Chapter 123 Born of Two Realms
Something tugged at Selena, pulling her up from a heavy, dreamless dark slow at first, like a fingertip tracing the edge of her mind.
“You have slept too long… stand up.”
The words drifted through her like a breeze that didn’t belong to this world.
Her eyelashes trembled before she finally forced her eyes open. The forest around her was drenched in pale mist. No wind. No birds. No rustle of leaves. The silence pressed against her eardrums, thick and unnatural, as if the woods themselves were watching her.
Smoke seeped between the trees in twisting ribbons, coiling around her boots, brushing over her skin with a strange familiarity almost like it knew her name.
Selena swallowed, pushing herself upright. Her heartbeat thudded hard, loud enough she feared the forest could hear it.
“Who’s there?” she called out. Her voice wavered, but she straightened her shoulders, refusing to let fear take her posture.
“You don’t need to look around,” the voice breathed right beside her ear, though no warmth followed it. “I am here.”
Selena spun so fast the mist split around her. Nothing. No footsteps. No shadow. Only the smoke, thickening, drifting upward until it swallowed the outlines of the trees like a living thing.
“Show yourself!” she yelled. The sound cracked, sharp enough to shiver through the stillness.
A laugh slithered through the forest low, amused, and cold. It circled her, brushing the back of her neck like an invisible hand.
“Why should I show myself to you, Selena?” the voice mocked. “Daughter of King Luca. Enemy of your father’s father. The child the prophecy whispers about… the one destined to tear apart the vampire realm. The one with Hemilune blood.”
Her pulse slammed against her ribs. The mist drifted closer, suffocating, curling at her waist and shoulders. Every direction looked the same white, shifting, closing in. She felt the smoke pushing against her like it wanted to cage her, swallow her whole.
“What are you talking about?” she shouted back, but the tremor in her voice betrayed her.
Her words sounded brave her body didn’t feel like it.
Though her voice wasn’t as steady as she wanted.
“Hemilune blood,” the voice echoed, vibrating through the trees until their branches shivered as though struck by wind. “Heaven and Hell do not know the full truth. You were never meant to destroy alone. You were meant to save. You belong to both realms… and the fate of the world will bow to your choice.”
A soft thud sounded behind her.
Selena spun instantly, heart jerking upward. Her breath hitched as her eyes darted through the mist nothing. Only the smoke twisting like hands trying to form a body, dissolving each time she blinked.
“You have slept too long,” the voice whispered, now drifting above her, below her, inside her ears. “You’ve forgotten what you carry inside you. Hemilune blood… it is time to wake up.”
“Show yourself!” Selena screamed, the desperation ripping through her throat. “Let me see you!”
The forest paused.
Every curl of smoke froze mid-air, as if the entire realm inhaled at once.
Then, with a slow hiss, the fog peeled open down the center like a curtain being drawn back.
A silhouette stepped out.
Each footstep made the smoke recoil from her, clearing a path. The figure moved with a calm, eerie grace, her outline sharpening with every step. Selena narrowed her eyes, squinting against the blurring mist, trying to capture the face
Her lungs emptied.
It was her.
But not her.
This version of Selena looked carved from shadow her clothes a pure, lightless black that swallowed the faint glow around them. Her hair darker, her skin colder. And her eyes… sharper, deeper, ancient.
She smiled, slow and wicked, like she’d been waiting centuries for this moment.
“I am you, Selena,” she said softly, letting the words curl like smoke. “I am the blood inside you. I am the prophecy they fear. It’s time you let me out.”
Selena stumbled back, her heel catching on a root. She shook her head, refusing to look away for even a heartbeat.
“You’re not me.”
“Why?” the figure asked, stepping forward until the distance felt thinner than breath. “Are you afraid I’m real… or afraid of accepting what you are?”
She leaned in, her lips almost brushing Selena’s ear. Her breath was ice cold enough to sting.
“It’s time for war, Selena,” she whispered. “And it’s time I take charge.”
The earth trembled.
A crack tore beneath Selena’s feet fast, violent splitting the ground wide open. A shockwave ripped up her spine, forcing a scream from her chest as the world yanked itself apart.
Then everything shattered into blinding darkness.
Selena jerked awake with a sharp inhale, the sound tearing from her like she’d been drowning.
Her eyes flew open to darkness heavy, ancient darkness. Lucifer’s chamber materialized around her in slow, unsettling pieces: obsidian walls etched with glowing sigils, their red light crawling across the stone like living veins. Flames cracked softly in the corners, their glow breathing shadows that stretched and twisted along the floor.
Selena’s chest rose and fell in ragged bursts as she pushed herself upright. Sweat clung to her skin. Her fingers trembled against the sheets. For a moment, the air felt too thick to swallow.
Someone was watching her.
Her vision wavered, then snapped back into focus.
Lucifer stood at the foot of the bed, arms folded loosely, a slow, knowing smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. His eyes studied her like she was a weapon being sharpened right in front of him.
Her pulse jumped as the world sharpened again her reflection in his eyes glowing back at her. Her own eyes burned, shifting into a deep, unnatural red that wasn’t hers alone.
“Good,” Lucifer murmured, turning his head just slightly toward Morgana. “She’s awake.”
Selena swallowed hard.
The echo of the figure from the dream her other self pressed against her skull like a fresh bruise.
Wake up.
The word pulsed through her mind, electric and cold.
Lucifer stepped closer, the heat from the flames brushing against his silhouette as Morgana’s dark gaze flickered between them.
Then he smiled wider slow, deliberate, hungry for what came next.
“It’s time,” he said. “Prepare to return to Hell.”
