Chapter 49 Fight Back

Chapter 49 Fight Back
Brooke walked in with confidence. Her stride was so steady, as if she already knew exactly what she had to do. Her smile spoke volumes.

“I’m Mr. Thompson’s secretary, so I know a lot about his personal affairs. This is proof of Mrs. Thompson’s affair with that gigolo. They’re even living together.” Brooke spoke with emphasis, scattering the photos across the floor.

Harper bit her lower lip. Her knuckles turned white as she dug her nails into her skin.

She was completely frozen in place.

The photos of her with Sean looked so intimate. Her coworkers immediately picked up the photos.

“I never expected it, but it turns out the rumors were true.”

“He is handsome, but he still can’t compare to Mr. Thompson. He’s just a gigolo.”

“I’m not surprised. A prostitute is a perfect match for a gigolo.”

All sorts of nasty comments began to fill the room. The room was soon filled with noise.

Harper had no idea where Brooke had gotten the photos. She didn’t know how long she’d been spied on for Brooke to have gotten photos of her in front of Sean’s apartment. Compared to Logan’s luxurious mansion, that apartment was clearly worthless.

“Why are you silent? Feeling guilty? Or ashamed that your affair has finally been exposed?” Brooke asked in a confrontational tone.

Harper stared at the woman with a probing gaze. She had met Brooke a few times, but she didn’t know what the woman thought of her. She didn’t know what her true character was like.

If Brooke had come here to cause a scene, it might have something to do with Logan. Why couldn’t Logan just let him live in peace? They were getting divorced—why couldn’t Logan just set him free?

“Did Logan ask you to spread these false rumors?” Harper glared at her.

Brooke laughed sarcastically. “False rumors, you say? All these photos were taken right when you were spending time with that lover of yours. You’ve truly trampled on Mr. Thompson’s pride because your lover is a gigolo.” She spoke with emphasis.
Smack!

A hard slap landed squarely on Brooke’s cheek. Everyone was shocked, including Brooke. The room, which had been filled with noise, suddenly fell completely silent. Only the sound of heavy breathing could be heard.

“Stop calling him a gigolo. He’s my cousin—do I need to pull records from the civil registry to prove our family connection? I moved into his apartment with my family because I divorced your boss. Your boss is the one who’s made my life difficult. Not only did he tarnish my reputation, he’s even made my life miserable. You’re his secretary; of course you’ll do whatever he asks. Just because you say I’m having an affair, does that prove I’m having an affair?” Harper finally let out what she’d been holding back all this time.

Up until now, Harper had always been patient with what was happening. But this time, she could no longer be patient. Because they were insulting Sean. Sean had been so kind to her; he even treated her like his own little sister. In all the decades she’d lived in this world, this was the first time she’d felt what it was like to have a brother full of love and tenderness. She would remain silent when she herself was insulted. But this time, she would fight back if it involved her family.

“What’s going on? Why has it come to this?”

“Is what he said true?”

“It turns out the lives of the wealthy are full of intrigue.”

“You said he’s your cousin, so he’s your cousin? I never knew you were close with your cousin.” Brooke continued to argue.

“Tell me, what does Logan want? He wants me to leave without taking anything; I’ve already left his house with nothing. As for the money I owe him, I’ll pay it back in installments when I have the money. My life is really hard right now. Marrying your boss was the worst mistake of my life. If I’d known his intentions from the start, I would never have accepted his proposal. Father and son are cut from the same cloth. Bastards who just want to ruin my life." Harper spoke with great conviction.

“I’m starting to suspect that what happened to the Salim Group was also your boss’s doing.” Harper said with suppressed anger.

“What does she mean by that? What has Mr. Thompson done?”

“What happened to the Salim Group?”

“I heard the Salim Group got caught up in a major scandal; apparently, there’s a secret behind it.”

“It turns out Mr. Thompson isn’t as good as we thought.”

“Has the attitude Mr. Thompson has shown all this time been just a facade?”

“Maybe what Harper said is true. The Salim family is one of the wealthiest families in Nara City. She even had to move from a luxurious mansion to a cheap apartment—that means she’s really been suffering since getting married.”

Some people started taking Harper’s side after she defended herself.

“Don’t listen to what she says. She’s just making up stories to win sympathy. You know what Mr. Thompson’s reputation has been like all this time, don’t you?” Brooke tried to justify herself.

“A good reputation could just be a facade for the public. We don’t know how many secrets a wealthy family hides.”

“She’s the one married to Mr. Thompson; she should know better. You’re just a secretary; of course you’ll defend your boss.”

They began to turn on Brooke.
Brooke looked extremely annoyed. Her face flushed red, her eyes sharp.

“It’s possible Mr. Thompson was so angry with her that he wanted to divorce her because of her affair. You outsiders don’t know anything.” Brooke started looking for another excuse.

“Tell me, which man was my lover? All this time, the only men around me have been Logan and Ethan. After breaking up with them, I only have my brother Sean. If you keep accusing me of cheating with my cousin, isn’t your accusation completely baseless?” Harper said firmly. There wasn’t a shred of doubt in her tone or the look in her eyes.

“That… that… I just haven’t found the proof yet. Everyone knows you’re Mr. Thompson’s wife, so of course you’d be having an affair on the sly.” Brooke scrambled for another excuse.

Harper gave a faint smile.

“Your answer proves that you’re just making up stories about my affair. There’s one thing you all need to know. I’m the one who filed for divorce, not Logan. Logically speaking, if I were actually having an affair, wouldn’t Logan be the one divorcing me? Not the other way around.” Harper spoke with confidence.

Everyone nodded at Harper’s response. Her words made perfect sense.

“Security! Get this woman out of here! If she comes back, don’t ever let her in to cause a scene again.” The manager said firmly.

‘Damn it! Just you wait! I’ll make you pay for humiliating me today!’ Brooke screamed inside her head
