Chapter 49 Chapter 17.1
THIRD PERSON POV
Desmond was in a meeting, but he kept glancing at his phone to check if Heaven had replied. He secretly opened it under the table, answering her messages while pretending to stay focused. He was still listening, but most of his attention was clearly on his phone.
When the meeting ended, he was the first to leave the conference room. Zachary followed after him.
“I noticed you were glued to your phone earlier. Who were you chatting with? You were smiling to yourself like a crazy person,” Zachary teased. Desmond shot him a sharp look.
“Why do you always notice everything? Can’t you mind your own business for once?” Desmond muttered. Zachary let out a half-laugh and slung an arm over Desmond’s shoulder, but Desmond brushed it off immediately.
“I clearly saw you weren’t paying attention. You were bent over, looking at something under the table. I know you were holding your phone, messaging someone. So? Who’s making you smile like that? Heaven?” he continued teasing. Desmond rolled his eyes, which only made Zachary laugh harder.
“You’re so different now, Desmond. I never saw you get this giddy when you were still with Macie. But it seems like Heaven really makes you happy. How’s everything going between you two?”
“We’re fine,” Desmond replied curtly. Zachary just chuckled, used to Desmond refusing to share anything about his personal life.
When they stepped out of the hotel, Desmond immediately got into his car. The meeting had been held there, so he hadn’t been at the company all morning. He was about to drive off when Zachary blocked his car.
Desmond frowned and rolled down his window.
“What?” he asked irritably.
“My driver isn’t here yet. Let me hitch a ride,” Zachary said.
“I have somewhere to go. Just wait for your driver.” Desmond’s tone was cold as he drove off.
“That jerk! I just needed a ride! So stingy!” Zachary shouted after him, kicking the ground in frustration. Now he had no choice but to wait.
Desmond didn’t give him a ride because he needed to buy something for Heaven, and he knew Zachary would just tease him the whole time.
He drove straight to the place Heaven had mentioned where he could buy empanadas. When he arrived, he was surprised to find that it was just a small stall, not the restaurant he imagined. From the outside, you wouldn’t even recognize it as a store unless you stepped inside.
“One cheese empanada, please,” he said.
“Please take a seat, sir. Are you willing to wait? I still have a lot of orders, so I’ll cook a fresh batch,” the vendor told him. Desmond nodded and sat on a monoblock chair, glancing around the place and wondering if the food was safe for Heaven to eat.
He had never even seen an empanada before. He didn’t know if what they made here was clean. Ten minutes later, his order was finally ready.
He chuckled softly, he had paid only one dollar. He had gone out of his way to find this tiny shop just to buy a one-dollar empanada. But he couldn’t possibly say no to Heaven, not when she was craving it.
An hour later, Desmond finally arrived at the company. Heaven was waiting for him, he found her sitting on the sofa, and the moment she saw him, she stood up excitedly.
“Did you buy what I asked for?” she immediately asked. Desmond smiled and raised the paper bag. Heaven happily took it and placed the empanada in the oven, she preferred eating it hot.
“Are you sure that food is clean? The place I bought it from… it was literally someone’s home. I want to give you everything you want, but I also want to make sure the food you eat is safe,” Desmond said. He was used to clean, high-end restaurants, and he hadn’t expected to buy food from such a tiny shop.
“Don’t worry. Their food is clean. I used to buy there often. I never got food poisoning,” Heaven reassured him.
Desmond could only sigh, he didn’t want Heaven to feel bad if he disagreed with her again.
When Heaven finished heating the empanada, she sat on the sofa and split it open. It was still steaming, so she couldn’t eat it right away.
“Do you want to try some? I promise it’s good,” she offered. Desmond shook his head.
“Finish it. I only bought one, I didn’t want you to get mad and pull my hair if I brought you less than what you wanted,” he joked. Heaven laughed. She should’ve asked him to buy two so she could share, but she appreciated him either way. Desmond found himself smiling as he watched her eat so enthusiastically.
“Slow down, it’s still hot. You might burn yourself,” he reminded her before taking a seat at his swivel chair.
When Heaven finished eating, she leaned back on the sofa, rubbing her belly, she felt full again. Every time she got what she craved, it was as if the baby was happy too.
She gasped when the baby suddenly kicked.
“Baby said thank you, daddy,” Heaven said playfully. Desmond looked at her in surprise.
“He kicked?” Desmond asked excitedly. Heaven nodded, so he walked over and gently placed his hand on her belly.
“Hi, Daryl. It’s daddy. Did you like what I bought for you and your mommy?” he asked softly. They already knew the baby was a boy.
When the baby kicked again, they both laughed in surprise.
“Looks like you really enjoyed the food. If you want anything else, just tell your mommy, okay? Daddy will buy it for you,” Desmond continued. Their baby kicked once more, as if responding to him.
Desmond kissed Heaven’s forehead, unable to hide the joy he felt. He was more than excited to finally meet his son.
