Chapter 128 Webs of Deceit
“I am Damian,” he announced, his voice steady, yet threaded with an intensity that hinted at the peril he carried. “I speak for the vampire realm.”
Lucifer’s gaze sharpened, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He knew Luca prideful, meticulous, never one to miss a meeting. And yet here he was, sending a representative instead of appearing himself. Damian. A spy, masquerading as an emissary.
Lucifer leaned back in his throne, letting the moment stretch, savoring the tension that hung thick in the air. The room seemed to pulse with it the faint shuffle of feet, the rustle of robes, the low murmur of whispered alliances. Damian’s polished boots clicked against the marble floor as he moved toward the round table, each step deliberate, measured.
“Master,” the werewolf king’s voice boomed, deep and commanding, reverberating against the high, dark arches, “why not strike the angels in the open, in the middle of the field at midnight? Our forces will be at their strongest. We will crush them where they least expect it.”
A wave of nods passed through the assembly. Eyes gleamed in the dim light, claws flexed, wings twitched. The air was heavy, almost electric, charged with anticipation the kind that precedes chaos.
Lucifer’s eyes roamed over them, calm but piercing. He could feel the undercurrent of loyalty and fear, the subtle power struggles that always simmered beneath the surface. “Very well,” he said, his voice low, deliberate, slicing through the murmurs like a sharpened blade. The words carried authority, finality.
The meeting began to disperse. One by one, the rulers of darkness slithered and strode toward the exit, their robes whispering over stone floors, leaving faint traces of shadows that clung to the corners. And yet, Morgana lingered. She had watched him the entire time, had traced his every glance and twitch, waiting for a moment to speak. Now, with the others gone, she stepped forward, her heartbeat quickening as she dared to break the silence.
“Master… why didn’t you say anything during the meeting?” Morgana asked. Her brow creased as she searched his face, as if the silence itself had unsettled her.
Lucifer did not answer. He rose from the throne in one smooth motion, the heavy folds of his robes whispering as they followed. With a flick of his wrist, the air split open. Fire spilled outward, alive and breathing, forming a portal that roared with heat. The scent of ash and scorched stone filled the chamber.
Without looking back, Lucifer stepped through.
Morgana hesitated only a heartbeat before following. Her heels rang sharply against the stone as the world shifted around them. On the other side, a river of molten fire stretched endlessly, its surface churning, hissing, lighting their path in violent shades of gold and crimson.
They walked in silence.
Lucifer finally glanced at her, his expression carved from shadow. “Tell me, Morgana,” he said, his voice calm, almost idle, “why do you think Luca didn’t come?”
She slowed, closing the space between them. “Perhaps…” Her words wavered. “Perhaps he was busy.”
A soft laugh escaped Lucifer quiet, amused, dangerous. “Busy?” He shook his head. “Luca does not get busy. He has never missed a meeting. Not once.” His gaze stayed fixed ahead, as though recalling a long memory. “He would crawl through fire to sit at that table.”
Morgana swallowed. Her voice dropped. “Then… could it be because of his daughter?” She hesitated before finishing, “The one you killed.”
Lucifer stopped walking.
The fire reflected in his eyes as he turned to her, his smile slow and razor-sharp. “In three days,” he said, “we move against the angels.” He took a step closer, the heat intensifying between them. “And in those three days, the vampires reach their peak. Wings stronger. Blood hotter. Power swollen beyond restraint.”
He studied her face. “That is when they are most dangerous.”
His voice lowered. “And Luca will betray me.”
The words settled heavily between them.
Morgana’s breath caught. “How… Master?”
Lucifer resumed walking, his pace unhurried. “Because Luca never misses a meeting,” he said again, each word deliberate. “Yet he sent Damian.” His lips curved slightly. “A warrior, not a diplomat. Sent to listen. To measure.”
He glanced at her. “Damian spoke carefully. Too carefully. Asking the right questions, hiding the wrong truths. He believed I wouldn’t notice.”
The fire beside them snapped and hissed as Lucifer’s voice turned cold. “I can taste lies before they are spoken.” His smile returned, darker now. “Luca has forgotten who taught him how to deceive. I am the father of liars.”
He stopped once more. “And now he serves my brother.”
Morgana’s hands curled at her sides. “Then we should wipe out the vampire realm before they act.”
Lucifer turned toward the river of fire, the flames carving sharp shadows across his face. Slowly, he shook his head. “Not yet.”
He stepped closer to the edge, the heat rising, licking at their skin. “There is no pleasure in striking too soon. Timing,” he said softly, “is everything.”
His gaze lingered on the churning fire. “When the moment comes, I will burn them all. But for now…” His smile deepened. “I will watch.”
The river roared.
“Let Luca weave his lies,” Lucifer murmured. “Let him move first.”
Morgana shivered as the darkness around him thickened.
“I will be ready.”
