapter 90 He Said the Wrong Thing
He didn't want to think too deeply about it, but he couldn't control the anxiety and discomfort in his heart.
Without knowing why, he stood up, walked over to Joanna, and asked: "I've never seen you in a wedding dress. Why? Do you like that man so much that you're willing to dress up in your most beautiful look for him?"
Joanna was silent for a moment. "This is a wedding dress fitting. When we got married, didn't you refuse because you said you didn't have time?"
Only then did Chris realize what a stupid question he had asked.
He felt somewhat annoyed: "We haven't even gotten our divorce certificate yet, and you already have a boyfriend? It's that Angelo, isn't it? Joanna, how much money do you actually need? Why did you choose him?"
"Chris!" Joanna shouted at him. "Aren't you also here with your fiancée picking out wedding dresses? Compared to you, Angelo and I are moving much slower. You have no right to question me now!"
Chris was left speechless.
He knew he shouldn't blame Joanna, but thinking about how she would marry another man in the future, live together, sleep together, and even treat another man the way she used to please him - his heart burned with anxiety and discomfort, like it was on fire.
Cynthia watched Chris walk toward Joanna with an unpleasant expression, but still deliberately pretended to be gracious and walked over: "Oh, it's Miss Jones! What a coincidence - you're also here picking out wedding dresses at the same time and place as us."
These words were meant to stir up trouble.
Fiona immediately caught on - this was an indirect accusation that they had deliberately arranged this encounter!
"If I hadn't made this appointment a month ago, I'd think you deliberately chose the same day as us," Fiona said with a cold laugh, firing back without hesitation.
She hated homewreckers most of all, especially one who had interfered with her good friend's relationship.
Cynthia's face turned pale, as if hurt by these words. She grabbed Chris's sleeve and said pitifully: "Chris, maybe we should just leave. Miss Jones's friend seems to really dislike us."
Chris refused outright: "Why should we leave? Joanna, you deliberately came here on this day, waiting to come out in your wedding dress at the same time as Cynthia, trying to outshine her and make yourself look prettier! Your intentions are so malicious - no wonder my parents don't like you!"
Hearing this, Joanna almost laughed in anger.
"Well, I must be really talented to time things so perfectly! Besides, this isn't my store - how would I know you and Cynthia were coming to try on wedding dresses today?"
The staff member quickly explained: "It really is a coincidence. Fiona made her appointment a month ago. Originally another engaged couple had also booked this time, but they cancelled a few days ago due to something coming up. Then Mr. Cooper, your mother called to inquire, so we gave you that time slot. We had no idea you all knew each other - this is truly a misunderstanding."
Despite the staff member's explanation, Chris was still angry. Perhaps he had felt uncomfortable from the moment Joanna walked in.
"Since this mess was created by your store, then as compensation, kick them out!" Chris said through gritted teeth.
The staff member was immediately in a difficult position, looking at Cynthia with pleading eyes: "Cynthia, please help us out here? Miss Fang paid a deposit. If we kick them out, our store would be breaking the contract and would have to pay a huge penalty."
Cynthia hesitated for a moment.
Thinking of how Joanna had just outshone her, she quickly hardened her heart and said with a smile: "It's okay. After all, Chris and I caused your bridal shop this loss. I can pay part of it for you."
Fiona immediately got angry: "Why should we? We booked first - if anyone should leave, it's you!"
Joanna also refused to back down, directly pulling up her phone's call screen: "I think I can report you to the regulatory bureau for forcing us to break our contract, causing both the bridal shop and us economic and emotional damages."
Seeing things escalate, the staff member hurried to get the manager.
She couldn't handle such a complicated situation.
Chris's face contorted with anger: "Joanna, why do you have to go against me! Cynthia hasn't done anything wrong - why do you have to compete with her and make her upset! Can't you be more generous and give in to her just this once?"
"Why should I give in to her?" Joanna shot back. "If I remember correctly, Cynthia is a year older than me, right? And she's the one who interfered with our relationship. The fact that I haven't hit her, cursed her out, or exposed her online is already pretty tolerant of me!"
"I can't argue with you. You're becoming more and more disobedient. Divorcing you was definitely the best decision I ever made!" Chris said irritably, throwing out this line.
And Joanna's eyes slowly reddened at these words.
"You're right. The divorce is indeed the one thing you've done that I'm most grateful for!"
After saying this, she turned and went into the fitting room to change, ignoring Chris and Cynthia's argument.
Fiona was so angry she cursed at them: "What did Joanna do wrong? You're clearly her husband - why do you keep defending an outsider! And Cynthia, don't get too smug - if he can treat Joanna this way, sooner or later he'll treat you the same way!"
After saying those words, Chris actually regretted them.
After the divorce, he hadn't felt as happy as he'd imagined.
He had only said that because Joanna had made him angry - it wasn't what he really thought.
In fact, when sleeping, he had started to miss having Joanna beside him.
He enjoyed Joanna's care and consideration, and suddenly began to miss how she used to hover around him talking, and the carefully tended flowers and plants at the villa.
Rationally, Chris knew he should apologize to Joanna, but his pride wouldn't let him open his mouth.
Cynthia noticed Chris's strange behavior and felt a bit nervous.
She had urged Chris to come try on wedding dresses to push forward their marriage plans, not to create this encounter between the two of them.
"Chris, let's not argue with Miss Jones anymore. She's a girl after all, and wearing a wedding dress is supposed to be her most beautiful day - let's not make her unhappy. How about this - Chris and I will pay for Miss Fang and Miss Jones's dress fittings today. If you decide on a wedding dress, Chris will buy it for you too, as a blessing from friends."
Fiona rolled her eyes: "Who wants it!"
After saying this, she ducked into the fitting room, not wanting to face these two people anymore.
Cynthia felt a bit embarrassed.
Chris glanced at the quiet fitting room and said: "Just go with the one you're wearing. Change out of it yourself - I'm heading back to the office."
After saying this, he didn't want to stay either.
When the manager finally arrived, she could only apologize and offer compensation to a stone-faced Cynthia.
Cynthia wanted to lose her temper, but couldn't afford the consequences of the penalty, so she could only stand there with her face contorted in anger.
In the fitting room, Joanna had already composed herself and was taking off the wedding dress.
Fiona's sudden entrance startled her, but after seeing it was her, Joanna relaxed and continued changing.
"Joanna, how did you ever fall for a guy like that? I'm so angry I could explode!"
Joanna forced a smile: "I'm sorry for ruining your wedding dress shopping. Do you want to try another store in a bit?"
