Chapter 181 The Reunion
"My mind is set, Morgana. Now, go. Finish what I started." Lucifer didn't turn away from the glass. He remained a silhouette against the jagged skyline of Hell, his hands clasped tightly behind his back.
Morgana lingered in the doorway, her gaze fixed on the slump of his shoulders the only sign of the grief he was refusing to voice. She knew the iron rule of his word; he was a king who would sooner burn than retract a command. "Your wish is my command, Master," she whispered. She bowed her head, the silk of her robes hissing against the floor as she retreated, leaving him alone in a room that suddenly felt far too large.
SIX YEARS LATER
"Aurelion! Slow down, the grass is slick!" Selena’s voice rang out across the sun-drenched park, a mix of panic and adoration.
The boy didn't listen. He sprinted with a terrifying, natural speed, his dark curls bouncing as he wove between the oak trees.
He stopped abruptly at the edge of a gravel path, pointing a sticky finger at a small ice cream cart shaded by a striped umbrella.
"Mummy, please! The cold chocolate one!"
Selena caught up to him, breathless, her cheeks flushed with the warmth of a Saturday afternoon. She reached into her pocket, fumbling for her wallet, but a slender hand clad in a black lace glove reached the counter first.
"Put it on my account," a woman’s voice silkily interrupted.
Selena looked up, startled. The woman stood tall, draped in a high-necked black gown that seemed to absorb the sunlight rather than reflect it. A heavy, floral scent like lilies at a funeral drifted from her.
"Oh, you don't have to do that," Selena said, offering a bright, grateful smile. "Thank you so much."
"It’s no trouble at all," the woman replied. Her eyes were dark and sharp, tracing the lines of Aurelion’s face with a strange, knowing hunger.
"Your son... he is quite handsome. He has a look of ancient strength about him."
The woman turned to glide away, her movements fluid and ghost-like.
"Wait!" Selena called out, her brow furrowed with a sudden, inexplicable itch in the back of her mind. "Do I know you? What is your name?"
The woman paused, half-turning so the shadows of the trees masked her features.
"Call me Morgana," she said. The name felt like a cold stone dropping into a deep well. Then, she stepped behind a thicket of elms and simply wasn't there anymore.
"Mummy? Do you know the dark lady?" Aurelion asked, his face already smeared with melting chocolate.
"I... I’m not sure, baby. She just feels like a dream I can't quite remember."
Before she could dwell on it, a shout went up from the path. A cyclist, head down and pedaling furiously, veered off the track, heading straight for the boy. Selena’s heart lunged into her throat. "Aurelion! Look out!"
She reached for him, but she was too far. Just as the metal frame was about to collide with the child, a man stepped out from behind a stone pillar. He moved with a blurred, predatory grace, catching the boy by the waist and hoisting him effortlessly into the air as the bike whizzed past.
He set Aurelion down gently, his large hands lingering on the boy's shoulders for a fraction of a second too long. "Steady there, little one," the man said, his voice a deep, resonant rumble that made the air in Selena's lungs vanish. "Don't give your mother a fright."
"Thank you! Oh, thank you!" Selena rushed over, pulling Aurelion into her side, her hands shaking as she checked him for scratches.
"He’s so stubborn, he never looks where he’s going," she rambled, her eyes finally lifting to meet the stranger's.
The man stood tall, dressed in a sharp, dark suit that looked out of place in a park, yet he wore it like a second skin. His eyes were the color of a storm about to break.
"Perhaps he took that from his father," the man suggested, a faint, melancholic tug at the corner of his mouth. "Stubbornness can be a powerful inheritance."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell between them. The sounds of the park the barking dogs, the distant laughter, the wind in the leaves all faded into a dull hum. Selena found herself staring at him, her vision blurring.
Without her permission, hot tears began to track down her cheeks.
The man stepped closer, his presence overwhelming and familiar. He raised a hand, his thumb catching a tear before it could fall.
The touch sent a jolt of electricity through her, a phantom memory of fire and velvet. "I’m sorry," he whispered. "Did I say something to hurt you?"
"No," Selena breathed, her voice a mere ghost of a sound. "No, I don't know why I'm crying."
He held her gaze for a moment longer, his expression a mix of agony and adoration. "I should go then, beauty. I am glad to see you are... happy."
He turned, his stride long and purposeful, heading toward the park gates. The world felt like it was tilting on its axis. Fragments of a life she didn't own began to flicker behind her eyes a throne of bone, the smell of sulfur, a war in the clouds, and a pair of wings that blotted out the sun.
"Hello, Lucifer," she called out.
The man froze. He went rigid, his shoulders locking. He spun around, and the mask of the stoic stranger shattered. He didn't walk; he ran, covering the distance in an instant. He pulled her into him, his arms a vice, and crashed his lips against hers.
It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was a collision of years, of lost memories, and of a love that had survived the erasure of the mind itself. Their tongues danced in a desperate, frantic rhythm as the dam finally broke.
When they pulled apart just enough to breathe, Selena gripped his lapels, her face wet with a fresh torrent of tears. "I love you, Lucifer," she sobbed, the words finally finding their way home. "I will always love you."
