Chapter 49 When the Devil Returns
Lucifer stood at the edge of the dark tower, his crimson eyes fixed on the glowing doorway below. Through that shimmering frame, he watched Selena laughing inside the illusion of Paris he had created just for her. The golden sunlight glowed softly against her skin as she sat in a café, talking animatedly to a figment he had shaped from her own memories. Even in the false world, she looked heartbreakingly real too human for his cold, eternal heart.
“How has she been?” he asked, his voice low and sharp as steel.
Morgana, cloaked in silver mist, appeared beside him. Her tone trembled slightly. “She’s been here since you gave her the door. I told her it could take her anywhere she wished. She chose Paris… and she hasn’t left since.”
Lucifer’s gaze never wavered. “Did she ask for me?”
Morgana hesitated, her lips parting before she bowed her head. “Once. Before she opened the door. She wanted to know if you’d return. I told her you would.”
A flicker of emotion crossed Lucifer’s face gone as quickly as it came. Without another word, he vanished, leaving behind the scent of smoke and brimstone.
The bell above the café door chimed as he appeared before Selena his face different now, disguised beneath human features.
“Hello, miss,” he greeted with a faint smile.
Selena glanced up from her cup of coffee. Her eyes soft and curious met his. “Hi.”
“How’s your stay in Paris?” he asked, sliding into the seat across from her.
“It’s beautiful,” she said, her lips curving slightly. “But I’m waiting for someone.”
“Oh?” he leaned forward, pretending curiosity. “Who might that be?”
She looked down at her cup, tracing the rim with her finger. “Lucifer,” she whispered. “I miss him.”
The name hit him like a storm. He forced his expression to remain calm, even as his heart if he could still call it that tightened painfully in his chest.
“And how long have you been waiting for him?” he asked softly.
She smiled, fragile but full of hope. “Since the day I learned he wasn’t in hell anymore. I don’t know when he’ll come back… but I’ll wait. I know he will.”
Something inside him broke.
With a wave of his hand, the illusion of Paris melted away like smoke in the wind. The café, the people, the city all vanished leaving only the garden where it had all begun.
Selena froze. Her eyes widened as she realized who stood before her now his dark wings faintly visible, his true power radiating like heat.
“Lucifer…” she breathed, her voice trembling.
He said nothing. The words between them were too heavy, too raw.
Selena took a shaky step back. “Why would you do that? Why let me believe”
Before she could finish, his magic pulled her close. His hand found the back of her neck, and his lips met hers. The world fell away as fire and shadow consumed them both. His kiss was deep, unrelenting a promise, a curse, and everything in between. Her heart beat wildly against his chest as their tongues tangled, every breath stolen, every wall broken.
Far from the garden, deep within the royal chambers of the underworld, a scream sliced through the silence like shattered glass.
King Luca froze. The sound wasn’t just loud it was familiar. It was hers.
He spun around, his cloak flaring behind him, and the sight before him made his veins turn to ice.
Queen Seraphine stood by the mirror, her body trembling. Blood slipped from the corner of her mouth, trailing down to her pale fingers. Her eyes usually sharp as moonlight now glowed faintly, wide with something he’d never seen in her before. Fear.
“Seraphine,” he breathed, rushing toward her. The scent of blood thickened the air, metallic and warm. “What’s happening?”
She tried to speak, her chest rising in uneven gasps. “He’s found him,” she whispered, voice shaking. “Lucifer has destroyed my spy in hell. I felt it the bond… snapped like glass.”
Her last word broke, and so did Luca’s composure. He staggered back, his heartbeat thundering in his ears. Every story he’d ever heard about Lucifer clawed its way into his mind each one ending in fire and ruin.
He dragged a hand through his hair, pacing, his boots echoing across the cold marble floor. “We must appease him,” he muttered, the words tasting like ash. “If he comes to our realm, he’ll burn us alive.”
Seraphine lifted her gaze, fury flickering beneath her pain. “Appease him?” Her voice cut through the air, sharp and trembling. “And what do you plan to offer?”
Her bloodstained hand curled into a fist. “You know he accepts only a child of royal blood.” Her voice cracked as she spoke their names, each one a prayer and a plea. “Not Ravenna. Not Nyx. Never.”
Her tears gleamed crimson in the flickering torchlight, sliding down her cheeks like falling rubies.
