Chapter 119 Attending the Wedding
Victor, the head of the pharmaceutical research institute!
Joanna took a photo of the business card and sent it to Luke: "Is Victor the head of your research institute?"
Luke quickly called back: "Joanna, you met Victor? The institute started working with Smith Group, so Victor went to Austin City. He wanted to see the successful cases from the first batch of trial participants."
Joanna had already guessed when she saw the business card: "Victor created this pharmaceutical research institute for his father Idris, right?"
"Yes, Idris was someone who made huge contributions to Valeria. You might know Idris's wife—Sloane, who passed away five years ago."
Luke's tone revealed admiration.
After hearing about their identities, Joanna felt the same way.
Sloane was a very famous figure in the medical field who cured many cases. She was even the only all-around doctor—orthopedic trauma, cardiac and neurological surgery, vascular tumors and internal organs—she could complete surgeries in all these areas with high success rates.
The first page of medical textbooks often featured an introduction to Sloane.
It was said that even at sixty years old, Sloane went abroad to study medicine.
Her life was full of legends, but sadly too short.
When Joanna studied medicine, only legends remained—Sloane was already gone.
After learning that Idris's spouse was Sloane, Joanna finally felt some respect.
She helped pack things up and watched Victor leave with Idris.
On her way to work at the hospital, Joanna kept thinking about one thing.
How did Idris end up following Mireille and Chase's words to come to the hospital and extort her?
Could this whole thing be a misunderstanding?
If she figured it out, she might even need to apologize to Idris.
Joanna tiredly rubbed her temples.
Dr. Lawson happened to pass by, and seeing she was in a bad mood, asked about it.
After hearing about Idris's identity, Dr. Lawson also fell silent, feeling somewhat heartbroken: "Too bad current medical technology still can't cure Idris!"
Joanna sighed and comforted him: "Didn't the first batch of experiments with the new drug just finish? The institute is researching this drug to cure more people. Maybe it will help with Idris's condition too."
"Let's hope so!"
After expressing his feelings, Dr. Lawson became even more passionate about his work.
Under his influence, Joanna and other colleagues also gave up their rest time, constantly running between the operating room and patient wards.
The second Friday was Fiona's wedding.
Joanna specifically switched shifts to make time for the wedding.
She sent the gift early and went to the banquet hall to wait.
While bored, she unexpectedly saw two familiar figures outside.
Chris and Cynthia!
Why were they here?
Joanna was absolutely certain that Fiona didn't know these two people and wouldn't have invited them.
She felt resistant to meeting these two, but through the banquet hall door, Chris had already seen her.
The banquet hall manager was introducing the venue: "When Mr. Cooper and Cynthia hold your wedding, we can handle any style you want, even an outdoor chapel. There happens to be a couple getting married today who chose this hall's style. Mr. Cooper can observe our service—you'll definitely get your money's worth."
Chris kept staring at Joanna and didn't listen to the manager at all.
Cynthia's health was already weak. After coughing a few times, Chris finally snapped back and said casually: "We'll go with your place. We'll take the style options back to choose."
The manager was happy to close another deal. "Great, I'll have someone bring the style catalog right away. Mr. Cooper can try our banquet menu—the food is definitely as good as any restaurant!"
Chris was still lost in thought and didn't answer.
Because he suddenly realized that when he thought back to his first marriage with Joanna, he had no memory of it at all.
Had he gone too far back then?
Cynthia also noticed Chris's distraction and took the initiative: "Chris, are you still angry about Miss Jones causing me to lose the baby? Didn't she already explain it had nothing to do with her? If you're still angry, why don't you go talk to her face to face?"
Chris actually started to move forward but stopped himself within three steps.
With a stern face, he said angrily: "We're not the ones who did anything wrong. She should be the one apologizing to you."
Then he turned to the manager: "Who's getting married in there? If you kick them out, Cooper Corporation will invest a million dollars in your hotel."
Cynthia seemed surprised and said insincerely: "Chris, isn't that wrong? To make me feel better, hurting Miss Jones's friends like this—isn't that going too far?"
Chris said coldly: "You lost a child. I'm just teaching them a small lesson. How is that going too far?"
Cynthia was secretly delighted and stopped trying to dissuade him.
The manager felt this was unethical but had no choice.
Because their banquet hall clearly couldn't afford to offend Chris.
So, half an hour before the ceremony, the manager suddenly barged in and called away the newlyweds and their parents.
Then an argument broke out.
"Why are you kicking us out? We already paid the deposit, and all our guests are here. You're saying you won't rent to us now? You know this is breach of contract, right!"
"Who cares about your penalty fee! Don't you know today is my son's wedding day? Is this how you treat customers? Believe me, I'll file a complaint!"
Fiona and her husband were also confused.
Joanna sensed something was wrong and had a bad feeling. She walked over to ask what happened.
After learning the banquet hall suddenly wouldn't rent to them, she was furious and glared at the manager: "To keep a big client, you're just going to dump us regular customers? Take me to see Chris!"
The manager didn't want to argue with this family anymore and quickly led Joanna away, leaving both families bewildered and anxious.
Joanna said nothing and directly slapped Chris across the face.
"Do you know how important a wedding is to two people? You and Cynthia have so many empty banquet halls to choose from, but you had to take my friend's hall. Are you deliberately looking for trouble!"
Cynthia screamed: "Miss Jones, how can you slap Chris in public? What if his business partners see? It will affect the Coopers' business!"
Chris, already angry from the slap, got even angrier hearing this: "Joanna, so what if I want this banquet hall? I have money and I'm willing to book this whole place so no one else can use it. You can't tell me how to spend my own money!"
