Chapter 37 Adalyn Seduces Wentworth
Was it because when Reuben used to date Matilda, he often drove her home?
Every time he'd drop her off, she'd say just leaving her downstairs was fine. Then he'd stand below watching her window until he saw the light come on inside, only then reluctantly driving away.
But those memories felt so distant now. It had only been three months, yet it seemed like three years had passed—everything had changed.
---
The next morning, Matilda ate the breakfast Wentworth had prepared—scrambled eggs, bacon, toasted whole wheat bread, and a glass of orange juice. She struggled for a while before speaking up. "Wentworth, tonight at 7 PM the hospital has a celebration party. Family members can come—would you like to join me?"
"To celebrate the equipment purchase?" Wentworth asked. He'd heard Adalyn mention it.
"Yes. I was afraid you wouldn't like that kind of event, so I hadn't brought it up."
Wentworth smiled. "If you're inviting me, of course I'll go."
Matilda immediately felt relieved. "Great! See you tonight then. It's in our hospital auditorium."
---
At 7 PM, the celebration began. Any doctors not on duty attended.
Matilda waited for Wentworth at the hospital's main entrance.
She wasn't alone—several other doctors were also waiting for family members at the entrance.
Some family members drove themselves, others took Ubers. Once they arrived, they cheerfully headed inside.
Finally, only two people remained. Matilda wondered if Wentworth wasn't coming after all.
Oh well, she'd go in and wait. The auditorium was easy to find anyway—she could just ask the security guard collecting parking fees at the entrance.
She'd just turned around when someone called her name. "Matty."
It was Wentworth's voice!
She quickly spun around.
The moment she saw Wentworth, her heartbeat skipped.
God, he was gorgeous!
He wore a tailored white suit with a silver-gray tie and polished leather shoes that gleamed. He looked like he'd stepped off a fashion week runway—even Hollywood heartthrobs in their prime couldn't match his handsomeness.
Not just handsome—his bearing was noble, like royalty.
She felt her breathing slow.
He walked toward her with a faint smile. "What are you staring at? Never seen a man this handsome before?"
Her face flushed.
"You... why did you wear a suit?" Matilda finally reacted.
"Shouldn't I wear a suit to a celebration?" Wentworth countered.
Fair point.
"You... come inside with me," Matilda said.
---
Once they entered the auditorium, Wentworth understood why Matilda had been puzzled about his suit.
Because this so-called celebration was really just everyone gathering for a buffet—long tables laden with roast beef, Caesar salad, cheese-baked potatoes, mini burgers, donuts, coffee, and soda. The doctors had simply taken off their white coats and come over. The female doctors hadn't even bothered with makeup.
A bit awkward.
However, the moment he walked in, all eyes turned to him.
Even a group of bold female doctors surrounded him, instantly pushing Matilda aside.
"You're Dr. Spencer's boyfriend?"
"You're so tall! Are you 6'2"?"
"Where did you get that suit? It must be expensive, right?"
Wentworth felt awkward but answered graciously. "Yes, I'm Dr. Spencer's boyfriend... I am 6'2"... I bought the suit online for $199 with free shipping."
Adalyn was there too.
The moment she'd first seen Wentworth, she'd decided to break up with Reuben, planning to steal Wentworth away from Matilda.
So she squeezed through with a bright smile. "Mr. Gonzaga, you look more handsome every time I see you. Let me introduce myself properly again—I'm Adalyn Stewart, the director's daughter."
Pushed aside, Matilda watched helplessly as Wentworth was surrounded by a group of women. She couldn't even squeeze through.
She was starting to regret this.
She shouldn't have brought him. This kind of devastatingly handsome man was too rare.
She also felt a bit angry.
Was Wentworth here to attract admirers?
Just then, Wentworth politely parted the women surrounding him and walked to Matilda's side, placing her hand in the crook of his arm.
Most of the female doctors tactfully backed off—the handsome man was appealing, but he was taken. Approaching him further would be rude, so they had to restrain themselves.
However, Adalyn brazenly walked over.
"Mr. Gonzaga, you probably don't know much about our hospital yet, right? Would you like me to give you a tour?"
Wentworth said coolly, "What's there to tour in a hospital?"
Adalyn smiled. "Well, this is Harmony Health Center after all. We're a large hospital integrating prevention, rehabilitation, and teaching. Under my father's leadership, we currently have over a thousand medical staff and more than ninety senior physicians..."
Wentworth didn't let her finish, instead turning to Matilda. "Matty, you haven't eaten yet, have you? Let me get you something."
Matilda nodded.
Adalyn paused. Wentworth was completely ignoring her. What should she do?
She had an idea!
Wentworth was the only person tonight wearing a suit besides a few administrators. If she changed into an evening gown, wouldn't she match perfectly with Wentworth? Then who wouldn't think they were a couple?
She had a dress in her car, so she hurried to change and quickly fixed her hair.
When Adalyn reappeared, she also drew quite a few stares.
She wore a pink low-cut gown that exposed large expanses of her shoulders. Her waist was slender, and though her hips weren't particularly full, the mermaid-style dress created a nice overall effect.
Some female doctors immediately understood her intentions and began whispering.
"Adalyn actually went to change into an evening gown halfway through—she's obviously trying to seduce Dr. Spencer's boyfriend, right?"
"Why does she always go after Dr. Spencer's boyfriends?"
"I hope he can resist this time. Dr. Spencer can't get hurt again."
---
Adalyn spotted Wentworth at the food station getting plates and sashayed over, purring, "Mr. Gonzaga."
Wentworth turned around, saw Adalyn, and his eyes showed clear disdain.
This Adalyn had schemed against Matilda last time, and he hadn't even settled that score with her. Now she was trying to seduce him?
He wanted to leave immediately but felt that walking away would be letting her off too easy, so he stopped and asked, "What is it?"
"Mr. Gonzaga, you're finally willing to listen to me speak. How rare. I was wondering—could I ask you to see a movie? Or maybe we could start by adding each other on Facebook?"
Wentworth said, "But I'm not interested in you."
Adalyn smiled. "A woman's appeal needs to be discovered gradually. You don't even know me—how can you say you're not interested?"
Wentworth said coldly, "You're not as pretty as her, your figure isn't as good as hers. In short, you're ten thousand times worse than her. Someone like you only deserves that Reuben. Stop pestering me, or I won't be polite."
---
Matilda was eating and chatting with nearby doctors when a female doctor reminded her, "Dr. Spencer, it looks like your boyfriend is talking with Adalyn."
Wentworth had been getting food for her all evening—this was already his third trip.
Matilda quickly looked over and indeed saw Wentworth and Adalyn in conversation.
Wentworth had his back to her, so she couldn't see his expression, but Adalyn kept smiling, posing flirtatiously with expressions full of suggestion.
Her heart suddenly sank.
