Chapter 160 Your Man's Mission Is Very Dangerous
The consultation results differed from what the military hospital had found. Because Wentworth had fallen from such a height and the explosion had been so deafening, his eardrums were also damaged. He couldn't hear anything for now.
Amelia broke down crying again.
"After this, I'm not letting him go back to the military no matter what. He has to retire. I don't care what he does when he comes home, but he's staying put. If he doesn't fully recover, I'll take care of him for the rest of his life. It's not like I can't afford it."
Juliana tried to comfort her. "Mom, Wentworth's a good person. He'll be fine. Please don't worry so much."
Amelia grabbed Juliana's hand. "Thank goodness you're here with me. At least I have someone to talk to. If it were Matilda, we'd have nothing to say to each other."
"Right now, the most important thing is taking good care of Wentworth," Juliana said.
In Majestic City, they started Wentworth on all the most advanced medications. He stayed conscious for longer periods now.
When he woke, his eyes were bandaged, his ears couldn't hear, his legs had no feeling. It was like floating alone in an endless void. But there was a soft, delicate hand holding his, giving him direction.
He knew he'd been injured and was receiving treatment.
"Matty, I promise I'll fight to stay alive."
...
Far away in Phoenix City, Matilda kept jolting awake in the middle of the night. She'd have sudden nightmares and sit up in bed. She kept dreaming that Wentworth was hurt.
She couldn't shake the bad feeling.
She called Charles. "Charles, have you heard from Wentworth lately?"
Charles replied, "No, why? Are you worried about him? He goes on missions all the time. Sometimes for months. I've gone months without hearing from him before."
Afraid of overthinking or having Charles call her dramatic, Matilda quickly said, "Oh, it's nothing. Just some things about the villa. I can't decide on a few details and wanted to ask him."
"If you can't decide, I can send Kai over to help you out," Charles offered.
"No need. It's mainly about the design style. Never mind, I'll just talk to the designer."
Charles didn't suspect anything. He was swamped—some issues had come up in the overseas market that he needed to handle urgently. "Alright, but if you need anything, definitely call me."
"Will do. Thanks."
...
Matilda had rarely had close friends before, but now Carol was here and Zoey kept reaching out. She finally had friends—the kind you could relax around, no games, no worries.
Carol would invite Matilda and Zoey over for meals. She was an amazing cook and made delicious noodles. But eating Carol's noodles only made Matilda miss Wentworth more.
The familiar taste reminded her of eating with Wentworth at the border. The weather there had been cold and dry, but having him around had made her feel warm.
"Matty, why have you seemed so out of it lately?" Carol asked.
Carol used to call her 'Dr. Spencer,' but after getting together with Ethan, she'd started calling her Matty like he did.
"I don't know. My chest has just felt heavy lately," Matilda said.
"You're not pregnant, are you?" Carol asked.
"Impossible. My period just ended."
"Could you be sick?"
Zoey laughed from the side. "Matilda misses him. She just won't admit it."
Carol studied Matilda carefully and nodded. "That does sound about right."
"You two, stop teasing me," Matilda said.
"But if you're not feeling well, why not see a doctor?" Carol asked.
"I am a doctor. I know my own body."
"Bottom line—you miss Wentworth," Carol said.
She continued, "Can you not reach Wentworth? Want me to call Danny and ask? Maybe he knows what's going on with Wentworth. Might ease your lovesickness a bit."
"You're still in touch with Danny?" Matilda asked. "Well... go ahead and try."
Carol smiled and pulled out her phone. As she dialed, she said, "After Wentworth got transferred, Danny was reassigned not long after. Danny came to say goodbye and said we should stay in touch, but I've never actually called his number."
Soon the call connected. Danny picked up.
Danny seemed surprised and excited that Carol was calling. "Carol! Are you still at the border? How are Rick and the others?"
"They're good. Though Rick says he's planning to retire. I'm in Phoenix City now. Guess who I ran into? Dr. Spencer! And she wants to ask about your captain's situation."
"The captain?" Danny said. "He's on a mission. Not back yet."
"You're not with him?"
"Some missions I can go on, some I can't. I'm not skilled enough."
"Always missions, missions. How long is this one supposed to last?" Carol asked.
"The captain's missions are classified. Even if I knew, I couldn't tell you. But I don't know anyway."
"Alright then... if you're ever in Phoenix City, come visit. I'll treat you to a meal." Carol hung up.
She looked at Matilda and shrugged. "Danny doesn't know either. Seems like your man is on a really dangerous mission."
"I've heard that couples who really love each other have a spiritual connection. Wentworth might be on a dangerous mission right now, which is why Matilda's been so uneasy," Zoey said.
"That makes sense." Carol put a hand on Matilda's shoulder. "Don't worry. He'll be fine!"
...
At the Majestic City hospital, Wentworth stayed conscious a bit longer now.
His feet couldn't move, his ears couldn't hear, his eyes couldn't see, but he could feel someone carefully washing his body. More than one person.
He gripped one person's hand—she wore a ring with a green gemstone. That was his mother, Amelia.
So the other person had to be Matty.
He relaxed and accepted her care. Like an infant, he let her massage his body. He thought her touch was heavier than usual, sometimes painful, but figured his injuries made everything feel different.
He lay still, accepting her ministrations.
He felt himself gradually improving. First his toes could move, then his legs could lift to a forty-five-degree angle. His hands could lift too. He wanted to touch Matilda's face.
But she seemed to dodge away.
There were probably other people in the room. His mother didn't like them being too affectionate in front of others, so that's why she pulled back, right?
Having her here caring for him alongside his mother—she must be enduring plenty of harsh words, he thought.
The thought made him even more grateful to her.
