Chapter 57 Shattered Familiarity
Selena woke to a soft, eerie silence, the kind that clung to her skin like a cold breeze. A year had passed since she last set foot on Earth, yet nothing in her room had changed or maybe everything had, and she was the one who had changed. Her body felt heavier, her mind sharper, and a restless ache throbbed in her chest.
She swung her legs over the side of the bed, her bare feet brushing the cold floor. Hell had changed her. Every corner, every shadow in this place whispered truths she had never known before. But there was only one thing she wanted right now: to see Michael, to feel him near again, and to see Lilith, her best friend the one person who had always known her without needing words.
Selena knew the only way to see Lilith was to return to the office. Lilith had been working at Lucifer’s company before she vanished, and Selena couldn’t wait to cross paths with her again.
She stood and smoothed her hair, running her fingers over the worn fabric of her shirt, taking a deep breath as she made her way toward Lucifer’s room. Every step was measured, every thought rehearsed. She had to convince him to let her back into the company. There were so many things she wanted to say, but she knew the words would matter only if her resolve showed.
When she reached Lucifer’s door, her chest tightened. Her hand hovered over the handle. She inhaled sharply and pushed the door open.
The room was empty.
“Looking for someone?” a voice cut through the silence.
Selena spun around. Lucifer was there, almost materializing from the shadows, his presence heavy, magnetic. The faintest smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, and his eyes glinted with amusement, sharp and unyielding. Her stomach twisted, and a cold shiver crawled up her spine, leaving her breath shallow.
“Still scared of me?” His voice cut through the quiet, smooth but edged with something dangerous.
Selena’s throat tightened. The words she had practiced, rehearsed in every mirror and in the silence of her room, dissolved into nothing. Her lips parted, then closed again, useless. She looked away, focusing on a spot on the floor, trying not to let him see the pulse of fear or something more racing through her.
Lucifer sank into the sofa with casual grace, yet there was a predator’s ease to him, a confidence that made the air itself feel charged. He leaned back, elbows resting on the arms of the sofa, eyes locked on her. “What brings you here?” he asked, calm, casual but Selena felt it like a weight pressing down on her chest.
Her fingers pinched the back of her hand, nails digging into her skin. Her voice trembled as she whispered, almost under her breath, “Can I… go back to work?”
He raised a brow, the smirk never leaving his face, the amusement in his gaze like a flame teasing dry tinder. “Are you really that eager to return?”
Her cheeks flamed hot, and her hands quivered, betraying the steadiness she wanted. She swallowed, trying to push down the nervous flutter in her chest, the excitement mingling with fear. “Yes,” she said, her voice sharper than she felt inside, though it still quivered around the edges.
Lucifer leaned back further, arms draped lazily, yet every inch of him radiated control. “When do you want to start?” he asked, deceptively casual, but Selena felt the unspoken challenge in his tone.
“Today,” she blurted before she could stop herself. Her hands clutched at the edges of her sleeves, twisting the fabric. “Please… can I start today?” Her words hung in the air, raw, almost pleading.
For a heartbeat, he said nothing. Then, the corners of his mouth curved in the faintest, most knowing smile, a shift so subtle it made her stomach lurch. “Yes. You may,” he said.
Relief, sharp and sudden, coursed through her. “Thank you!” she exclaimed, almost tripping over her own feet as she spun toward the door. Her heart hammered in her chest, every step echoing her excitement and nerves.
“You can come out now,” Lucifer called after her, his voice smooth, casual, almost teasing.
Morgana appeared beside him, quiet, curious. “Master… do you know why she’s in such a rush to work?”
Lucifer leaned back, hands clasped behind his head, the picture of lazy control. “Yes, I do.”
“Don’t you think we should warn her… about everything?” Morgana’s voice wavered, concern etched in every line of her face.
Lucifer’s smirk deepened, shadows playing across his sharp features. “Let her find out herself,” he said, slow, deliberate. “She’ll understand soon enough.”
And he knew it was true. Selena would uncover the truth in her own way, in her own time. No need to shield her. The revelation would come, and it would sting. Lilith… she would not recognize her anymore.
The office hit Selena like a splash of cold water. The smell of coffee, the hum of printers, the low chatter of coworkers all familiar, yet somehow distant. Her eyes were drawn instantly, irrevocably, to one person: Lilith.
Lilith moved with purpose, heels clicking softly against the floor, her back straight, hair tied neatly, expression unreadable. Every instinct in Selena’s body screamed to run to her, to bridge the year of absence with a single embrace.
Before she could stop herself, Selena was rushing, arms outstretched, heartbeat hammering in her ears. She clutched Lilith tight, pressing her face to the other’s shoulder. “I missed you,” she whispered, the words trembling with longing and relief.
Lilith froze like a deer caught in headlights. Her hands dropped awkwardly to her sides, fingers stiff, body rigid. “I… I’m sorry. Do I know you?”
Selena stumbled back a step, chest tightening, eyes wide. Confusion and disbelief collided with a raw, jagged ache. Her best friend her anchor, the one person she thought would recognize her heart without words stood there, distant, a stranger.
Selena’s chest tightened, and the world tilted. She wanted to scream, to shake Lilith until recognition came, but all she could do was stand frozen, the warmth of hope draining from her like ice water.
