Chapter 46 The Prophecy Reborn
Flames burst from the ground, spiraling around Lucifer’s boots. The fire licked at his legs but left no burn only the reflection of rage shimmering across his skin. His eyes blazed brighter than the pits of Hell itself.
“No one,” he hissed, each word crackling like embers, “touches her.”
Across the burning ground, Hades tilted his head, curiosity glinting in his dark eyes. He had seen Lucifer angry before but never like this. This was the kind of fury that could split realms.
“Tell me, Lucifer,” Hades said slowly, a hint of a smirk playing at his lips. “What are you going to do?” His voice carried that familiar blend of mockery and intrigue, like a man who already knew he was poking at a sleeping beast.
Lucifer turned toward him, his movements slow and deliberate. The glow from the infernal flames carved sharp lines across his face, his eyes glinting like shards of glass ready to cut through lies. “And why would I tell you, Hades?”
Hades stepped forward, his boots scraping over scorched stone. The heat shimmered between them, distorting his smirk. “Because,” he said, his tone smooth and practiced, “I want to help you, Master.”
A low, cold laugh spilled from Lucifer’s lips, echoing through the vast, ruined chamber. It wasn’t amusement it was the kind of sound that made the flames flicker back in fear. “Help me?” he repeated softly, tilting his head. The air around him seemed to darken, heavy with the scent of sulfur and old blood. “No, you don’t want to help. You want to feast on death again. You crave it.”
He stepped closer, and the shadows bent toward him, like living things desperate for his touch. His voice dropped, low and calm, the calm of a predator before a kill. “And I’ll give you what you want soon enough. Very soon, Hades, you’ll feast on death… just as you always do.”
Each word rolled like thunder beneath his breath.
Lucifer’s next step made the stone tremble. The firelight followed him as if drawn to his fury. “Now,” he said, voice cold as iron, “tell me what I want to know.”
The grin that lingered on Hades’ face wavered. For the briefest moment, he froze his usual arrogance slipping like a mask in the heat. The silence between them stretched thin, brittle. Then, with a shallow breath, he said quietly, “Her mother is still alive, Lucifer.”
The flames roared higher, responding to the shift in Lucifer’s energy. His eyes narrowed, molten gold hardening into something far more dangerous. The air grew thick, humming with restrained power. He had suspected this before, long ago when he’d searched the depths of Hell and found no trace of her soul. But hearing it now from Hades’ lips made the ground seem to pulse beneath his feet.
“Where is she?” The words came out low, tight, and edged like a blade.
Hades spread his hands, his tone almost mocking. “How could I know? I haven’t left my kingdom for centuries.”
Something in Lucifer snapped.
The ground beneath them cracked with a violent tremor as his power surged outward. Hades’ smirk vanished, replaced by shock as he was ripped from the ground. Invisible force coiled around his throat, lifting him high into the air. His robes flared around him, his fingers clawing at nothing.
Lucifer’s wings unfurled behind him vast and black as storm clouds. “What game are you playing with me this time?” His voice thundered through the cavern, echoing off the walls like the voice of judgment itself. “You know where she is. Speak now!”
Hades choked, his face paling as his crown tilted askew. “Fine fine! I’ll speak!” he rasped.
Lucifer released him, and Hades crashed to the floor. The impact sent cracks spidering across the stone. He coughed, dragging in a breath that sounded more like a hiss, and wiped a smear of ash from his mouth. Then, slowly, he looked up his grin returning, faint but full of dark satisfaction.
“You know who I am, Lucifer,” he croaked. “The king of the dead. All souls pass through me. My eyes see beyond what the living. or the damned can see.”
He rose, spine straightening, dignity returning with every word. “If she were dead, she would’ve crossed my path. Her soul would’ve gone to you. But she hasn’t.” He paused, letting the silence sink like a blade between them. “She’s alive.”
Lucifer’s eyes blazed. The firelight reflected in them until they looked like twin suns burning through shadow. “Alive?” he demanded, his voice low but trembling with restrained fury. “Where?”
“In the vampire realm,” Hades said, and his tone shifted dark, reverent, almost admiring. “King Luca’s palace. He hides her deep beneath it so deep that no vampire, no creature, would dare to look for her there.”
Lucifer’s jaw clenched. “But I saw it in the vision,” he said, the words tasting of disbelief and anger. “Luca killed her. I saw him tear her throat.”
Hades chuckled a low, rasping sound that slithered across the room. “He did,” he said. “But she didn’t die.”
Lucifer’s fire burned hotter, brighter, until every shadow fled. “You’re saying she can’t die?”
Hades’ eyes glowed like dying embers, his smile cruel. “She can’t,” he murmured. “You’ve forgotten, haven’t you? She once visited Crimson Eden the first mortal ever to walk through those gates. She changed everything that day. She started a new prophecy.”
He stepped closer, the red glow reflecting off his pale skin. “And now, she is the prophecy, Lucifer.” His smile deepened, slow and knowing. “She’s the reason everything is falling apart.”
For a heartbeat, Lucifer’s fire dimmed, his expression unreadable like a storm gathering strength before it breaks. Then the flames erupted once more, fierce and unrestrained, swirling around him in a crown of fury. The air itself seemed to tremble in submission.
